I brought this DVD as I'd previously done beginners yoga and really enjoyed that so I thought I'd give pilates a go.I decided to buy 'Pilates Weight Loss Workout for Dummies' as it was aimed at beginners, and it was only £4.97 from amazon. Pilates is great for toning, as it involves strengthening and strecthing muscles particularly in your midsection i.e stomach, hips and bum. This workout is also designed to increase your heatrate so that you burn more calories than with a tradtional pilates workout.
The DVD has two sets of exercises: a 20 minute standing routine and a 15 minute mat routine, which makes it a good length for doing in one go. Although it is aimed at beginners I did think that it moved too quickly in parts. Whilst most of the exercises were explained verbally by the instructor (Tracy Thompson) there were some moves that weren't fully explained and I felt a bit lost in places. However by watching the moves a couple of times I have got a better handle on them. What is good about this DVD is that whilst the instructor is demonstrating the moves there is extra information on how you can simplify the moves or make them more challenging, which can be useful when you are just beginning and when you are progressing.
I did enjoy this workout, however since I've never done pilates I can't really comment on how authentic it. It did raise my heartrate and work my muscles (and left me feeling a bit sore the next day if I'm being honest), so hopefully it will help me tone up. If it's weight loss you are after I don't really think this is the DVD for you, as there aren't any cardiovascular exercises.
Advantages: Makes you more toned and is very relaxing Disadvantages: Doesnt last very long.
...confidence to wera skirts in the summer to show off my brand new figure. I alo felt very relaxed after doing the dvd. The dvd only cost me £5.00 which is a bargain as it is the best and easy pilates fitness dvd you will ever buy. ...

Plot: The makers of the 'Dummy' instructional books and videos have struck again, this time with a beginner's guide to Pilates. The gist of the Pilates workout is to engage what is known as the powerhouse (the stomach and other core muscles of the body) to gain strength and, in the process, shed extra pounds. A specific method of breathing (through the nose only) is also employed during key moments of the movements. The method of building strength that was first developed by German athlete Joseph Pilates has become a close second to yoga in popularity. Pilates originally invented spring tension machines that use straps for the feet and supports for the back. This 'Pilates For Dummies' program provides mat work, or moves that can be executed on the floor. This makes for an easy, at-home introduction to an exercise regime that is said to create the long, lean dancer's body.
