...subject of homosexuality and AIDS, Philadelphia does an excellent job of disbanding many of the myths surrounding both of the subjects. The success has been partly put down to director Jonathan Demme getting Bruce Springsteen to provide the title track for the film, which he felt would attract more people. Whether this is the reason, Springsteen's song "Streets of Philadelphia" really encapsulates the feeling of the film with some very moving lyrics.
Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) is a promising with a glittering career ahead of him t a very prestigious law firm. Suddenly he finds himself sacked from his job for supposedly being incompetent and not having what it takes. He knows that the real reason is because he is a homosexual suffering from AIDS. Aggrieved at the injustice he hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a personal injury lawyer, to help him defend his dignity and his professional reputation. At first Miller is reluctant to take on the case but when he reflects on the racial prejudices he has incurred, he agrees to take it on and in doing so, challenges his own prejudices against AIDS and homosexuality. As he fights for the reputation of miller, he is also fighting against the ignorance and prejudices of society.
Has there ever been another film in the history of movie making to have challenged so many people to confront their own prejudices and ignorance. Dealing with the highly provocative subject of homosexuality and AIDS, Philadelphia does an excellent job of disbanding many of the myths surrounding both of the subjects. Not only does Philadelphia tell a powerful story of injustice, it is also a beautifully shot film, which has many scenes which will tug at your heart strings. It also allowed Tom Hanks to demonstrate that he was more than capable of performing serious roles as he had previously been better known for his comedy roles. There were some critics who suggested that Hanks was not convincing as a homosexual, what did they expect a bloke wearing lipstick, lycra and high heals. Part of the beauty of the film was that it attempted to destroy society's stereotypes of how homosexuals looked and acted. He must have been pretty good as he won an Oscar for his performance. It is quite surprising that with such a challenging subject, Philadelphia managed to attract such big audiences.
The main character of the film is Andrew Beckett, played by Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan), a successful lawyer who is being guided by his bosses at the law firm until they find out he is a Homosexual with AIDS. In the movie we see Beckett's health suffer as the effects of AIDS ravish his body. Too try and make his portrayal as realistic as possible, Hanks lost 26 pounds in weight during the duration of the filming, leaving him painfully thin by the end of it. Interestingly the role of Andrew Beckett was offered to other stars including Michael Keaton and Andy Garcia, fortunately for us Hanks won it. The character of Joe Miller, Beckett's lawyer' is played by Denzel Washington (Remember the Titans). As always with Washington, he provides a first class performance as Miller, a lawyer who for the first time has to deal with his own prejudices and ignorance's. A very good scene is where Andrew Beckett goes into Miller's office and while explaining that he has AIDS starts touching things around the room. You can see the fear on Millers face that he may now get infected. Fortunately we see him visit his doctor who dispels all the myths on how you can become infected. Originally this role was to be given to a comedy actor such as Bill Murray. Fortunately Washington expressed an interest in the role, and the director jumped at the chance of working with him. The supporting cast is littered with such acting greats as Joanne Woodward, Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen and Antonio Banderas. The entire supporting cast put in first class performances, which really do help to make this film a very emotional journey.
Philadelphia is directed by Jonathan Demme who had previously directed the award winning "The Silence of the Lambs". In my opinion he doesn't put a foot wrong with the film and should have at least been honoured with an Oscar nomination (that year's best director Oscar was won by Steven Spielberg for Schindler's List). Demme has handles a very moving story with the respect it deserves. For example when you hear the bosses at the law form telling homosexual jokes, it is done in a way that doesn't make you laugh but actually makes you feel disgusted. What he has also done is to demonstrate that no matter what age, colour, race, religion or sexual orientation you may be, prejudice is as much of an illness as AIDS and cancer. There are so many beautiful scenes in the film which are not only down to the actor's brilliant performances but also the great direction of Demme. Interestingly he shot the film in sequence due to the fact that Hanks was gradually losing weight throughout the filming for his role.
Without spoiling the film for anyone, the sound track to the film is absolutely critical. With a mixture of classical, contemporary and haunting ballads, the soundtrack really does complement the film as it takes you on the emotional journey.

========== Conclusion & Rating ================
Philadelphia ranks as one of my top ten films of all time, not only because of the excellent performances and great sound track, but it deals with a very real subject in a very real manner. It dispels so many myths associated with AIDS and homosexuality that I honestly believe that the film should feature in the curriculum for Social Studies in our schools. For those of you who have never seen Philadelphia, I strongly recommend it to you, but be prepared for a very emotional journey. And to those who have seen this film but do not own a copy, WHY NOT? It is only £5.97 on Amazon which is a very cheap price for such a great film.
Advantages: Wonderful characters, excellent story and direction Disadvantages: Its very emotionally draining.
Where can I start about this film except to say that it was one of the most beautiful yet absolutely tragic stories I have ever heard. Tom Hanks masterfully portrays the character, Andrew Beckett, a homosexual lawyer. A man who, when it is revealed he has Aids, is fired by the successful law firm he works for. They reason given is that he has been incompetant in his work, a reason which everyone knows is simply an excuse to cover the fact that it ... ...the support of his boyfriend, Miguel Alvarez (Antonio Banderas) and his family he sets about finding a lawyer to act on his behalf during a court case regarding his unfair dismissal. Andrew settles upon Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) and visits him at his office. At first Joe is very reluctant to take on the case but eventually realise how worthwhile it is and agrees to represent him. The company does its utmost to bring Andrew down which only gives ...

Advantages: Well made film Disadvantages: Death is never pretty
This film is a must see. A tear-jerker?.. well maybe, but Tom Hanks performance is, as usual, outstanding. He gives a very guttsy and truly believable performance as a man who is fired from his job, because he has Aids, after, his bosses, gave him a feeble excuse of his so called ineptitude in the job. This film takes you through a whole load of emotions , laughter, sadness, fear, and anger are all there to see and feel. This is a truly well made, ...

Advantages: Very good film dealing with the prejudices of how people with Aids or HIV are treated. Disadvantages: Very sad film.
This is a film where Tom Hanks stars as a brilliant lawyer who is gay and has Aids. He does not tell his employers, but when they find out they fire him and make out that he is incompetent at his job.
He subsequently takes them to Court even though they are a powerful law firm. The story covers how Tom seeks the help of another lawyer and eventually they become friends. It goes into the law on how people should not be penalised for their illness.

Advantages: Strong Drama, Good Performances, Great overall package Disadvantages: Nothing
From what I remember, Philadelphia was the first 'serious' film I'd seen in a theatre. Up until that point as a young teen it was all Batman Returns and Naked Gun. I didn't go to see the film because of the subject matter; I went because the word was that it was a great performance by Tom Hanks who at the time was known for light-hearted romps. Needless to say, Hanks performance was excellent, the film drove a strong message home to those uneducated about Aids and after thirteen years it still remains a great film.
Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a young up and coming lawyer. In a male dominated law firm, Andrew keeps his sexuality secret in fear that it might damage his career. Sadly it does as he is fired for supposedly botching a big account. But in fact he was fired for having Aids. With his health deteriorating, Beckett enlists ...

If you were to pick a dream cast for a screwball comedy in the early 40's you would be unlikely to get one better than this. Cary Grant stars as Dexter Haven the divorced husband of Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn), a Philadelphia socialite. When Tracy is due to remarry Dexter aids some reporters (Macauley Connor (James Stewart) and Elizabeth Imbrie (Ruth Hussey)) to attend the wedding to get a scoop for their magazine. Naturally Connor falls for the soon to be bride and seeks to win her affection, along with Dexter who still holds a torch and her fiancé.
This film bubbles with wit and charm throughout and has rightly become a classic in the genre. This is down to an excellent script and marvellous performances from all leads. Stewart won the Academy Award that year but you can't help but feel Hepburn was robbed. This was something ...

effects are impossible to conceal from the partners, led by Jason Robards. They fire him with incompetence as their reason. It is an old-fashioned firm and they fear the effect on their clients. Beckett becomes more ill as the disease wreaks its terrible passage through his system, and even though he knows death is inevitable he resolves to sue his old firm on the grounds that his dismissal was really because of his illness, and therefore unfair.
The closed society of Philadelphia law turns its back on him, and in desperation he goes to a fiercely heterosexual black lawyer whose advert he has seen on tv while sat in a hospital emergancy waiting room played by Denzel Washington "Joe Miller " who makes a point of standing up for the oppressed. He is essentially homophobic but he is also against persecution and after initial reluctance, takes ...
Two men, an AIDS sufferer and a black lawyer, launch an historic struggle against society's ignorance and intolerance towards AIDS. Tom Hanks won an Academy Award for his masterful performance and he is ably supported by Washington and Robbards.

DVD Description
After a solid track record and a much-deserved promotion, Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a handsome, upwardly mobile Philadelphia lawyer, loses his high-paying corporate job when he starts developing full-blown AIDS. Though Andrew's firm attributes his dismissal to his supposedly poor performance, he knows otherwise, and he won't accept the firm's discrimination lying down. Andrew will do whatever is necessary to prosecute. But when nine other lawyers refuse to help him, Andrew reluctantly hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a showy, homophobic, ambulance-chasing lawyer whose first reaction to the news that Andrew has AIDS is to rush to the doctor and have himself checked. Despite Joe's fear and dislike of gays, he and Andrew discover they've got quite a bit in common, and they decide they're going to fight to the finish. The result is an emotionally potent drama that doesn't flinch from exposing the long-term effects of the disease on Beckett and his friends and family. Jonathan Demme directs and Bruce Springstein sings the title song, 'Streets of Philadelphia,' part of an Academy Award-winning score.
