This DVD is stand-up comedy from the man who brought us Phoenix Nights ("Garlic Bread?...It's the future...I've tasted it.") and the John Smith's ads where he tries to send his mum off to an old folks home because a) he wants a games room and b) her moustache is scaring the kids.
Live at the Bolton Albert Halls is Peter Kay at his knicker-wettingly funny best. The DVD opens with a sequence showing Peter trying to get to the venue in question in time for curtain-up. Humour ensues, with the taxi driver (who is a nutter) stopping to pick up two girls who, it turns out, are on their way to see Peter Kay, and are worrying about being late until it dawns on them that the show can't start until their fellow passenger gets there...
From this sequence, we see Peter Kay arriving at the venue, announcing his performance to the audience (in the best compere's voice) and appearing on stage. Here, it cuts to a live performance, filmed at the Bolton Albert Halls (his "home" venue) during his 9-month, 180-night "Mum wants a bungalow tour".
In the audience are various members of the Coronation Street cast, his mum and his nan. The camera frequently cuts to pictures of his nan looking rather less than amused, particularly at sections where she is the target of his humour (nan gets a video for the first time and hides in the kitchen so her voice doesn't get put on the tape as she's recording a programme, nan moves into her sheltered housing with a warden, nan referring to the Big Light, etc...). His mum takes it all in good part, although she does look slightly embarrassed as son lampoons various aspects of her behaviour in his routine (why *do* mums keep a carrier bag full of carrier bags and prefer Rola Cola, anyway?). The rest of the audience, including Corrie Cast, are in stitches more often than not.
The jokes are wide-ranging, but always funny and something that the vast majority can relate to. According to Mr Kay, when talking to taxi drivers there are only two questions available, no matter how hard you try to vary the subject: 1. been busy? 2. What time y'on till?
Other subjects include Hobnobs (the marines of the biscuit world when it comes to dunking), videos (of the early 80s, with remote controls on a wire, and being maimed by them), family weddings (including Uncle Nobby - everyone's got one - bitchy guests, and dad's reaction to cheesecake, with a brief nod in the direction of his famous garlic bread catchphrase), Connie's funeral ( - Who? - You know, Connie. Connie connie connie. - Oh right, repeating her name, now it's completely clear who she is...), London fish and chip shops ("have you got owt moist?") and Bullseye.
The Bullseye content from the live performance is reflected in the theme for the DVD content list - it's Peter Kay's face appearing as Bully used to, with the Bullseye board in the background. If you leave it on this screen for any length of time, however, the theme music from Bullseye will probably drive you potty.
One gripe I'd have about this DVD is its complete lack of extras. The opening and closing sequences make an amusing setting for the live performance, but don't really warrant the title of extra, so all you get is the chapter list. According to Amazon, there should be a behind the scenes tour diary on the DVD as an extra, however it must be very behind the scenes, I've never managed to find it! It also claims the running time is 100 minutes for the main feature and 25 minutes of extras, however again the version I have has around 80 minutes of main feature only.
The production values are good enough - it is after all mainly a live performance, with the limitations of filming with an audience that that entails. There aren't too many cuts to watch the audience reaction, and when there are it is usually to see his mum or nan (good) or famous fans (not so good). I suspect that this is because a lot of Peter Kay's humour is quite physical - he not only used different voices to good effect, but different personalities too, and his appearance seems to change when he does. He does impressions involving actions - Uncle Nobby dancing, Dads running and small boys at weddings, that wouldn't be the same if you were made to look at the audience all the time.
To me, overall it felt fairly short, and with a tour of well over 100 nights, I would have welcomed some highlights from other venues, for example. Including other footage would have made the DVD longer, and given more value for money too.
I'd recommend the DVD, despite the lack of extras, simply because of how funny it is. It's suitable for a wide audience, from OAPs (my great aunt and grandma both watched and thought it was very funny) to younger teenagers and everyone in between.
One of the good things about Peter Kay's humour is that it is very family based, without much swearing or any offensive material. There's content that even younger children can relate to (mum never buying brand colas, for example), with a hefty dose of nostalgia. It's not humour at the expense of other people - well, apart from his mum and nan - and overall has quite a gentle feel, similar to Victoria Wood. Despite this it is, as I said earlier, knicker-wettingly funny, so expect your sides to ache.
I've watched the DVD about half a dozen times inside a month, and I still find it funny, which has to be a good sign.
*Other Information*
Released in November 2003, the region 2 DVD is available from www.amazon.co.uk for around £15, full retail price is £19.99.
It's a 15 certificate, and contains mild swearing and innuendo. I'd have no problems showing it to younger teenagers.

Review of Peter Kay - Live At The Bolton Albert Halls (DVD)
Advantages: fantastic observational comedy Disadvantages: no extras on the DVD
...again. And it works with Peter Kay, because although I never usually want to see or read anything twice, I’ve watched this four times and I’ve only had it for a week. Kay is rumoured to be taking a break from stand-up for a few years, which makes me very glad I have this DVD.
Peter Kay is from Bolton, and if you still aren’t sure which one he is, he did the beer advert where he wanted to pack his mum off into a home. You might also have seen him ... ...itself isn’t exciting - just Peter on stage, with some chairs, and some balloons tied to tins of paint. There are absolutely no extras on the DVD which is disappointing, not even any hidden ones, unless I’m very much mistaken . The graphics are better than average though – they are done in the style of ITV’s Bullseye (which also gets a mention as part of his stand-up.)
Don’t expect to watch this and then leave it in the DVD case. You’ll be quoting ...

A BIT OF BACKGROUND
----------------------------------
Peter Kay was born on 2. July 1973 in Bolton , Greater Manchester. He has a wife Susan and baby son, Michael.
You may have seen Peter before in the John Smiths bitter adverts or making an appearance in Coronation Street. In 2000 he won "Best New TV Comedy" at the British comedy awards for his series " That Peter Kay ... ...Before hitting the"big time" Peter experienced a series of dead end jobs including toilet roll packer, cash and carry sales and petrol pump attendant. He uses these experiences in the Stand Up shows with his sharp, observational humour. He is loved by Southerners and Northerners alike for his comic portrayals of life in lower middle class Bolton. Childhood memories play a huge part and his family are always forefront in Peter's stories. His wife, mum ...

I’d never heard of Peter Kay until I saw him on Parkinson one Saturday night and found myself rolling around the furniture with tears rolling down my face, and my cheeks hurting from laughing so much, so the next day I went out and brought this DVD for £15.99 from Woolworths, you can buy it on video, but I prefer DVD because you get extras, however, I was disappointed with this when I got home because it has NO extras, if I had known I could ... ...Peter Kay has also starred and written the TV series Phoenix Nights, which I have to admit I have never seen, but it does come highly recommended by my brother as well as other ciao members. Peter Kay also stars in the John Smith adverts, and I still find the running bomb highly amusing. For this DVD, Peter returns back home to Bolton to play in front of a packed Bolton Albert Hall as part of his “Mum wants a bungalow tour“. In the audience ...

...a big fan of Mr. Peter Kay, on this DVD he is simply sublime. This is what he does best..Stand-Up comedy. The venue Bolton's Albert Hall.
The initial Taxi scene.. was the only weakness. It would of been a lot worse without Peter's quick wit in the back of the cab. Naturally, the taxi was late picking him up and drove him to the Albert Hall. Though running late Peter Kay's did not lose an audience member as the Albert Hall was packed full of 'J' ... ...three occasions. The only slight sadness is that their are no hidden back stage clips that gives you a 'fly on a wall' feel to it, which draws the viewer in to the workings more.
Ideal for all. A classic remedy, a must for all Peter Kay fanatics. Enjoy. ...

Advantages: It makes you laugh a lot Disadvantages: none
I first saw Peter Kay on Jonathan Ross. One bit that amused me was that he was in the same green room as a pretentious pop-star who had brought ‘imaginary’ Japanese people with her who just posed. Peter Kay pulled some great ‘they’re nuts!’ faces and his rapid wit contrasted delightfully with their posturing silence.
This DVD was an opportunity to see the effect he had on a live audience. Despite the introduction and ending in which he did a rather ... ...a VD player.
Although Peter Kay delivers the odd joke, this is quite rare, and his main thrust comes in how he makes fun of people getting drunk and dancing at weddings. His little podgy body and huge smile combine irresistibly to comic effect when he demonstrates how some people walk onto the dance floor beginning the dance as they approach, and how some try to resist dancing at all only to burst into a John Travolta at the last moment.
His Uncle ...

Advantages: Very funny, excellent value Disadvantages: Obviously not for those who don't appreciate Northern humour!
Another christmas present for me to review for all my fellow Ciao-ers!
PeterKay has long been one of my favourite stand up comedians. Whilst obviously being well known, he has not fallen into the trap some well-known stand ups do and become commercialised, appearing on every other TV show trying to plug their own failing tour.
Peter sold out both of his the tours featured in this double box set, the second one being part of his record breaking 'Mum wants a bungalow tour'. In 180 nights he reached over 300,000 people with his infectious, down to earth northern humour.
The first DVD is taken from Blackpool Tower - hence the name. He runs through a multitude of topics and all are smoothly linked in and just as funny as the last one. He shows great comedian-audience interaction, often jumping his 18(ish) stone frame down to be ...

Advantages: It's Peter Kay!! Disadvantages: Seen it already
To be honest, I'm lucky I don't have "Live at the BoltonAlbertHall" because otherwise I would have felt like I had wasted my money. If your read the reviews given about the DVD, you will see thatwe all agree on the fact that "Live at Manchester Arena" is just a new filming of the same play at the AlbertHall, but on a different stage. At the beggining you do get PeterKay walking towards the stage while singing "The way to Amarillo" which is quite funny, especially when he's got 2 big guys behind him imitating the female background voices. To my opinion that's where the DVD finishes. Yes, it's PeterKay, yes he's great and yes, the act is as funny as it can be. The jokes are hilarious, his comments on life's reality are superb and his dancing moves could dazzle off those of John Travolta, yet I have seen all of it already on the "Live ...
