If you only buy one DVD this year then make it this one. A cliché I know but it is very fitting in these circumstances as I truly do think you would be hard pushed to find a better movie. From beginning to end this movie entertains, takes you through all sorts of emotions and stays original which is a thing many movies try but fail to do.
The plot. ~~~~~~~ Ben Whishaw plays the lead role as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille a young man born in to the quite horrible, somewhat disgusting stench of eighteenth century Paris. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born to a market trader who knowing she cant look after him leaves his small body lying under her market stall beside the fish heads and rats, a crime for which she is sentenced to death by hanging, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is then taken into what can very loosely be described as care where he is abused and finally once he is old enough sold on as a slave.
Against all odds Jean-Baptiste manages to survive everything that is thrown at him and lives his life relatively happily with his favourite thing being scents. He has an amazing sense of smell and is able to smell single scents in a place surrounded with various smells and pick them out, however this sense of smell is what will lead Jean-Baptiste to kill.
In the centre of Paris stands a perfumery owned by one of the most famous perfumers Giuseppe Baldini, played by the outstanding Dustin Hoffman. Baldini had once been the most
celebrated perfumer around having created some of the most famous perfumes of the time. However many new faces were arriving and creating new and exciting perfumes and Baldini seemed to have lost his touch and had not created a new perfume for some time. When the young Jean-Baptiste Grenouille appears in his shop claiming to know every scent that goes into the latest perfume that is taking Paris by storm, Baldini shrugs this off an impossible until Jean-Baptiste takes a beaker and re-creates it right in front of his eyes.
Jean-Baptiste is given a job with Baldini and helps him get his perfumery back on track but mean time has a secret attempt at making a perfume of his own ongoing. Above all the scents that Jean-Baptiste loves there is one scent which stands out, one that he cannot bottle but wishes dearly that he could, the pure scent of a virginal young female. Jean-Baptiste has previously learned how to extract the scent from rose petals and decides this is how he will attempt to bottle the scent of a woman but for this they must be dead and Jean-Baptiste who finds distinguishing between right and wrong difficult due to his upbringing begins to kill.
As the body count of young females reaches twelve, panic breaks out as people rush to protect their daughters from who ever is committing these hideous crimes but an unrepentant and unrelenting Jean-Baptiste Grenouille continues in his quest to find the one missing ingredient from his masterpiece perfume.
My opinion. ~~~~~~~~~ I watched this movie last night and decided straight away it was well worth reviewing. I am fairly hard to impress these days when it comes to movies as most seem to pinch at least a few ideas from other movies thus making them somewhat predictable. This movie was very different from anything I had ever seen before and therefore kept me intrigued from beginning to end.
The acting in it was very good, especially the lead role of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) and baldini the perfumer (Dustin Hoffman) although there wasn’t a performance anywhere that let the movie down. There are a few scenes that some may find disturbing such as the beginning where Jean-Baptiste as a new born baby lies on the brink of death with rats crawling over his tiny frame and some of the scenes where as an adult he murders his naked victims. Although the murder scenes are not like some movies full of blood and guts they are still disturbing.
For me this film was written, produced and acted out to perfection. I enjoyed every minute of this movie and in fact can’t wait to watch it again. My fiancée who often has a very different taste in movies loved this film too so I know it’s not just something I enjoyed but a movie for people with various tastes.

To sum up. ~~~~~~~~~ This movie is based on the best selling novel by Patrick Suskind. Whether or not you should read the book first I cannot comment as I have not read it myself. Therefore I obviously cannot comment on whether or not the book or the movie is better but I can say without doubt that the movie is outstanding and that I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good thriller. As a new movie you can still expect to pay around £12 to £15 pounds for this DVD, I personally paid £12.99 for it and believe it to be money very well spent. Go on treat yourself to a truly great movie.
Thank you all for reading !!
