I sort've took a risk shelling out 20 bucks on this. I'd never seen an episode or Peep Show before in my life, I was simply going on the huge wave of hype this show has been riding in recent years. But I couldn't be more happy with this buy.
It deals with two very different, but equally socially stunted, flatmates. Mark Corrigan is a working stiff, paper pushing for JLB credit under the supervision of nutty boss Alan Johnson. When he'snot obsessing about history, he's hopelessly drooling over workmate Sophie over a hot photocopier. Jez is a unemployed, womanising wannabe musician, in a dead-end band with unintelligable idolised mate 'Super Hans'.
'Peep Show', of course, is most known for it's unusual 'point of view' camera style. This is original and frankly, leads to some hilarious happenings, but once you get past the cute camera effects, you've got a really well written and witty show here. It's the brainchild of two utterly legendary British comdians, Mitchell and Webb, and their genius shines through in every one of the 18 episodes here. Of course, their sense of humour is very...British, and it's understandable why some may miss the point of some of the rather dark comedy that Peep Show incorporates.
You'll see what I mean as we have a look at the episode 'Shrooming' from SERIES 3
Mark is away at a conference for his company JLB credit, so his flatmate Jez sees this as an ideal opportunity to organise a magic mushroom party in the flat in his absence, in the hope of winning the attentions of ex-girlfriend 'Big Suze'. His plan is 'to get her really really high and try and put my hand up her jumper', but Jez's plans go awry when Mark is sent home with a bad case of the flu. Jeremy, always the pragmatist, manages to find a cunning solution to his flatmate problem and have the party nonetheless...
Unlike most comedies that rely on quick gags or one-off punchlines, this show has you laughing hysterically the first time over, and then even more so the second time. Like nothing else out there. It has to be experienced. The best of British.
Oh and the special features are hilarious too. Featurettes from Series 1 include a Jez's hilarious video application for Big Brother (I'd be very up for threesomes. Not really a gay thing. But really....that, and allother aspects of my personality, are negotionble) as well as his last will and testament. Mark fans will find his awkward and brilliant video CV.
The commentaries are limited, which I was very disappointed about personally. Commentaries can only be found on half of the episodes in the box set, and even then, only one is hosted by Mitchell and Webb themselves. Apart from that though, the featurettes add extra bang for your buck with this purchase.
Peep Show just keeps getting better and better- the last series, that has just reached its climax on Channel 4, was their best yet, indicating that the boys still have original ideas and a lot of funny juice left in them. Hoorah! Bring on the Series 4 DVD!
