Advantages: Historically accurate, covers both political and military side of the conflict, no pansy romantics. Disadvantages: Doesn't have the big-budget explosions.
...'Tora! Tora! Tora!' was released back in 1970, and has recently been re-released on DVD to coincide with the release of the acclaimed 'PearlHarbor'. Both films dramatise the events of 7th December 1941, when the Japanese attacked the American Pacific Fleet stationed at PearlHarbor. As the opinion title suggests, I consider this original film to be superior to the big-budget Hollywood re-make.
Since both films essentially cover the same subject I will concentrate on the differences between the two, which essentially boils down to their attitude and style. 'Tora!' was made using two seperate production units, one in Japan, one in America. In doing so it was the first film ever to use Japanese historical documents about World War II, and it shows. It shows the events from both the American and Japanese perspectives, in particular...

Advantages: Great Story. Excellent special effects. Terrific acting. Disadvantages: None.
...For a war film there are a lot of soppy moments in this three hour epic movie.
I shall try not to give away the plot as I assume a lot of people will not yet have seen this film. However, I think it is fairly obvious that the film is centred on the surprise attack by the Japanese Air Force on the American Pacific navel fleet at berth in PearlHarbor in Hawaii during the Second World War. By the way that is not a mis-spelling of harbor. This is an American film and that is how they spell harbor.
The film is split into three main sections. The build-up before the attack, the actual attack and the retribution after the attack.
In the first part of the film all of the characters are established, the main three of which are Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck), Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) and Evelyn Stewart (played by Kate...

Advantages: I cant think of any Disadvantages: Too many factual discrpeancies.
...Pearl Harbour the war tale of the Japanese air strike on the American Pacific port of Pearl Harbour. In the film the main story is a love story between a woman and a naval officer and their fight to stay together, this really spoils the film.
This film had a huge budget to make the film and with this you should think that the movie should turn out half decent. With only 117 factual discrepancies it hasnt turned out that bad than has it. The tale of Pearl Harbour would have been just fine without the stupid love story but with this love story that main plot of the real tale is sum what distorted.
The movie had a huge premier inside a battle ship with all these stars, what justification is there to spend all of that money when there are people starving to death in Africa how can they justify spending a huge sum of money to launch...
