Advantages: Uma Thurman Disadvantages: Everything else
2004's Paycheck only made it into my DVD collection by a matter of sheer luck. I had some spare cash, and decided to pick something up from the new releases section. Definitly an impulse purchase, seeing as I hadn't never heard anything about the film.. if I had I may have known that it would only take a month for a film of this standard to be put in the bargain bin. Or the regular bin. Paycheck is directed by John Woo, the man behind 'Mission Impossible ... ...these scientific experiments, it makes Paycheck truly a sci-fi movie. Shorty (Paul Giamatti) is responsible for clearing Michael's memories and he explains that if his brain temperature goes too high during the process then he could be turned into a vegetable. Michael and Shorty are more than just work colleagues though, and are actually good friends. It is Shorty than will try to keep Michael level headed. As Michael's memories are cleared they ...

Advantages: plot fits together like a glued puzzle Disadvantages: seems a bit bland, lacks in depth enjoyment
...Almost certainly to Jennifer Lopez's envy, Ben Affleck (Michael Jennings) must have had a field day on the set of Paycheck with the gorgeous Uma Therman (Rachel Porter) while she was making music videos and earning wads of cash.
Anyway, Paycheck begins by showing a memory elimination process being performed on Michael Jennings, who then wakes up to remember none of the last 3 months. He has no problem with this as he is very partial to anything that can boost his bank account. So eventually he agrees to trade 3 working years of his life that he won't remember, with a shady electronics company that will wipe his memory once he has finished whatever it is he has to do.
Time passes in the blink of an eye, and once the 3 years are up he wakes up to find the FBI on his tail and his 92 million dollar cheque forfeited for a bag of comparably...

Advantages: Fast paced action film with a good plot Disadvantages: The first half hour is slow and some weak scenes
...I love this film. It wasn´t a huge success at the box office and the critics didn´t like it. True it has a slow start and if you like action you may think about turining it off, but it is well worth the wait because after the initial scenes which centre around the characters and the relationships that develop between them, the action kicks in and doesn´t stop till the final conclusion.
Ben Affleck plays a computer engineer who reverse engineers products for big IT companies. He dedicates months of his life, does the job and then gets his memory wiped with a laser. Of course he then receives his check.
He is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to make millions by an old friend. The job promises the ultimate "paycheck" to make him rich and secure for life. Once on the job he has a romance with the character played by Uma Thurman...

DVD Description
Adapted from a mind-bending sci-fi thriller by Philip K. Dick, the slick and riveting PAYCHECK is directed by John Woo (THE KILLER, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE II)--the king of artful gunfighting flicks--who shows off his agility here with flat-out, white-knuckle cinematic entertainment. Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) is a high-paid engineer who works on hush-hush computer inventions and technology for shady companies. Later, his memory is wiped clean, so he has no recollection of his work. His so-called friend Rethrick (Aaron Eckhardt, the master of smarmy mean-spiritedness, as in IN THE COMPANY OF MEN) offers him enough money to retire by working on a project at Rethrick's company, Allcom. When Jennings emerges three years later, sans memory, he tries to collect his paycheck. At the bank, he's handed a manila envelope filled with cryptic items he doesn't recognise, and told he voluntarily forfeited his entire paycheck. He also has a stunning girlfriend named Dr. Rachel Porter (Uma Thurman) who is likewise ensnared in the conspiracy. Jennings must somehow piece together the clues he left for himself, and find out why everyone is out to kill him. As usual, Dick's story is the basis for a killer script that travels from point A to Z with gripping immediacy. The clues left for Jennings are amusing writerly devices, intricately pieced together. Woo clearly enjoyed choreographing the wild gunfighting and chase sequences (slo-mo bullets aplenty), sending Affleck and Thurman on the run with a BMW motorcycle.
