I'm 52, grandmother of 9, poet, wannabe writer, breed Nubian goats, and am going to start making soaps and fudge from my goat milk eventually. I'd like to become semi self -sufficient; I have planted numerous fruit trees and keep chickens for eggs.

This is one of those movies that is both enjoyable to watch and can prompt you onto better things, if you hear the message.
When a young reporter, whose vehicle has been damaged, is given the keys to a Jaguar by a man who walks away only with the admonishment to "pay it forward", he sets out to follow the trail of the concept back to find out where it began ...
Trevor (Haley Joel Osment) is a serious child, a product of an abusive double-alcoholic relationship, trying desperately to keep his mother off of the dreaded bottle and hoping his absent father will not return. When a new teacher (Kevin Spacey) sets his social studies class an assignment to go out and do something - "Think of an idea to change our world - and put it into ACTION." - little does he know how one of his pupils will take his words to heart ... nor how it will affect his own existence.
Trevor's mother is excellently characterized by Helen Hunt as recovering alcoholic, Arlene. A single-mother now, working two jobs, and hiding the bottle for those times when she really needs a drink ... only to find that Trevor has found and disposed of most of them.
And what of Trevor's teacher, himself? How did he receive the scars on his face? What is his story? How will he react when his assignment to the class comes back to interfere in his own life? Can he face the ghosts of his past?
Not everything that is attempted is successful in this movie but it teaches that the main thing is to try. I didn't like the ending, and felt that it was unnecessary but I loved this movie, and the "pay it forward" idea is a concept that we could actually do in the real world. There is a wonderful lesson here, that we could all do something to change the world into a nicer place. This is one of those movies you could watch with your pre-teens and have a good heart-to-heart about afterwards.
Angie Dickinson is absolutely brilliant as a homeless woman. We spent a little while ... " Is it her?" " Might be." "Looks like her. " "Think it is ..." It was nice to see her back on the screen, it's been awhile.
There are a few issues in this movie and some are skimmed over but could provide a starting point for discussions with your children. I'd deem this as a family movie and one well worth watching. I just wasn't too happy with the ending.

Advantages: Somewhat original story, original concept, great performances, touching, makes you think Disadvantages: A bit over sentimental for some (you'll need to be armed with tissues!)
