along with his ability to produce outstanding studio albums, has given him a reputation as the doyen of short-tempered dad-rock. His ability to cut through the gritty sound and grainy visuals (this video looks for all the world like a transfer from an over-exposed 8mm film) is what makes this release worthy of a place on fans' shelves. We get a slab of good stuff, including "Friday Street", a stonking "The Changing Man", "Woodcutter's Son" and no fewer than 15 other tracks. As once 'twas with The Who--and neo-mods will find that this performance reaffirms Weller's debt to that era--Weller's restrained belligerence carries the show, to the extent that his frequent and incongruously musoid guitar-switchings and tuning adjustments are easily forgiven. --Roger Thomas

The modfather live Review ofPaul Weller - Live At The Royal Albert Hall DVDby
Paulshistory
Advantages: Paul Weller live DVD Disadvantages: Can't be seen full screen on normal TV
I've followed Paul Weller now since he started with the Jam in 1977, through his days with the Style Council, and now throughout his 'solo' career. I've seen him live 6 times, and for those of you not fortunate enough to have seen him live, a live DVD like this one is the next best thing.
Paul Weller has inspired the 1990's bands such as Oasis and Blur, and got the title 'The Modfather'. He regularly plays on 'Later with Jools Holland', and in February ... ...to London the next time Paul played the Albert Hall just to see the concert.
Anyway, about this DVD. It captures Paul Weller and his band doing a 95 minute live set that comes solely from Paul's solo career. The full band and track listing can be found at the end of the review. I've always thought that Paul Weller sounds even better live than he does on vinyl/cd, and this DVD captures the vibrant energy that is evident whenever he is on stage.
