Newman, who plays Butch Cassidy, is the first thing the audience sees after the 'projector' style opening. The audience immediately knows that this is a character that they will like. After the many repetitions of western films, the audience expects the clean shaven and smartly presented man to be the hero. The part of Butch Cassidy was first given to Steve McQueen (from Bullet) but he turned it down. The first part of the Sundance Kid was actually given to Paul Newman but Newman was then offered Butch's character. ...of Butch and Jack Lemmon, Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen were all considered or offered the part of Sundance! Thank god they turned it down. It would definitely not have been as good a film as it was had it been different actors. The True Life Bit~~ If you didn't know, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid were real life characters and the film is based on real events although has obviously been dramatised for the sake of the audience. Through the making of the film, Butch Cassidy's real sister would frequently visit the set and chat to the cast. She really approved of the way the story was being told and would tell the cast and crew little snippets of her brothers antics in between shoots. She was asked to endorse the film when it was released, which she agreed to do but only if she could watch it all the way through before doing... Read review

...We all know that this film is a classic, but there is more to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid than meets the eye, more of that later. Everything to do with the film seems to set high standards. The pairing of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the main characters created a magical and memorable screen partnership that has never been bettered, the script has the right balance of light heartedness and drama, the musical score surpasses the role of mere background music and is used to bring a warm atmosphere to many scenes and all of this helped make director George Roy Hill and writer William Goldman's classic western a multi-award winning and financially successful box office attraction.
