Ford gives a good rendition of Jack Ryan. He was to follow it up with Clear and Present Danger a few years later, but is very good in the role here. Ryan is a retired CIA agent on holiday with his family in Ireland. As bad luck would have it, he interferes with an IRA attack, and becomes the target himself. However, CIA expert Ryan has other ideas, and the last thing any terrorists want to be doing is targeting him.

Equally excellent is Sean Bean as IRA soldier Sean Miller, and Patrick Bergin and Anne Archer are solid in their portrayals as Kevin O'Donnell and Ryan's wife Cathy repectively. The remainder of the cast do well, although it is not really the cast this film is memorable for - it is more the explosive nature and tense political plot that give it high entertainment value. Some of the filming is excellent work, and director Phillip Noyce really does know how to give us a good adventure spy action thriller.
The film does deviate from the book somewhat, which annoyed author Tom Clancy, and he stepped away from its production. The film is decent enough, and gives us some thirlling entertainment. Yes, it is very similar to other action films in terms of non stop fighting and a predictable ending, but ultimately, it's a popular plotline to follow, and Noyce does it very well.
Advantages: Great Film, Good Acting, Good Story, Disadvantages: None
...a slight problem that for Patriot Games he had to have shorter hair, after having shot the end scene, Sean Bean phoned the Lady Chatterly production and advised them that he had good and bad news. The good news was that he managed to keep his hair, the bad news was that he split his eye open. He needed 8 stiches where a boat hook hit him in the final scene.
The boat hook Sean mentioned was actually swung by Harrison Ford while filming these scenes, ... ...just under his left eyebrow.
OPINION:
I really enjoyed this film and do recommend it to anyone who likes a good thriller. Surprisingly it actually does the book justice and is worth seeing and it has some excellent acting in it.
Possible drawback is the very much American view on the Irish trouble, but I did not think that this distracted that much from the film.
Personally I think that this film really does carry on the story of Jack Ryan and ...

Advantages: tells of various political factions and who is allied to whom Disadvantages: why does house and family have to be involved?
Patriot Games is a combination thriller and political sideshow. It
is fast moving film dealing with the factions of international discord
and cliques. The storyline is heavily involved in the domino effect
in which one scene of mindblowing disaster is interconnected with
the intertwinnings of another cult wanting money or powerful demands.
Side issues and how to illiminate them or move them on to someone
else is what gives the main character ... ...true assets. He can call in favours to
protect his family which drives the story to a hightened climax.
Governments do not talk to other governments unless they have to.
Surveillance is the key and how it is used.Watch for little side bits
of getting one guy ahead of the other. ...

Advantages: Amazing plot, and Harrison Ford! Disadvantages: None
There aren't many modern day actors that can claim to have success in every single film they work in. However, in my opinion anyway, Harrison Ford is such an actor. Just look at him repertoire - Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Fugitive, Air Force One, Clear and Present Danger. I can't quite define what makes him such an enjoyable actor to watch - I suppose it must be that he is so flexible, and is so utterly convincing in his parts that you can't help but enjoy it. He can play an action hero, but also a entirely convincing family man. He really gets into his parts.
PatriotGames in one of the earlier films in his modern run of success. He played ex-CIA agent Jack Ryan, who after intervening in an extremist Irish attack on a royal, has to fight to protect his wife and child, as well as his own life, after killing one of the terrorists ...
