***INTRO***
This film produced and directed by Wim Wenders' is probably one of most well known, critically acclaimed, and successful movie, winning a number of international prizes including the Cannes Palm D'or (1984), Bafta, Berlin Silver Bear, French Film Critic's prize). Screen play by playwright Sam Sheppard soundtrack by Ry Cooder. I saw a promotional copy that at 147 minutes was a little on the long side. The film is suitable only for person's 15 years and over.
***THE STORY***
This haunting story turned road movie tells the tale of Travis, a man lost in his own in his own private hell. I quote from the cover. " Presumed dead for four years, he reappears from the desert on the Mexican border, world - weary and an amnesiac. He traces his brother Wait who is bringing up Hunter, his seven - year - old son, his ex - wife Jane having abandoned him at Wait's door several years before. As virtual strangers, hunter and Travis begin to build a wary friendship and conspire to find Jane and bring her back to be a real family."
Eventually they find Jane working in a legal brothel in Huston.
***CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
The film opens to a desert scene near the Mexican border to the sound of Ry Cooders slide guitar - wadis and other desert geological features abound. The panoramic sun - bleached views are quite stunning and Ry sure sounds good. As the film progresses we move further into an urban landscape with plenty of distance film shots. The dialogue is secondary to Ry Cooders sound track.
***MY OPINION***
The movie has a haunting rather sad story with melancholy undertones. My copy lasted 147 minutes this tends to make it a rather long movie considering its story content. At times a Ry Cooder CD might be more appealing. Harry Dean Stanton acting is extraordinary and carries the film through its more dull moments.

The review started off so well I was really disappointed when it just kind of fizzled out. If you add more info and some opinion I'd be more than happy to rerate..Cheers, Mike
Advantages: It was free, broadened my horizons, keeps you occupied for 2.5 hours Disadvantages: Rather slow-paced and does go on a bit longer than necessary
