Everyone I know was talking about how good this book was by Cecelia Ahern and I must admit I hadn’t heard of it. As time went on and more and more people mentioned it regularly I thought I might give the film a go so I bought the dvd and one evening I thought I would subject my boyfriend to it. After all the opinions from my friends I thought it would be a good film to watch. What I found was what my friends had said, it was really good, even my boyfriend would agree (although when questioned “he had something in his eye” in the teary moments) The film started in utter chaos, there was a huge fight it was very loud and things were thrown everywhere. Then the opening credits appear and after we are at Gerrys funeral so here the story begins.
Holly is devastated about the passing of her husband, we follow her on her journey of grieving (she holds her self together when in public but behind closed doors she is falling apart) then she isolates herself and hides away in the apartment her and Gerry shared, she cant seem to find a way to
move on and be happy again. Its her 30th birthday and her loved ones decide to take action to make her move on finally, they decide they have let her wallow enough so they turn up at the apartment (whilst Holly is singing and totally embarrasses herself). They help her to straighten out the place whilst they are all there a cake arrives and inside is the first contact from Gerry, this is a teary moment obviously and holly thinks this is a sick joke but realises no one would be so mean. From then on Holly receives these letters that Gerry has organised before he passed away which all end with “Ps: I love you. These letters pop up randomly and always in a different way, every time a letter arrives I found myself with a tear in my eye. She goes on to find that Gerry even booked a holiday for her and her two friends in Ireland. During this trip her friends both have some exciting news of their lives and Holly once again decides to isolate herself back at home. Her Mum is against these letters and she says they are unhealthy for Holly but Holly finds herself living for these letters telling her what to do next. Eventually though in her own time Holly does begin to move on, she starts to design shoes as a career and she is really passionate about it. With this comes her confidence and she is finally ready to begin building her new life and once again be a part of her friends and families lives.
This film brings all stages of grieving together and shows that there will be light at the end of the tunnel and that it is possible to continue without the love of your life. It also shows that you will find your way out the other side in your own time. I felt it was well acted out and at each crucial point in the film you find the emotions outstanding. The film does seem like a strange idea and I understand Hollys mothers concern around the letters, I mean how is anyone meant to move on with their life with the deceased husband still writing to them and keeping hold of the partner left behind.
I thought Hilary Swank played this part well, she showed all the emotions you would expect of a strong partner left behind. We had Gerard Butler as Gerry in the flash backs throughout the film about the couples past. They made such a good partnership. This film is so emotional and will really pull on your heart. I really enjoyed the story. The film was executed well it keeps you guessing (even though you can pretty much guess what is coming next) but it is more how is the next communication arrive? I have mentioned the emotions quite a bit throughout this review but it is a highly emotional film, the emotions were captured so well and really made this film, with out these emotions from the actors/actresses it would have been a totally different story. It is an easy film to follow. I would recommend this film to anyone who is looking for a film with a good storyline and doesn’t want a mind testing film. You can find this film for sale on the internet for around £4 so it really was good value for money, It was worth every penny to me. It makes you look at what you have and shouldn’t take for granted.
This review will also be on dooyoo under the same name.
