Martin Shaw displays his versatility as an actor in the role of Adam Dalgliesh, bringing dignity and gravitas to this double feature. As in Judge John Deed, he has the ability to grip one as the main character around which the others revolve. A more contemplative persona in this, reflective of his position as a top ranking detective, his character encounters a motley collection of tortured souls in the quest for justice, first in a remote windswept monastery, and then in a stately house that contains a museum called the Murder Room. These atmospheric and absorbing dramas are high on the psychological scale with an air of menace and madness creeping about under the surface. They keep the viewer guessing what will happen next. Thoroughly recommended.
