I can watch this film again and again. I never tire of it. It is laugh out loud funny and romantic too.
This is a story of two very different families from very different cultures. It is set in a very small coastal town called Elk Snout. Here lives our first family. Dean Proffitt, single father of four (Charlie, Joey, Travis and Greg) lives in a small run down hut of a house. Although he loves his children, he does not discipline them very well. Or himself come to that. He let's the housework mount up and lets his children do whatever they want.
Now to our second family. Although they may have all the correct table manners and be tidy, there is no love here. Joanna and Grant Stayton are married, but they show no affection towards each other. They live a life of luxury aboard a gorgeous, big yacht. They also have servants to tend to their needs. Money does not bring happiness though.
Joanna Stayton being rich, has let the money go to her head and thinks she is so much better that all around her. She is a
snobby stuck up bitch.
She calls in a local carpenter from the town Elk Snout, where they've docked. She needs a shoe cabinet built as they are cluttering up the floor. The carpenter she calls in is Dean Proffitt. She looks and him as if he were dirt on her shoe and has him watched whilst he is working. When he is done he shows her his work. It really is good, but she insists she won't pay because it is made in oak not cedar and that he should have known it called for cedar. She hadn't specified the type she required, she just assumed he would know. They have a big argument and both Dean and his tools end up in the water.
Losing his tools in the water is a big set back for Dean. They are not cheap to replace and he is quite understandably angry at her. For the loss of his tools, waste of time on an unpaid job, for her rudeness towards him and for being chucked overboard. She is one nasty piece of work and when the opportunity arrives to get his sweet revenge he grabs it with both hands.
His chance arrives when a local news station puts out a report of a young woman who was fished out of the sea. This woman being the very same woman who was so rude to him and cost him all his tools (she had fallen from the deck of the boat in the night whilst trying to retrieve a ring). The woman was reported to have amnesia and couldn’t remember who she was.
It's perfect for Dean. He can just feed her a few lies and have her cooking and cleaning for him in no time. Also, looking after his boys. Though she was out of order before, how can he do this it is so morally wrong? Although she has lost her memory she remains stuck up and rude. How will her new found life style affect her attitude to life and other people?
One of my favourite parts of the film is after Joanna/Annie's long day of thoroughly cleaning up the house and jobs Dean left her. The boys come back to find her staring blankly into the distance and going "bur-bur-bur-b-b-bur-bur". There must have been a ton of stuff to do. They then revive her by dumping her into a barrel of ice cold water outside.
There is a really satisfying part in the film when Annie puts a teacher in her place by correcting her on something. I love the end lines too. Obviously I won't say what they are. I'll just say that it is touching.
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn being a couple of screen, have great on screen chemistry. They work really well together. Goldie is really good as the rich stuck up bitch in the beginning. I bet that was a really fun role to play.
In this film you will find lots of laughs and a heart-warming tale. Catalina, the title of my op is the name of a woman in another heart-warming tale, which is told by Dean in the film. You'll find out more if you watch it.
I think the main message this film is trying to convey is that no matter how much money you have, it doesn't guarantee you happiness. Only love even in poverty can bring true happiness. I think we all know that really. No matter how much I long to win the lottery, I know it doesn't matter that I don't have a lot of money because I am happy and in love with my husband James and have a wonderful loving family. Sorry if I'm being too sickly for some of you it's just how I feel.
