Overboard: It's the craziest mix-up ever! Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell dazzle the screen in this buoyant and screwball comedy of memory-making and memory-faking. One of Hollywood's most dynamic screen pairs Hawn and Russell make the most of every hilarious situation in this delightful riches to rags romance that's perfect entertainment for anyone who appreciates a great practical joke. Hawn is Joanna Stayton the pampered wife of a pretentious yacht-owning socialite. When their boat gets stuck for repairs Joanna employs carpenter Dean Profitt (Russell) to improve her closet space. But when Dean asks to be paid he's blatantly turned down by the "nothing is ever good enough for me" Joanna. So when Joanna falls overboard and gets a bad case of amnesia Dean takes advantage of the situation and in a stroke of retributive genius tells her that she's his wife and the mother of his four unruly children!

This is a story of two very different families from very different cultures. It is set in a very small coastal town called Elk Snout. Here lives our first family. Now to our second family. Although they may have all the correct table manners and be tidy, there is no love here. Joanna and Grant Stayton are married, but they show no affection towards each other. This is a story of two very different families from very different cultures. It is set in a very small coastal town called Elk Snout. Here lives our first family. Dean Proffitt, single father of four (Charlie, Joey, Travis and Greg) lives in a small run down hut of a house. Although he loves his children, he does not discipline them very well. Or himself come to that. He let's the housework mount up and lets his children do whatever they want.
Now to our second family. Although they may have all the correct table manners and be tidy, there is no love here. Joanna and Grant Stayton are married, but they show no affection towards each other. They live a life of luxury aboard a gorgeous, big yacht. They also have servants to tend to their needs. Money does not bring happiness though.
Joanna Stayton being rich, has let the money go to her head and thinks she is so much better that all around her. She is a snobby stuck up bitch.
She calls in a local carpenter from the town Elk Snout, where they've docked. She needs a shoe cabinet built as they are cluttering up the floor. The carpenter she calls in is Dean Proffitt. She looks and him as if he were dirt on her shoe and has him watched whilst he is working. When he is done he shows her his work. It really is good, but she insists she won't pay because it is made in oak not cedar and that he should have known it called for cedar. She hadn't specified the type she required, she just assumed he would know. They have a big argument and both Dean and his tools end up in the water.
Losing his tools in the water is a big set back for Dean. They are not cheap to replace and he is quite understandably angry at her. For the loss of his tools, waste of time on an unpaid job, for her rudeness towards him and for being chucked overboard. She is one nasty piece of work and when the opportunity arrives to get his sweet revenge he grabs it with both hands.
His chance arrives when a local news station puts out a report of a young woman who was fished out of the sea. This woman being the very same woman who was so rude to him and cost him all his tools (she had fallen from the deck of the boat in the night whilst trying to retrieve a ring). The woman was reported to have amnesia and couldn’t remember who she was.
It's perfect for Dean. He can just feed her a few lies and have her cooking and cleaning for him in no time. Also, looking after his boys. Though she was out of order before, how can he do this it is so morally wrong? Although she has lost her memory she remains stuck up and rude. How will her new found life style affect her attitude to life and other people?
One of my favourite parts of the film is after Joanna/Annie's long day of thoroughly cleaning up the house and jobs Dean left her. The boys come back to find her staring blankly into the distance and going "bur-bur-bur-b-b-bur-bur". There must have been a ton of stuff to do. They then revive her by dumping her into a barrel of ice cold water outside.
There is a really satisfying part in the film when Annie puts a teacher in her place by correcting her on something. I love the end lines too. Obviously I won't say what they are. I'll just say that it is touching.
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn being a couple of screen, have great on screen chemistry. They work really well together. Goldie is really good as the rich stuck up bitch in the beginning. I bet that was a really fun role to play.
In this film you will find lots of laughs and a heart-warming tale. Catalina, the title of my op is the name of a woman in another heart-warming tale, which is told by Dean in the film. You'll find out more if you watch it.
I think the main message this film is trying to convey is that no matter how much money you have, it doesn't guarantee you happiness. Only love even in poverty can bring true happiness. I think we all know that really. No matter how much I long to win the lottery, I know it doesn't matter that I don't have a lot of money because I am happy and in love with my husband James and have a wonderful loving family. Sorry if I'm being too sickly for some of you it's just how I feel.

Advantages: Enjoyable cast, funny situations, and certain charm not noticed in other comtemporary comedies Disadvantages: Plot does have its share of contriviances and predictability
...As for me, I found OVERBOARD a delight to watch. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a pampered rich bitch who owns a yacht with her husband (a sleazy Edward Herrmann). When they pull into a dump of a town called Elk Cove, Oregon, she decides that she wants to remodel her closet out of sheer boredom, and hires the service of randy, beer-drinking carpenter Dean Profitt (Kurt Russell, her real life boyfriend). When her perfect opinion of the project ... ...experiance, lol), he gets pushed overboard with no money and loses all his tools. Being broke and having four unruly boys is too much for Russell, but when he discovers that Hawn had capsized the previous night and ended up with amnesia in the local hospital, he gets the most brilliant idea to get his revenge, though also teach the Rich & Snobbish in general a lesson, by going to the hospital and claiming Hawn as his second wife!!!
The film is great ...

Advantages: Good cast, good story-line, amusing, some lol moments, great music Disadvantages: Perhaps a little dated now
I have seen overboard many times and find that, although it is somewhat dated now, I still thoroughly enjoy it. There are many laugh out loud moments and it has a great cast. One of Hollywood's original glamorous couples Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell star. In their prime, and still today for me, they provide the eye candy for female and male viewers.

RECOMMENDED
Overboard is in many ways a classic chick flick. However my Hubby enjoys this film and I feel it would appeal to many different people. I guess this was filmed when the Russell / Hawn relationship was at its height as the on screen chemistry is plain for all to see.
If you like your romantic comedies to have a little substance and good solid performances I would say this may be the perfect film for you.

...a FILM-ONLY review
--------------------------------------
Overboard is a golden oldie with a not so olden Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell teaming up for a very funny romantic comedy. It's sweet (albeit with rather a cruel streak!), has engaging performances by long-time partners Hawn and Rusell, and even manages to throw in a worthwhile observation about class distinctions. Joanna Stayton (Hawn) has been raised by mother Edith Mintz (Katherine Helmond) ... ...Later Joanna falls overboard (thus the title) and is struck with amnesia. When her own husband views this as a good opportunity to make a break fro freedom, Proffitt senses the opportunity for revenge - a nasty, slow torture revenge involving looking after his four children. After a while Joanna begins to understand who she was (according to Proffitt): "I'm a short, fat slut. ". But, of course, after a time the two start to become strangely attracted ...

Going Overboard may well be the worst film ever to go through the tills at Woolworths, including even all films they have sold that star Madonna. One marvels at the fact that anyone involved in this production ever worked in showbusiness again afterwards, let alone went on to become successful movie stars.
I would like to remind readers again that I only watched the first eight minutes so some might argue that I am not properly qualified to write this review. But what I saw will stay with me forever. Advantages: A magical disk of a sedative Disadvantages: Erm...too many to bother listing
Going overboard. Well...what can we say about this movie that doesn't make it seem like I'm resentful of actually watching this eclectic diorrhea. However I will start with the advantage of this movie (yes THE, as in one, a single advantage).
I suffer from insomnia, so this movie was helpful to me, it sent me to sleep whilst wathcing it, not once, not twice, but three times, on seperate nights. Yes it's a sleeping cure, it helps people sleep, finally, the erm...geniuses (erm...ok...thats so polite for brain dead morons) have developed something that helps people nod off.
The movie...well thats impossible, to actually describe too well (I kept falling to sleep)...the story from what I gathered (trust me, there wasn't much to it). Some guy on a boat wants to be the ships comedian so he can get laid. Yes it really is that simple ...
A woman who has it all; money, power and looks, falls overboard from her private yacht. The carpenter that she employed to build a new wardrobe takes his revenge when she is found naked and suffering with amnesia. Claiming to be her husband he takes her home and puts her to work in the kitchen.

DVD Description
In Garry Marshall's comedy, Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) is an obnoxious, wealthy woman, who becomes afflicted with amnesia after she slips off her yacht. Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell) is the gruff, blue-collar woodworker who recently had a nasty run-in with Joanna. Dean spots the memory-free lass on television, and in an act of vengeance, "comes forward" to declare her as his wife. Soon the once-pampered Joanna is performing housework and caring for Dean's four uncouth boys. The two eventually fall in love with each other, but when Joanna's real husband shows up (and makes her aware of her riches), whom will she choose
