...myself. My opinion on Out of Sight caused me considerable dismay though so I figured it was high time to update it, especially as it received exactly no reads the first time… so here it is.
Out of Sight is a fantastic film that combines all the essential elements of quality filmmaking, razor sharp script, an immeasurably talented director and two stars that are at their dazzling best. The script is courtesy of Elmore Leonard who is proving ... ...that revived the unconventional idea; Out of Sight uses it intelligently and to great effect, filling in the blanks without confusing the audience. The opening scene sees Clooney, who plays bank robber Jack Foley, in a decidedly irritable mood as he removes a tie and throws it dramatically to the floor. He looks up to see the enticing prospect of a SunTrust Bank and after a brief examination proceeds to rob it in a method that can only be described ...

Like all Leonard's stuff, Out of Sight is character-driven, and the characters are pips. Jack Foley (George Clooney) is a twinkling-eyed habitual criminal who virtually talks bank tellers out of their money; we see him at work in a deft, impeccably cut prologue the book didn't bother with but Scott Frank's screenplay is well-advised to include. Nabbed minutes later, Foley is tossed into a Florida pen, out of which he almost immediately breaks by ... ...(Jennifer Lopez) just happens to be standing at the other end (don't worry, it makes perfect sense), and in a meet-cute worthy of Hollywood's golden age, she and Jack soon find themselves spooned in the trunk of his getaway car discussing their favorite movies. Of course, they wouldn't be if Karen had any room to draw her hideout gun. By the time she gets the chance, she has distinctly mixed feelings about putting Jack away.
That delicious indecision ...

...of them. Watch to find out how it will all end.
Watch as the criminal who is trying to make one last heist, struggles as he is faced with temptation, in the form of a Federal Marshal. Jack Foley has the help of his friend Buddy, who he is planning on making the heist with, as well as a few other people, but Buddy is his only ally for the heist. The movie does not focus all the attention on the robbery, the crimes and the criminals as much as most ... ...struggle to do their job due to their attraction to one another. You do get to see the robbery, and the planning part of the robbery and all the criminals are introduced and you get to see how they all met, but the main focus of the movie I found, was that it focused on Clooney and Lopez's characters to see how they would behave around each other and whether they would be able to do their jobs without letting the other get in the way.

Out of Sight Review ofOut Of Sight DVDby

Advantages: A storyline good enough for these stars Disadvantages: ?
George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez star in this fine crime/romance flick.
This film definately falls into the DO NOT MISS category. It is extremely good. Of course, the two stars are bound to cause a fair few lads, and a fair few lasses to go just to see the stars on show. Both do not dissapoint, and you should find them to be most pleasing on the eye.
HOwever, dont think that this film is therefore lacking in the story line department. It is not. ... ...is some nice action, and a law or too broken for those who like that. There is certainly am excellent romantic match up. There is loyalty, betrayal...this film has it all.
Let me make this simple. If you have not seen this film before, take my word for it - watch it! If you have seen it before then you know you would enjopy watching it again. ...

...friend helps him to break out of jail. In the process, he kidnaps a US Marshall, Karen, played by Jennifer Lopez. When the two robbers plan to pull off one last major job, Karen is part of the team that is supposed to stop them. However, the attraction between her and Foley make it harder for her to do her job and she hesitates over whether to catch him or to let him get away. The plot was very unoriginal but the film is alright, mainly due to the ...

Advantages: Good transfer and sound Disadvantages: Dull extra, mediocre film
...this I just had the feeling that this would have worked so much better if the two leads were actually of a similar age and could stir up more sexual heat. For a better example of how to do this kind of material right you really need to look at the likes of the Clooney/Lopez potboiler Out of Sight.
As for the dvd, well the R2 cover lists this as a special edition. Well if there's something special about it then I'm still looking.
The anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer is very good. It's a clean print with no real signs of grain, blemish etc. Some of the scenes looked a little soft to me but then this could be how they looked originally on theatrical release. Overall a nice job.
The same could be said for the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. It's very nice and lively throughout. One of the things that really struck me was how good Christopher Young...

...-warmingly funny scenes. Once they get a photographer and agree how the poses should be done, including tastefully posing as if they are doing WI crafts! they are in business. Could it all get out of hand though when they start shooting to success? There is all sorts of media interest and the calendar starts selling out. Could all this success drive a wedge between the two friends as the original idea of raising funds goes out of sight?
Watch this to see the conclusion. This film really is a remarkable tale of the struggles of overcoming grief and the determination of a group of feisty & inspiring women.
If you purchase this on DVD it includes interview with the real women of this true story.
I hope you have enjoyed the review and will consider watching Calendar Girls....

Advantages: Good film Disadvantages: Dull commentaries
...links should be working any time now. However for me a really good DVD should have excellent commentaries and fun behind-the-scenes footage: my comparison points are always Ghostbusters and Out of Sight. David O. Russell just lacks the charm of Steven Soderburg, so his commentary is a little tedious.
By all means buy this disk, you could learn a fair bit about filmmaking from it, but expect only to enjoy the film not the dull commentary....

Based on Elmore Leonard's famous crime novel, OUT OF SIGHT finds director Steven Soderbergh back in Hollywood after a brief return to the independent world with SCHIZOPOLIS and GRAY'S ANATOMY. A funny, hip, and vibrant action-drama, OUT OF SIGHT tells the story of the unlikely relationship that forms between an FBI agent and a career criminal. After Jack Foley (George Clooney) escapes from jail with the help of his partner, Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames), he takes Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez), a sexy federal agent, hostage. Immediately sparks fly between the two. Eventually they let her go and leave Miami behind, heading directly for Detroit, where they plan to rob a former cellmate of theirs, a wealthy, white-collar criminal (Albert Brooks). When Karen finally locates Foley, a passionate encounter unfurls (edited ingeniously by Anne V. Coates, recalling Nicolas Roeg's classic DON'T LOOK NOW). As Foley zeroes in on his target, Karen must decide which side she's on. Soderbergh's film is a raucous ride through the criminal underworld, featuring spot-on performances by Clooney and Lopez. It's the supporting cast that makes OUT OF SIGHT so unforgettable, however; Rhames, Steve Zahn, Luis Guzman, and especially Don Cheadle deliver hysterical turns that keep the laughs coming as the tension continues to mount.
