Akerfeldt's mix of death metal growls and clean vocals is just unreal, he isn't the first to do this but he is for sure the best at it.

Opeth's first live DVD release is one that every music lover should own. First of all, if you don't know who Opeth is you need to go to your local record store and buy their stuff ASAP! Akerfeldt's mix of death metal growls and clean vocals is just unreal, he isn't the first to do this but he is for sure the best at it.
There are 2 sets played on this disc and they show the 2 different sides of Opeth. The first set is Opeth playing "Damnation" in its entirety with the addition of the song "Harvest" off of Blackwater Park album. This set shows the more mellow/classic rock side Opeth. All of the songs are very mellow, dark, and haunting. Yet at the same time they are all very melodic and beautiful. My personal favorite is probably "Closure", mainly because I just really like the guitar riffs in that song, but honestly I love ever song on this set.
The second set shows the real side of Opeth, the heavy side. The 1st song "Leper Affinity" is the opening track from "Blackwater Park" and is also a great opening song for a set. The 2nd song "Master's Apprentice" kicks off with a super heavy awesome riff accompanied by some intense vocals/lyrics; this song will make you want to break something it is so awesome. The 3rd song "Deliverance" is the title track off the same album. Mindblowing song that shows how dynamic Opeth can be, going from super heavy to super mellow with death growls and clean vocals throughout. The ending to this song is incredible, really cool syncopated heavy riff. The 4th song "Drapery Falls" is another one off of "Blackwater Park" and is probably one of my favorite songs period. This song has some great dissonant chord progressions, very melodic/catchy verse/chorus, and lots of great heavy/death metal parts with one good slow breakdown. The last song "A Fair Judgment" is another Opeth classic with a great melodic mellow intro. Honestly I have never been a huge fan of the outro to this song, it is good but just doesn't compare to the other stuff Opeth has done. Nonetheless I love every single second of this DVD and have watched it multiple times!! Plus there are some extras on the disc of the making of "Damnation" and "Deliverance", the two CD's they released around the same time that this DVD is based off of.
Again, if you don't know anything about Opeth, go buy some of their stuff right now!! Most of their songs are over 10 minutes long but you can't even tell because they are so progressive and awesome! The songs on the first set are normal length (3-5 mins). Opeth rules...look for a new CD in 2008 and tour to follow!!
Advantages: More original than TOOL? Disadvantages: none
Any OPETH Fan who does not own this dvd needs a serious talking to. And if you don't know much about OPETH, well this is an amazing dvd to get started with.
Opeth's style of music is unique, and it is hard to categorise them into any musical genre. I mean how would you describe TOOL without commenting on their originality. OPETH, however, take classic rock & metal and stamp their own mark on it in a big way, they arer indeed the most original and ... ...Anyway, this dvd is a live performance from the shepherd's bush empire concert in 2003. They played two very different sets and so the concert is split into two halves. The first half concentrates on the album damnation album, including the track harvest from the blackwater park album. This whole first section is very melancholic and haunting. However, during the second half, they focus on the more heavier songs from the albums deliverance and blackwater ...
