BACKGROUND ABOUT THE BAND *************************************** Opeth is a Swedish band, playing together for 10+ years. Their roots lay clearly within the death/doom genre, but they write songs with actual melodies. OPETH’s music has become so much more, and dare I say it--truly unique. Over the years, OPETH has garnered quite a large following (by underground standards) due to the critical and financial success of their albums BLACKWATER PARK, MORNINGRISE, DELIVERANCE, and DAMNATION, which in turn ensured that their concert appearances usually sell out. They have released 7 albums so far: Orchid, Morning Rise, My arms your hearse, Still life, Blackwater Park, Delivrance and Damnation. The band was co-founded by guitarist/vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt who eventually recruited second guitarist Peter Lindgren, drummer Martin Lopez (ex-AMON AMARTH), and bassist Martin Mendez. The musical ability of Mikael Akerfeldt and company have earned OPETH the Swedish equivalent of a Grammy award. OPETH have come a long way since their inception in the early 1990’s. They have progressed both creatively and professionally with each album, and have forged a sound that is unlike any other band. Akerfelt, Lindgren, Lopez, and Mendez have broken through the limited musical barrier of their Death Metal roots.
WHAT'S ON THE DVD? ***************************** The DVD is actually athe concert they played in October 2003 in the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. The gig is divided into 2 parts: the first one is quiet, and is basiclly the whole album Damnation (2003). The 2nd part covers most of their classics, picked from the previous albums; this part is more extreme… Tracklisting: · Window Pane · In My Time of Need · Death Whispered A Lullabye · Closure · Hope Leaves · To Rid the Disease · Ending Credits · Harvest · Weakness · Master’s Apprentice · The Drapery Falls · Deliverance · The Leper Affirmation · A Fair Judgment
The multi-camera setup captures the show on film, which perfectly recreates the concert on your TV screen with clarity and precision. The OPETH stageshow is mired in dreary colors which bolsters the atmospheric musical compositions. This transfer exhibits deep backs and gray hues that that are perfectly calibrated
MENUS ********** The menus contained on this disc are inspired by the artwork from Damnation. All of the menus – well, both menus as there are only two – are beautifully presented with motion and sound. Navigation couldn't be easier, as the audio options are offered up on the main menu. The only sub-menu provides access to the individual songs with a simple text listing.
EXTRAS AND BONUSES ***************************** The DVD comes with only one making of Delivrance and Damnation albums, which details Opeth in the studio recording the music for those two highly acclaimed albums. In between these studio sessions, the band members discuss the history of the band including line-up changes, label changes, and other musical hurdles that Mikael and co. have overcome.
SOUND / VISUAL OPTIONS ******************************** Shot in hi-definition, the show is presented here in 1.78:1 widescreen and is filled with bright spotlights and contrasting stark shadows.
The audio is where this disc shines. Opeth is a band of great diversity and talent. Their songs range from some of the most beautiful melodies ever played through to hardcore death metal. Both the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 tracks do the music justice.
PRICE ********** £12.99 delivered on www.play.com. You can probably get it for about a tenner.
MY OPINION **************** I think this is a great DVD. I think it is a bit on the low side when it comes to extra, but the concert is fantastic. Even if you are not into death metal thing, you can get it, because you have at least one hour of fantastic balads songs. If you are into metal, I think this is a must have. The melodies are eerie haunting. And when it comes to violence, Opeth is really great.
WHO IS IT FOR? ********************* Opeth fans obviously, people opened to deifferent music styles, people who love "Nothing else Matters" (Metallica) like songs.
WHO ISN'T IT FOR? ************************ Your washing machine, your cat, your lawyer.
Advantages: you get to see Opeth live! Great sound quality, camera angles Disadvantages: Leaves you wanting more!!
Opeth's first live DVD release is one that every music lover should own. First of all, if you don't know who Opeth is you need to go to your local record store and buy their stuff ASAP! They are true originals with amazing talents. Their songwriting is a some of the best ever and they play with great technical proficiency. Akerfeldt's mix of death metal growls and clean vocals is just unreal, he isn't the first to do this but he is for sure the best at it.
There are 2 sets played on this disc and they show the 2 different sides of Opeth. The first set is Opeth playing "Damnation" in its entirety with the addition of the song "Harvest" off of Blackwater Park album. This set shows the more mellow/classic rock side Opeth. All of the songs are very mellow, dark, and haunting. Yet at the same time they are all very melodic ...
Advantages: More original than TOOL? Disadvantages: none
Any OPETH Fan who does not own this dvd needs a serious talking to. And if you don't know much about OPETH, well this is an amazing dvd to get started with.
Opeth's style of music is unique, and it is hard to categorise them into any musical genre. I mean how would you describe TOOL without commenting on their originality. OPETH, however, take classic rock & metal and stamp their own mark on it in a big way, they arer indeed the most original and awe inspriring band I have ever come across.
Anyway, this dvd is a live performance from the shepherd's bush empire concert in 2003. They played two very different sets and so the concert is split into two halves. The first half concentrates on the album damnation album, including the track harvest from the blackwater park album. This whole first section is very melancholic ...
