DVD Description

Cary Grant and Tony Curtis star as naval officers in this service comedy, one of the director's favorite genres. When Adm. Matt Sherman's (Grant) submarine, the Sea Tiger, is damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he needs to find spare parts to have it recommissioned. Into the breach steps aide Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), a master con man and wheeler-dealer who begins scheming to acquire the materials needed to fix the sub while the appalled Sherman looks the other way. Once the sub is deemed seaworthy, they stop at an island where Holden picks up a couple of Filipino families and five navy nurses who have been stranded there. The arrival of the extremely attractive nurses in the sub's cramped quarters has the predicted effect on the young, all-male crew, who soon find concentrating on their work to be an impossible task. The women also have their own ideas about the renovation of the submarine, one of which involves painting it pink. Despite the dated 1950s gender stereotypes, the comic genius of Grant and the energy of Curtis, in addition to a script witty enough to have been nominated for an Academy Award, keep the film afloat. Among the talented cast are Dick Sargent, Arthur O'Connell, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, and Gavin McLeod, who would later return to the seas as the captain of THE LOVE BOAT.

Even tomboys can fall in love
Review of Calamity Jane DVD by Glorificus1

Advantages: Doris Day
Disadvantages: Doris Day has a fat bottom

...there are a few hiccups along the way… ‘This town ain't big enough! Not for me and that frilled-up, flirtin', man-rustlin' petticoat, it ain't!’ declares Calamity, as she realizes Danny will never be hers. This enjoyable bubblegum romp can be enjoyed no matter how many times you’ve seen it before, maybe not one of the most politically correct films, but certainly one of the sunniest. Keel does everything he did in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (1954, Stanley Donen) and then some. Day once again proves that although she may not be a classically trained actress, she sure can entertain.... Read review

Worse Than Bad
Review of Ancient Evil: Scream of the Mummy by christopherj84

Advantages: its only 85 minutes
Disadvantages: its really really bad

..., you have got used to the music so it has zero effect on you. The set is incredibly small, the college campus is more like a medium to large house. The college 'dorm' is really just a room. I thought they would be bigger or at least have enough beds for the four occupants. However, the ridiculously slow speed of the Mummy means if the set had been any bigger, the film would last for hours, and that is really bad. The special effects are poor, very poor. They had obviously decided to keep the rating low by having only one piece of gore. A slightly bloody face! They then realised the film was a bit lame so filled it with swearing to boost the rating to 15. My DVD version says; Violence - frequent, strong. Perhaps the censors couldn't be put up with the inconvenience of watching it all and made it up, but there was no violence on screen... Read review

and Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Wide Screen) by MHam

Advantages: great film
Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste

...a, touch me is the one that made the channel 4 poll and Rocky (Peter Hinwood who now runs an antique shop in the uk) – gets to do just that, but as Janet does spend almost the entire movie wandering around in bra and petticoat the scenes are very mild. Richard O Brien created the show and plays Riff Raff the butler, he gives the film its most well known song – go on sing along you know you want to ….. Lets do the time warp again. (A word of advise don’t do the timewarp stood next to someone wearing stilettos who is too drunk to know left from right as when they jump on your foot – it hurts!) Brad is played by Barry Bostock who was also the mayor in Spin City. Meatloaf makes an appearance and sings a song and there is even a cameo roll for Christopher Biggins. So whilst this film is quite watchable with a couple of friends and a bottle... Read review
