Advantages: Realism! Disadvantages: I was shocked, in a bad way ...
...and what do you get? Open Water, a nice small diamond, not many carats, just a small one really but still a diamond!
The plot is as follows: A couple, Susan (played by Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (played by Daniel Travis) decides to go on vacation on this exotic gorgeous island full of activities so they can relax and escape the work stress and the city life. One of the days that they were on the island, they decide to participate in a group dive ... ...boat and sail towards the open sea. Purpose of the dive is to explore and get awed by the magnificent rich underwater world. Susan and Daniel wonder off from the group following some fancy fish. They wonder of for about 30 minutes. In the meanwhile, the rest of the group is on the boat. One of the men organising the diving starts counting the people. I’ll tell you something …I’ll never trust the |||| |||| system ever again! Advantages: Acting was simply phenomenal Disadvantages: Pacing, the ending.
Open Water was a pretty interesting and very unconventional suspense film just released. It has its share of logical consistency and bad acting but the movie manages to grip you by the hand and take you on a very intriguing ride created by Chris Kentis.
Hard to believe this is his second feature film, he really has started to mold his craft, apart from his first film "Grind" a largely ignored movie by movie critics.
I noticed when reading the other ... ...a helluva movie, it is open for interpretation to what happens to our hopeless victims. I did for the long ride bought the director's interpretation; he firmly gives a great portrait of this couple. They were kind and thoughtful and didn't deserve what happened. He also gives by the incredible acting by Mr. Travis and Ms. Ryan a tribute of sorts to the couple. They don't go down without a fight. They argue and fight about their situation, and regrettably ...

Advantages: original(ish), horrifying, very very real Disadvantages: short.. but longer would have less impact.
I've just finished watching this film.. all I can say is.. wow. This is one of the most truly horrifying and disquieting films I've ever seen. It probably is the only film that I have seen where at the end I've just sat there and thought 'I am So glad I watched that', and one of the only films that has left me speechless.
Apparently, this film is 'Blair Witch meets Jaws'. Not really.. it's not very much at all like either film, except it is sometimes ... ...it is in the sea. And has the occasional shark. This Is a film in its own right, not just a modified version of another, as the quote on the front of the DVD suggests.
The plot of this film, exceedingly simple as it is, involves two lovers going on 'vacation', going on a scuba diving trip, and being left behind. The rest of the film (which is most of it) is them waiting, hoping to be rescued, and fighting to survive.
The whole film seems so real.. ...

Advantages: Only 79 Minutes Disadvantages: Boring, Don't Believe The Hype, Annoying Characters, Crap Sharks
...Like Blair Witch before it, Open Water was a low budget movie snapped up in a seven-figure deal by a studio. Now I thought Blair Witch was a clever movie diluted by the time it reached UK shores with the hype that surrounded it. Open Water’s hook is that it features sharks and it’s low budget. Sadly the promise of a ‘Jaws meets Blair Witch’ as exclaimed in the advertising leaves the view feeling very cheated.
Susan and Daniel are a business couple ... ...minutes of my life on Open Water. Yes, sharks can be scary when they’re big and looming like Jaws or perhaps incredibly realistic when they’re thrashing about in Deep Blue Sea. However the sharks on show here although real are quite dull and not really threatening. Of course the budget of the movie wouldn’t allow for big animatronics etc but compared to Jaws where the shark is barely seen, everything just falls flat.
A lot of this has to do with ...

Advantages: erm - some lovely sunsets.... Disadvantages: its rubbish
...don't read this review!!)
Open Water is a film that…..
Well its sort of….
Ok – here is my opinion from the start- this film is rubbish. Now I don’t know if I missed the point or something but after sitting down with family and friends and watching it I was left with the heart wrenching feeling that I had just lost an hour and half of my life I am never going to get back. I feel quite angry about this as all the hype had lead me to believe that ... ...lover of sharks I was also interested to see how they filmed them.
The Plot
The film follows Daniel & Susan a highly stressed couple on a diving holiday that they both badly need. They arrive at the hotel, unpack and arrange to go diving the next morning – all fine so far if not a little tedious. There is a brief moment of female nudity at this point when Susan is lying on a bed stark naked claiming to be hot and then turns over and says she is ...

DVD Description
Proving that the power of imagination is much more terrifying than what meets the eye, OPEN WATER is Chris Kentis's intensely realistic deep-sea drama, based on true events. The film's leering digital video camera allows viewers to float like shark-bait, stranded in the middle of the ocean with Susan and Daniel (Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis), a bickering married couple who have just been abandoned by their scuba-diving boat in the Caribbean. As the tension escalates between the troubled twosome--who are cold, tired, dehydrated, and more than a little scared--the tragedy of the situation is exacerbated by a series of very unfortunate conditions. While a current sweeps them far from where the boat left them, and deep dark clouds pass menacingly overhead, the sea-life just below the surface is clearly not of the friendly variety. Yes, those are real sharks, folks. Meanwhile, Daniel, who watched Shark Week on television, is no stranger to the perils at hand, and finds himself battling shock. Minutes pass like hours, with the light shifting on the water and the constant motion of the waves adding to this unfathomable nightmare. The shimmering blues of wide expanses of sea are offset by dazzling underwater photography, yet the mood remains bleak. And while no special effects, abrupt developments, or abrasive gore are present here, the film instills such fear that viewers will be frozen awaiting the surprising conclusion. A day at the beach will never be quite the same again.
