contemporary sex farce about men who (to quote John Hiatt's song) let their little heads do the thinking. Not as polished asGrosse Pointe Blank, with which it shares a similar offbeat sensibility, it's a promising comedy that never quite hits full speed, coasting along amiably enough before spiralling into violence that clashes with its trashy sensibility. But it's fun enough, especially for those who drool at the sight of Liv Tyler. The movie begins by suggesting that Liv is sexy, then proceeds to prove it, and continually insists upon it until you're left with no choice but to agree wholeheartedly. As bombshell Jewell Valentine, Tyler lures three guys into her criminal scheme. Happy homemaking. Bartender Matt Dillon's the first to take the bait; as Dillon's lawyer cousin, Paul Reiser also can't resist; and when murder complicates everything, detective John Goodman employs his own love-struck brand of chivalry. Sporting a tacky pompadour, Michael Douglas steals the show as a hit man hired to whack the scheming sexpot--and Andrew Dice Clay is surprisingly funny in a dangerous dual role--but of course Liv can hold her own. It's all quite amusing, but rarely isMcCool'sas funny as you hope it will be; the dialogue by Stan Seidel (who sadly died before filming completed) is zesty enough but lacks the Coen-esque punch that would kick it over the top. It hardly matters, though; with afemme fatalesuch as Liv in control, the movie's faults will easily be forgiven. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

...So when I saw one night at McCools down at the video store, I remembered reading a couple of favourable reviews a while back and I had to rent it.
For another thing, it boasts stars aplenty, being Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, John Goodman, Paul Reiser (you might not know the name but you'll recognise the face), and Liv Tyler.

However, for me there were hardly any other comedy moments in the film. I watched it with a mate, and we both agreed that it was not very funny.
The noir aspect didn't work too well either. The 'comedy' and essential 'lightness' of the film took away from the suspense and darkness.

I've always enjoyed film noir - cynicism, darkness, deceit, an essential belief in the badness of the human race, and all done with a great sense of style. I've also always enjoyed comedy - cynicism, darkness, deceit, an essential belief in the badness of the human race, and all done with a great sense of humour. The concept of putting both together I found intriguing and right up my street. So when I saw one night at McCools down at the video store, I remembered reading a couple of favourable reviews a while back and I had to rent it.
For another thing, it boasts stars aplenty, being Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, John Goodman, Paul Reiser (you might not know the name but you'll recognise the face), and Liv Tyler.
Matt Dillon plays Randy, a bartender working at McCools, who lives in a ramshackle house left to him by his mother. One night after finishing work he encounters Jewel (Liv Tyler) having a very nasty row with her boyfriend. Being a nice guy, and Jewel being rather on the gorgeous side, he takes her home where they proceed to have incredible sex. Only it turns out that Jewel and her boyfriend have plotted the whole thing in order to rob his house. However, Jules takes a shine to Randy. Her boyfriend then bursts in and demands that Randy take him back to McCools to empty the safe. While he is doing this, Jewel shoots said boyfriend and kills him dead.
Enter John Goodman as Detective Dehling, the cop on the case. He is suspicious of Randy (who claims the boyfriend shot himself in a bizarre twisting movement), and totally enamoured of Jewel who reminds him of his dead wife.
The story is told in flashback from different perspectives. Randy tells the story to Michael Douglas, a hit-man Randy is hiring to bump off Jewel (reason why later).
Meanwhile, we also learn the story of Carl (Reiser), Randy's cousin who was at the bar that night and fell head over heels when Jewel walked into the bar. This story is told to a psychologist.
Detective Dahling's story comes to light through his tortured love-struck conversations with a priest.
With me so far? Then let's go on…
It turns out that all along Jewel has a plan of her own, which is to steal from as many men as possible. Not only does she move in with Randy, but she also has an affair with his cousin, Carl, and with Detective Dehling.
I loved this multi-perspective aspect of the film. It moved from story to story and from past to present throughout. This enabled us to see multiple versions of Jewel and the different ways in which she had ensnared and manipulated each lover.
Towards the end, we end up with all the men coming face-to-face in the home that Jewel has taken from Randy and made her own. Here is the best comedy moment of the movie, and one I won't forget for some time.
However, for me there were hardly any other comedy moments in the film. I watched it with a mate, and we both agreed that it was not very funny.
The noir aspect didn't work too well either. The 'comedy' and essential 'lightness' of the film took away from the suspense and darkness.
What you end up with is a strange hybrid of a movie that doesn't work properly on any level.
Having said that, the script is very sharp and there are some lovely acidic moments (particularly coming from Carl in his conversation with his shrink).
And praise must go to the actors, all of whom put in excellent performances. Liv Tyler veritably undulates and steams as Jewel, Paul Reiser is a wonderful self-deluded creep, and Michael Douglas (with the worst bouffant hairdo perpetrated on screen since the 1950s) is terrific as the cynical, hard-boiled hitman.
Directed deftly by Harald Zwart (although a bit too cleverly at times), One Night at McCools is a mediocre film that could have been so much more if it had decided which basket (comedy or noir) to throw the majority of its eggs in. By throwing half in each, it's a rather soggy omelette.
Worth seeing for the performances and, if you're a straight man or gay woman, for Liv Tyler smouldering away in several states of frilly undress.
Advantages: good cast, Liv Tyler - SEX on legs! Classy comedy Disadvantages: slow in parts
...a Bar called ‘McCools’ where one night (hence the title) - enter gorgeous Jewel (Liv). Matt Dillon plays the barman, Randy (how apt?) who instantly falls for Liv’s obvious charms. He can’t believe his luck when she tells him her ‘sob story’ and asks to go back to his place for the night. But it gets even better than that for him as when asked her favourite thing, she replies quite bluntly “Fu**ing!” ... ...at having got away in one piece and....BOSH !!! Unexpected and a great ending to the film.
Overall this film could have been funnier, but I’m not sure that Director Harold Zwart was aiming at recreating a ‘Something about Mary’ or ‘American Pie’. The film is sexy, at times outrageous, subtle and cleverly done, but the slow parts are forgotten when you leave the cinema because you’ve just sat through the final ...

Advantages: Great acting and superb final act that'll have you in stitches Disadvantages: Doesn't feel right as you watch it
I hadn't really heard anything of this film and went in to the cinema reasonably blind (which i always prefer, plots are spoiled too early these days) so it was nice to sit through a particularly funny if not strange comedy.
It all starts with Randy (Matt Dillon) bumping into Jewel (Liv Tyler), they get it together and carry on a rather unusual lifestyle (she'll do anything to get the dream house she's always wanted, even kill!), meanwhile Carl ... ...the local copper (John Goodman) and they are both obsessed by her.
The first half of the film see's the three men recounting events from the fateful first meeting betwwen Jewel and Randy. Randy is telling Michael Doughlas, as to who he is, you'll have to find out, at a bingo joint out in the middle of no-where. Carl is telling it to a therapist and John Goodman is tlking to a priest.
This telling of events (which occasionally overlaps) is a decent ...

One of Randy’s relatives Carl, performed by Paul Reiser (Beverley Hills Cop 1984), a Lawyer also falls head over heels and uses any excuse to see her even if it does involve whips and leather. What is distinct though is that she is a Sex bomb with a yearning for settling into her perfect house even if it means murder and burglary is inevitable to get this. Randy is soon ruined as he is thrown out of his house and hires contract killer Mr Burmeister, acted by Michael Douglas (Traffic 2000), to kill Jewel.
This was a great comical film, with lashings of sexuality. Liv Tyler is stunning in the role and uses ...

beautiful but a-ha's is the most famous as it featured in the excellent movie OneNight at McCool's which starred Liv Tyler. The video for it caused some controversy, and can be found in the special features of both this DVD and the movie. The movie was originally made with a different ending that had Velvet playing over it, which can be found on the movie DVD.
Velvet is a masterpiece, and the live version is brilliant. I was disappointed that they did not play it when I saw them live more recently. Morten introduces it in English, and Magne walks over. "Say it in Norwegian," he points out, in Norwegian. (the Subtitles definitely help here.) Morten obliges. According to the subtitles, "hvelvet" means "capsized". :-)
Morten's voice is again backed up with Anneli singing the female part. Again not a bum note in sight!

DVD Description
The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outre toupee. His story of how Jewel lead him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, and Detective Dehling talking with a priest; each telling their own stories of obsession with Jewel. Tyler is clearly beautiful, but it's the evil, scheming side of her character--delivered with voluptuous softness and irresistible badness--that makes the men's actions, however ridiculous they become, feel completely believable. Dillon, Goodman, and Reiser are all type cast in their familiar personas, but the story moves quickly, the dialogue doesn't have that forced sitcom feel, and a running gag involving a wooden Indian builds to an amusing pay-off.
