In one of the most memorable indictments of mental institutions, and a subtle examination of male anger, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (based on the novel by Ken Kesey) presents...
more...a biting, and ultimately tragic, satire. R.P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson, in a role it would seem he was born to play), a misbehaving con who shirks authority, finds himself in an asylum after faking insanity to get out of work detail in prison. Once in, the vivacious troublemaker finds out he's in a worse kind of prison--one presided over by the repressed, terrifyingly quiet Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), whose taught set of rules and regulations are meant to suppress patients' psychotic outbursts, and their spirits. It's not long before McMurphy is reaching out to his new inmates, trying desperately to bring life to an otherwise dead atmosphere. He becomes the organizer of card games, tries to teach a huge Cree Indian, Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), to shoot baskets, and, when his efforts to allow the patients to see the World Series are thwarted, he mimics the game for his new friends. To Ratched, however, Nicholson's free spirit is as dangerous as a schizophrenic impulse.

A disturbing, witty, and electrifying drama, and directed by Milos Forman (AMADEUS, THE PEOPLE VS LARRY FLYNT), ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST is brilliantly acted by an ensemble that includes several future stars such as Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito. The film is also one of only three films—along with IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS—that won all five of the top Oscars; Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Fletcher), Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Full review
Having been a medical assistant in many hospitals a few years, I can tell you that is one of the first films that depicts what it's like to be in a state hospital. Even though the movie is over 20yrs old, it has still me thinking about the patients in these hospitals.

Directed by Milos Forman ,One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is about an ex-convict named
Randall McMurphy, played excellently by Jack Nicholson who fakes insanity to get into a hospital to avoid trouble from the law.

Little does McMurphy know that this hospital will more trouble for him than the prison he was in.

When McMurphy is brought in he meets all the patients in the ward which include Mr; Martini played by Danny Devito (in his film debut) ,Christopher Lloyd who plays Taber (also in his film debut), Billy Bibbit the stutterer played well by Brad Douriff.

McMurphy thinks life is going to be swell in the ward but when he sees everything the patients have to go, including obeying the rules, not watching the World Series, drinking medication, and being told what to do day in day out, he starts to cause trouble.

The hospital is partially run by Mildred Ratched who is the head nurse, and who plays the villain of sorts in the movie.

When McMurphy is fed up with the rules and verbal abuse of Miss Ratched he decides to take matters into his own hands and decides
to take the patients out of the ward and
experience things in life, they haven't
experience before.

I don't know if I want to reveal anymore because there are many people who haven't seen this picture in year especially on the dvd which
reveals a ton of info on the movie..

I myself haven't seen it for over 10 yrs until I saw it on DVD.

But I will mention things on the DVD that are not on the VHS that will definitely get you're attention.

The DVD provides a complete history of the film including how it won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The DVD also has biographies of the cast and crew which include Jack Nicholson Louise Fletcher, Michael Douglas (who coproduced the film). Milos Forman , Danny Devito, Scatman Crothers who is best remembered as Louie from the "Chico and The Man " show with Freddie Prince in the 1970's. Of course
you can't have a DVD without commentary
and that's included as well.

This is just a superb film that is very important if you want to study filmaking, but on top of that it takes you inside these hospitals and shows you things you wouldn't see if you visited these hospitals on an ordinary day.

And how those Academy Award nominated
performances from Nicholson (Easy Rider,
As Good as it Gets). Louise Fletcher, Danny
Devito (whose career has been one mental
patient after another) and of course that big
tall Indian William Sampson who gives a good
performance as Chief Bromden. the mute
mental patient who gives that memorable ending.

A must see.
