One Fine Day is a romantic comedy released in 20th December 1996. It was a relative disappointment at the box office and mainly received negative reviews from the critics. The film is rated PG and runs for approximately 108 minutes.

One Fine Day is directed by Michael Hoffman volume of work is very limited. His films include: Restoration, A Midsummer Night’s Dream & The Emperor’s Club.

George Clooney was probably at the height of his ‘sex symbol’ image when this was released, I’m not really into older men but I do see the appeal with him! He’s starred in films such as: Oceans 11, The Good German & Michael Clayton.

Michelle Pfeiffer plays George Clooney’s love interest in the film, she’s about on par with him when it comes to being an acclaimed actor. She’s appeared in: Dangerous Minds, Dangerous Liaisons & What Lies Beneath.

One Fine Day is about a stressful day where busy parents find out that their kids can’t go to school so they frantically try to find someone to look after their kids. Melanie Parker (Pfeiffer) is an architect with a very busy life, she has no time for romance since she split up with her husband. She has a young son to look after and fit around her job, she’s a control freak but doesn’t let it show. Jack Taylor, split with his wife & now sees his Daughter occasionally when he can, he’s a reporter for a big newspaper so also has a busy life. Despite his good job he’s still got the mental age of a 10 year old (haven’t all men?!) and finds it hard accepting his responsibilities.

When he’s forced to take care of his Daughter for the day he panics because he’s got an important day at work, his Daughter is supposed to be going on a school trip but when they’re late she misses her boat so she’s stuck with her Dad for the day. Melanie is in the same position however she’s late because of Jack, he was told by his ex to ring Melanie to tell her she doesn’t have to take his Daughter to school. The two stressed parents reluctantly decide to help each other out. Jack will take care of the kids while Melanie does her presentation & Melanie will do the same for Jack so he can interview a client. The two parents get off to a rocky start with Jack’s childlike attitude bugging Melanie but as the day goes on she warms to him and romance is on the cards for the two parents.

I first watched this by chance on Sky Movies, it was one of those films that they show in the early hours of the morning when they’ve got nothing better to show. That said, I didn’t have high hopes for this film, but because of who was in it I thought I would give it a chance, I’m also a big fan of rom-coms so it did have a couple of things going for it.

When this began I thought that I was right to be sceptical because it looked like one of those dull films that has no chemistry between the actors and was pretty much just made for the sake of it but as this progressed on my opinion changed and I began to enjoy it.

You shouldn’t watch this film expecting a lot as you’re not going to get an Oscar worthy film but it’s a nice, fluffy film to watch when you’re bored. This film of course is more aimed at women, I can’t imagine many me enjoying this unless of course they fancy Michelle Pfeiffer!

The acting isn’t exactly brilliant but the two leads have nice chemistry and make a cute couple, it’s their children who steal the show though, especially Melanie’s son Sammy who is absolutely adorable. Jack’s daughter Maggie is cute too especially the scene where she convinces her Dad to let her have a Kitten.

One Fine Day does have some funny moments and it’s quite a relatable film for a lot of people, especially parents with young children or people with stressful jobs. It’s a predictable film but that’s only to be expected as most rom-coms are pretty predictable aren’t they?

I would recommend this to any fan of rom-coms, don’t watch it expecting a film as good as Bridget Jones or Love Actually but it is a nice fluffy film that will entertain you for an hour and half when you’ve nothing to do.

The only special feature on this DVD is a theatrical trailer, this film is over 10 years old so that’s to be expected.

The DVD can be bought from play.com for £3.99 and for £3.99 you really can’t go wrong can you. This is a nice Sunday afternoon timer-filler.

The soundtrack is also available from play.com for £11.99 and includes:
One Fine Day (Natalie Merchant)
The Boy From New York City (The Ad Libs)
For The First Time (Kenny Loggins)
Mama Said (The Shirelles)
Someone Like You (Shawn Colvin)
Love's Funny That Way (Tina Arena)
Have I Told You Lately? (Van Morrison)
The Glory Of Love (Keb' Mo')
What A Difference A Day Makes (Tony Bennett)
Isn't It Romantic (Ella Fitzgerald)
This Guy's In Love With You (Harry Connick Jr.)
Just Like You (Keb' Mo')
One Fine Day (The Chiffons)
Suite From 'One Fine Day' (James Newton Howard)
