The film opens in the rain with the One Fine Day music playing. The camera focuses on an apartment building, looking through several windows at different people. Eventually it reaches and enters the apartment of Melanie and Sammy.
Melanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a very busy single mother who we see munching on a snack whilst she writes out checks to pay the bills. She makes Sammy's lunch for school, then goes to kiss her cute little son goodnight before retiring herself, or trying to anyway. There is an amusing situation with a toy police car and another with Sammy's arm. You can really feel her exhaustion.
Her son Sammy is all excited about his field trip at school the next day. The whole of his school are going on the Circle Line boat.
"I'm real excited about our field trip mommy. I love big boats." - Sammy
Children are so sweet and innocent. And this kid is super sweet. He is innocent and blissfully unaware of some things. Sammy's father is a musician who has little time for family. Or at least that is the excuse he uses. He and Melanie are separated and she covers for him though she hates doing so. The boy also has a soccer game in the evening the following day and asks if he'll be there. She says he'll try in hope that the father won't disappoint. How could anyone disappoint that cute little boy?
There is a touching moment when the boy asks his mother (referring the his daddy) - "Do you love him?" How can she answer without hurting her little boy’s feelings? "I will always love your father because he gave me you." Awwww. That makes all go all soppy. Both of them need love and attention.
The alarm clock on Melanie’s bedside table zooms round to 6:30 am. The next thing you see is Jack (George Clooney) waking up. Jack, another single parent has a very different approach to parenthood. His apartment is not very child friendly with scaffolding and building equipment strewn around. Not to say that he doesn’t care. He has great fun with his little daughter Maggie.
We have two portrayals here. A fun, but somewhat irresponsible parent and a sensible but busy one who could do with chilling out.
Maggie’s mother, Kristen drops off Maggie off for a week as she is off on her honeymoon with her new partner, having found Jack’s fun but childish behaviour unsuitable. Kristen reads out a list of numbers and things to do, one of which is important. Jack needs take Maggie to Kristen’s neighbours house (which turns out to be Melanie), so that she can give her a lift to school, or ring to cancel the lift. Well, you can guess what happens. It is the start of a nightmare day. The four of them meet at the school and realise their connection. The children are too late for the boat, meaning that they are stuck with the children. This is bad news for both of them as Jack is a busy news reporter working on a story and Melanie has a very important presentation to make for some important clients.
Neither Jack nor Melanie can find suitable childcare so they resort to helping each other out. It is a day of many ups and downs. That’s all that I’m going to tell you about the story. I’ll let you find out the rest.
I have watched this film many times and will definitely watch it many more. The music is a bonus. I own both the film and the soundtrack and recommend both. Plus if you’re a George Clooney fan, his sexy appearance, playful character and sexy gravely voice will work wonders for you. The film is only 104 minutes long unfortunately but as it is based on just “ONE Fine Day” only I guess they didn’t want to stretch it out too much. It is very sweet film that you can curl up to. We all like to see a man’s sensitive side. Not my top favourite film but one of them definitely
Hope you enjoy it too!
