Once upon a time in Mexico 2003 Directed by Robert Rodriguez The finale to a trilogy of the El Mariachi films.
Antonio Bandera plays a western style bad but good guy who had fallen in love with Carolina (Salma Hayek), battling with Johnny Depp (Sands) who once again plays a bit of an odd ball character with three arms and crazy battles that take out his eyes along with an obsession for a pork meal served.
El Mariachi is offered a chance to seek vengeance for the death of his wife and daughter but after giving up his gun wielding trade he chooses to accept the opportunity which leads him on the trail of Agent Sands (Johnny Depp). Drug lord Barillo (Willem Dafoe) complicates matters and bullets soon start to shower the show. El Mariachi's vengeance is fed and the legend comes to a close after lots of bullet, guitar playing and a great cast line up creates a brilliant set up for the whole film.
Unfortunately this film does lack in areas and I find that some of it is kind of wasted space to be honest but the Hollywood attraction this film brought for a revitalized western is encouraged by such a rich cast and crew - director Robert Rodriguez. Some fantastic effects through out the film. I think the fact Johnny Depp is in this film can be a bonus for any person he adds the quirky style he does to all of his characters and helps bring out a character that isn't stereotyped by its script. Brilliant action all round but some slow paced scenes.
A sparkling refreshing western and something different for the film collection! Great considering the rest of the trilogy don't have the Hollywood appeal that this does. It shines through all modern westerns and recreates a brilliant modern and up to date entertainment.
The DVD has some great additional features which is a bonus for any DVD and I think it gives a better insight for anyone into how the film industry and especially westerns has changed over the years. The Special Features menu includes: Commentary by Robert Rodriguez 8 Deleted Scenes and optional commentary 4 Featurettes: Inside Troublemaker Studios; Film is dead, An evening wih Robert Rodriguez, The Anti-Hero's Journey; The Good the Bad and the Bloody; Inside KNB FX, 2 Short films by Robert Rodriguez and also a couple of trailers. The features for this DVD are really extensive and give you loads of information on the film, the director and just general behind the scenes work.
Best bit - special effects created on Sands (Johnny Depp) eyes by KNB FX during a battle.
A great new recreated western and a fantastic end to a trilogy.
