Taken around 1971/2 by young photographer Robert Haines they record life in the Welsh valleys in the village of Heolgerrig and nearby Merthyr Tydfil. Heolgerrig was a very close-knit community with Welsh as the first language. It was a mining community where most of the men worked underground and life seemed to revolve around the pub and the chapel.Merthyr Tydfil once the 'Iron Capital' of the world had a justifiable reputation as 'tough' with characters such as hard man Melvin Webber who died after being blasted by a shotgun and 'Mad' Malcolm for whom no chemical substance was too strong. The early Seventies were a time of flux and looking at these powerful photographs now many of the extraordinary characters featured seem to have drifted in from a previous century. Haines photographed the local people with enthusiasm and energy. Some he knew well others were complete strangers. Some spent their days in the pub others worked underground where living conditions were often very poor. The photographs speak to us today of a world very different to our own.

One of the best known films to rise out of the hong kong martial arts movie genre. Once upon a time in China shows why Jet Li can be compared to the likes of Jackie Chan. In this movie Jet Li (or should i say Wong Fei Hung) portrays a martial arts master who is the best at fighting, funny and for the first time in a chinese martial arts movie a love story blooms from begining to end!
Plot summary: Plot: China is in turmoil, with Western influence having an upsetting effect on China's long cultural history. Wong Fei-Hong (Jet Li) must fight dastardly foreigners intent on smudging China with their gweilo presence. Said bastard foreigners are in cahoots with a local band of Chinese who frame Wong's local militia for a series of terrorist acts.
Meanwhile, Leung Fu (Yuen Biao), a member of said evil band of Chinese, gets attracted to Aunt Yee (Rosamund Kwan). Fu hooks up with Master Yim (Yen Shi-Kwan), who wants to supplant Wong's status as the number one kung-fu guy. To accomplish his goal, Master Yim hooks up with the bastard band of Chinese who want to get Wong Fei-Hong.
Eventually, all the evil parties make a deal with the bastard foreigners and try to ship Chinese women to America. Their plan: to entice Chinese workers to head to America as coolies. Aunt Yee is kidnapped as part of this plot, and Leung Fu objects. Now he and Wong Fei-Hong must save Yee AND come to terms with the reality of gweilos in Asia. It's like this: the Chinese have kung-fu, but the foreigners have guns.
A definitly must see movie for chinese martial arts film lover and anyone generally interested in martial arts movies with a touching story.
Advantages: Great atomsphere to the film Disadvantages: If you don't like wires, you won't like this film
Plot:
the film is based on chinese hero wong fei hung, no doubt if you are fimilar with hong kong cinema you will already be fimilar with wong fei hung. Countless films have been based on his life. Jackie chans drukern master is another popular film based him as well.
The setting of the plot is very good, a clash between old traditions and the need for trade. The plot allows for some deep emotions shown by actors. A true fight against greed and ... ...the atomsphere of the fight scenes, the most memorable fight scene is where jet lee is fighting in the pouring rain and starts kicking around a log.... it goes really slow and you see the movements of the log and jet lee as the rain pours down. Artistic very artistic. I think that one scene makes this film better than hidden dragon, it must have taken ages to make that scene work properly.
Performances:
Jet lees best performance by quite some distance, ...

Advantages: Builds on everything great about the 1st movie.. and then some Disadvantages: Again like the 1st movie, cultural/historical significance may not be apparent to all
enjoyment of watching action movie fight scenes in the future... quite simply, you will not see ANYTHING else like this in Hollywood. Even in HK cinema, this has to rate as one of the top confrontations ever captured on film.
Tsui Hark's OUATIC2 is a remarkable movie and in my opinion a prime example of how a sequel can be done right. After watching this movie, you might begin to wonder if maybe bigger can also be better after all.
ONCEUPON A TIMEINCHINA 2 - DVD
PICTURE: 5/5
The DVD of OUATIC2 from the excellent Hong Kong Legends (HKL) label is more than worthy of the film itself. Just don't expect it to stand up to the latest Hollywood DVD releases with pristine image transfer. Remember, the original prints of many HK movies have been stored in neglectful conditions resulting in picture deterioration of the source material ...
Advantages: something for everyone, even women love these movies Disadvantages: A little dated now, sometimes a little to tongue in cheek.
This is the better way to see Jet Li in action, before making westernised movies. Great Kung-Fu action sequences telling the story of a real chinese legend Wong-Fei Hung. There have been many films made portraying this person but the OnceUpon A TimeinChina movies tell the legend the best. Some small elements of fantasy within some fight scenes but for the most part raw hard hitting martial arts. Films are better in cantonese with subtitles rather than cheesy dubbing.
This box contains the first three of a total of six movies. The other three movies are titled Last Hero inChina, Onceupon a TimeinChina and America, {Kung-Fu shenanigans in the wild west} and Onceupon a TimeinChina 6 {avoid this, this is the only one that doesn't star Jet Li and it's very poor}
Much like Rocky through the course of the movies you see a love ...
Advantages: not just great action, but great storytelling and characterisations Disadvantages: not many, though cultural/historical context might be lost on some
OnceUpon A TimeInChina (OUATIC) sees Jet Li in a career defining role as Wong Fei Hung - a real life legendary folk hero who lived during the mid 19th to early 20th century in the Fushan region of China. The name might also be familiar to Jackie Chan fans, who also portrayed Wong Fei Hung in the fantastic, though very different, Drunken Master movies.
Set in the late 19th century during a period of turmoil in Chinese history, OUATIC is as equally accomplished as a period movie as it is a martial arts one. The martial arts genre has all too often been littered with movies devoid of substance beyond the action itself but this is definitely not the case here. With China facing exploitation through foreign imperialist forces, Wong Fei Hung fights to uphold traditional values but the film also explores his conflict as he becomes ...

DVD Description
In one of the recurring gags of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, attempts to take Wong Fei Hung's picture always fail. The failure to capture the image of Wong (Jet Li) serves as an appropriate metaphor for the place of the Ching Dynasty folk hero in Chinese cultural memory. A legendary master of a variety of kung fu styles, Wong has been subject to numerous interpretations in dime novels and films since the 1930s. In the late 1970s an irreverent portrait of the young Wong Fei Hung emerged in DRUNKEN MASTER. In director Tsui Hark's hand, the beloved historical figure is given the full lionized treatment as he fights for dignity and self-determination against Western imperialists. A revisionist drama that recalls the struggle of the small-property owner fighting for her land in Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, Hark's epic is both a tragic and heroic examination of China's transition to modernity. Like the best of Hark's films (ZU: WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN), ONCE UPON A TIME contains imaginative fight sequences, including "no-shadow" kicks and a thrilling battle using bamboo ladders.
