On the Buses follows the day-to-day antics of lecherous lay-about Stan Butler, a bus driver at the local depot, and his equally lazy and lecherous best friend and conductor Jack Harper. Together the pair will do near enough anything to avoid doing work. The bus company's Inspector however has other ideas and is constantly reminding them to 'Get that bus out'. Somehow though the Inspector is the least of Stan's worries because when he gets home he knows all too well that his overbearing mother will be there for him to deal with and that's before he has to cope with his sister Olive and her tight-fisted husband Arthur.
Series 4 of on the Buses contains 13 fantastic episodes and follows the same pattern as the previous two series' with each 25 minute episode telling a different story. Obviously therefore the episodes can be viewed at stand alones but more enjoyment is definitely to be had if they are viewed in chronological order. Unfortunately industrial action at the time of filming this series means that 7 of the 13 episodes only exist in black and white. This does at first make you feel like the series is heading backwards but fortunately this feeling doesn't last for long because the scripting of all the episodes is so fantastic that you soon forget that you are watching them in black and white.
The cast for series 4 remains the same as in the previous two series' and once again outstanding performances are put in by all involved. Reg Varney is excellent as Stan Butler and his relationships with the rest of his family as well as Jack and the Inspector are really played to perfection. Bob Grant, as Jack Harper also puts in another great performance and the pair spark seamlessly off one another providing a great on-screen partnership.
Anna Karen however is ultimately my favourite. Her portrayal of the ever-eating, always ill Olive is fantastic and although she is often the brunt of many of the family's jokes she can certainly give as good as she gets on many occasions. Her relationship with her husband Arthur, played by Michael Robbins is also portrayed extremely well once again. Doris Hare, as Mum is also wonderful and seems to play her character with such ease that it makes the family relationships seem all the more natural.
As mentioned earlier the scripting of the episodes within this series really is fantastic and each episode quite unique to the one before. The comedy as in the previous series' is a blend of slapstick and subtle humour, which I think works exceptionally well and helps to keep the comedy moments fresh. There is of course many well-known and often repeated phrases that also draw in more than a few laughs. Arthur's constant "what a lot of rot you do talk", the Inspector's "I 'ate you Butler" and Olive's "How Rude!" are just a few of them.
Each episode within this series flows very well and in my opinion this is because of the brilliant relationships between the characters. These are of course a great exaggeration of normal family life but because the family do, do normal activities they are somewhat more believable and therefore the humour that they generate within the storylines is all the more worthwhile.
Because the scripting of all the episodes in series 4 in so good it is quite difficult for me to choose a favourite episode and so I'm not going to. I'm simply going to tell you about two of the episodes I found most enjoyable. Despite these choices the rest of the episodes on the DVD are so good that to be perfectly honest I could have chosen any two. The two I have chosen however are "The 'L' Bus" and "The Anniversary".
In "The 'L' Bus" Stan and Jack are placed in charge of the learner bus. To them this seems like the perfect excuse to skive or, when Stan breaks Olive and Arthur's bed whilst trying to fix it, transport a new bed home. Obviously however Inspector Blake is not going to stand for that and so Stan and Jack must do the very best they can to deliver the bed before the Inspector even gets a whiff off it.
In "The Anniversary" Olive and Arthur celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. On the morning a present from Aunt Maud arrives. It's a lovely little dog that olive immediately names Scruffy. Arthur as usual is less than pleased by the new addition to the family although this time it seems he may have good reason. To make matters worse Olive has also cooked a special meal to celebrate the special occasion.
The rest of the episodes in the series see Stan and Jack get placed on Christmas duty in the depot, put in charge of the kid's outing and try and interpret the new safety regulations. Furthermore Stan re-covers Mum's upholstery and tries to beat inflation by taking in a lodger.
On the Buses series 4 retails around the £7.99. For this price you receive 325 minutes of classic entertainment that will not fail to raise any mood.
The complete episodes from the fourth series that follows the antics of Stan the bus driver and Jack, his conductor as they try to avoid the miserable Inspector Blake.
