Much of the comedy derives from gender role reversal--Stan and Arthur forced to do the household chores when Olive and Mum fall ill ("Family Flu"); "The Canteen", in which the busmen decide to run the canteen themselves; or "The Darts Match", in which Stan and Jack are bested at darts by--imagine--a pair of dollybird clippies.Despite its immense popularity,On the Buseshasn't dated well. Like the buses themselves, the jokes don't arrive very often and when they do, they're visible a long way off. The studio audience whoops cathartically at anything remotely alluding to sex, making you wonder at the repressed nature of British society in 1969. In later decades it would come to be treasured as somewhat creaky kitsch by audiences nostalgic for an age of politically incorrect innocence. On the DVD:On the Buseshas no extra features here. The original black and white versions have scrubbed up reasonably well, although defects such as fading sound and poor dubbing have proven beyond amendment. --David Stubbs

On the Buses is a classic situational comedy that ran for seven series between the years of 1969 and 1973. Despite its age it simply has to be my favourite ever comedy and is something I can watch over and over again.
On the Buses follows the day to day antics of lazy bus driver Stan Butler who along with his conductor Jack Harper will do anything for an easy day. The Inspector how has other ideas and is constantly reminding them to ... ...and don't lets get started on his sister Olive and her tight-fisted husband Arthur.
Series 3 of on the Buses contains 13 fantastic episodes and follows the same pattern as the previous two series' with each 25 minute episode telling a different story. Obviously therefore the episodes can be viewed at stand alones but more enjoyment is definitely to be had if they are viewed in chronological order.

The Inspector how has other ideas and is constantly reminding them to 'Get that bus out'. But he's the least of Stan's worries because when he gets home he knows all too well that he's got his overbearing mother to deal with and don't lets get started on his sister Olive and her tight-fisted husband Arthur.

The cast for series 3 remains the same as in series 2 and all involved once again put in outstanding performances. Reg Varney is sublime as Stan and draws a laugh every time he appears on screen. His partnership with Jack Harper (Bob Grant) is also well developed by this point and so the pair seems to seamlessly fit together and spark off one another with ease.
Doris Hare once again plays the over doting mother to perfection and the relationship between her and the other characters seems natural and unforced. Furthermore Anna Karen as Olive and Michael Robbins as Arthur have the love hate relationship down to a fine art and so manage to draw in a vast quantity of laughs through their snide remarks to one another.
The comedy is like in the previous series' a mix of slapstick and subtle humour and I think this works exceptionally well, as quite often it is what is not said that makes you laugh. Because the character relationship are more developed in this series a great deal of humour is also found in the way they react with one another and as catchphrases become well known you find yourself waiting eagerly for them to appear in conversation. The way in which the family interact with one another is obviously an exaggeration of normal family life and so also adds a humorous element but because some of their day-to-day behaviour is so typical and so normal this humour is extended and made both believable and worthwhile.
In my opinion this series is better than both its predecessors and being the first one to be filmed in colour it has a certain charm and sparkle that the others never had. The episode scripting for all of the episodes is also superb and I'm hard pushed to choose my favourite. However if push came to shove I would have to name 'The Cistern' and 'Brew it Yourself'.
In 'The Cistern' Stan arrives home late at night and wakes the whole house up when the toilet refuses to flush properly. In trying to fix it the chain comes off in his hand, leaving Mum wanting for a new toilet. But purchasing a new low-level loo was always going to be a tricky task what with so many to choose from and having Stan fit that new loo was always going to cause problems.
In 'Brew it Yourself' Stan decides to save some money down at the pub by brewing his own beer. Once brewed Stan gulps down a pint or so on his break time although other family members are reluctant to even give it a go. Once he leaves however Arthur can't resist the temptation. Back at work Stan is seriously struggling to stand upright due to the fact that the beer was a lot stronger than he could ever have imagined. That's the least of his worries however because when he returns home the beer bucket is empty and the rest of the family are a little worse for wear.
The rest of the series see Stan take a liking to the Inspector's niece, get two-way radio unit fitted into his cab and inadvertently bring a snake home with him. Furthermore he discovers his first aid simply isn't up to scratch and gets stuck on his bus in the middle of an insanely thick fog.
On the Buses series 3 retails around the £7.99 and for 325 minutes of brilliant entertainment I don't think this is a bad price at all. In fact for all the enjoyment it will provide I think it's a damn good price.
Advantages: very funny Disadvantages: Nothing really.
ON THE BUSES ============ Written by created by Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney and originally broadcast from 1969 to 1973. On the buses ran for 74 episodes each being a half hour long and lasted for 7 series. They also made 3 movies, On the Buses, Mutiny on the Buses and Holiday on the Buses. In the end Stan spend most of his time desperately failing to get anywhere. In the first series Stans mum was played by Cicely Courtneidge who was a house hold name and a star in her own right but she left and that's when Doris Hare took over the role and made it her own. The series pretty much carried on in the same vein until Arthur decided to leave and eventually Stan left. The series hobbled on for one more ...
