Advantages: A good story Disadvantages: Dated, DiCaprio, some unpleasant scenes
The Beach was released in 2000, adapted from the novel by Alex Garland by the team of director Danny Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge. This is a film that I saw when it came out, at the cinema I believe, I have seen it once since then, and I watched it again just a few weeks ago.
The Beach stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Richard, a young American who travels to Thailand seeking adventure and escape. Once there, he meets a French couple, Étienne and Francoise, and after he is given a map to a legendary paradise-like beach, they set off on an adventure to find it. Needless to say, they do, and find the community who live there. They have a positively idyllic time for a while, and then things start to unravel.
The story of The Beach is uplifting, shocking, horrifying and hilarious. I have never read the book, nor anything else by Alex ...

'The Beach' in which Richard, a young traveler is addicted to nicotine, video games and Vietnam War movies. In a Bangkok hotel he is given a map which leads him to a legendary island paradise...
My best friend was really keen to watch this movie as she has just returned back from a 3 month trip to Thailand (where the film is set) and she had also read the book out there....I thought hey why not, Leo was still looking rather good looking back in those days.
I was really enjoying the film at first, I found it very interesting and I thought the 3 main actors DiCaprio, Ledoyen and Canet were excellent, but as the story continues I found myself getting a little bored.
The movie starts with Richard (Dicaprio) arriving in Bangkok looking for action. On his first night he is awoken by Daffy (Carlyle) a 'crazy' guy who talks of a magical ...

Although "The Beach" didn't wasn't too successful at the box office this past winter, true movie fans are encouraged to check "The Beach" out as it hits DVD. While many moviegoers avoided this film because they aren't big DiCaprio fans, the truth is that whether or not one loves him, one of the main reason to see this film is because of DiCaprio. Whether one is a Leonardo DiCaprio fan or not, DiCaprio and director Danny Boyle bring the film based on the best-selling book to life with excellent cinematography and astounding acting. This film alone proves DiCaprio isn't just another pretty boy in Hollywood and actually is one of the most talented young actors around today. The film's cinematography is yet another reason that makes the film so engaging. While the breathtaking beach scenes are much more powerful on the big screen ...

...a powerful wake up call. (The Hollywood Reporter, )
DVD Description
After the entire Northern Hemisphere is destroyed by a nuclear war, a group of survivors in Australia prepare for their own inevitable demise. As a deadly cloud of radiation creeps toward the continent, some survivors cling to hopes that life as they know it has continued somewhere, hopes that are fed by the discovery of a mysterious, erratic radio signal emanating from San Diego. Others, such as Astaire's sardonic, race-car driving physicist and Gardner's world-weary, tippling party girl, throw their energies into squeezing the last drops from their lives. A grim, unflinching clarion call for sanity that inches along at a maddeningly deliberate and suspenseful pace. Based on the novel by Nevil Shute. Academy Award Nominations: 2, Best Editing (Frederic Knudtson) and Best Score (Ernest Gold).
