Dickens' heart warming story of a young man befriending an escaped convict who becomes his unknown benefactor and of the consequences for the young man as he establishes himself in the world. A Tale Of Two Cities - Dickens' epic tale set during the French Revolution follows the fortunes of a disillusioned English lawyer Sidney Carton (Dirk Bogarde) whose solace is drink and who bears an uncanny resemblance to a young French aristocrat named Darnay. Carton defends Darnay but ends up falling in love with Darnay's fiancee Lucy. When Darnay is imprisoned by the revolutionary mob Carton is given the chance to redeem himself as he leaves for Paris for Darnay's aid. A truly gripping tale incomparably told and flawlessly performed. Advantages: A haunting black and white classic Disadvantages: None
in poverty, when he was eleven his father spent a year in debtors' prison.
He knew all about Victorian child labour due to his time working in a dye warehouse. His writing skills though soon found him a job as a reporter, covering the House of Commons, for London Newspapers in 1837.
His talents were soon recognised and he wrote OliverTwist between 1837-9, Nicholas Nickleby in 1838-9, Old Curiosity Shop in 1840-1, A Christmas Carol in 1843, David Copperfield in 1849-50, Bleak House in 1852-3, Little Dorrit in 1855-7, and A Tale of Two Cities in 1859, among other works.
It was in 1860 that he began to write GreatExpectations.
All of Dickens's novels are largely character-driven, rather than plot-driven. This means that successful adaptations depend especially on the intensity with which the characters are developed by ...
Advantages: It wasn't to expensive Disadvantages: Its very long
OliverTwist is a interesting film. It keeps you glued to your seets and its a film for all the family with bits of comedy and emotion. The film is about a young boy which is an orphan called oliver who is moved around to different orphanages regularly. As he grew up he was forced to work and live in a warehouse. Afterwards he ran from the warehouse and ended up in london, here he was found by a man called Fagan who took him him and taught him how to steal. I enjoyed many parts of the movie especially the parts when Oliver is being taught and his character devepment during the movie. He grows in confidence and learns much from Fagan. Olivertwist is a long film and some of the story may be deemed boring for some of the audience. On the whole OliverTwist is a fantastic production and was well worth the money i payed for it, I would ...

I'm a regular visitor to the Post Office, especially since I joined BookMooch. So I was pretty annoyed when I found out that the branch nearest to where I work (which is the main Carlisle Post Office) is closing and relocating to WHSmiths in town. I don't really understand this move since the Post Office is ALWAYS jam packed, as is WHSmiths. The same has happened where my parents live in Brentwood, and I hear that it has been a disaster as elderly people and those with buggies can't access it as it is upstairs and the lift is permanently broken.
Buying the DVD
Anyway, Post Office rant aside, I was browsing the DVDs which they are selling off for £1.25 (I bought quite a few classics) and came across "GreatExpectations". Having read this for GCSE English Lit I thought I'd buy a copy for my friend as a joke present ...

DVD Description
Two classic David Lean adapations of Charles Dickens' novels on one disc. GREAT EXPECTATIONS: Lean's definitive version of the Dickens classic about an orphaned boy befriended by a mysterious benefactor who enables him to become a gentleman of means. In nineteenth century London, in the gloom of a country graveyard, a young boy encounters an escaped convict, a chance meeting that years later leads the boy to mysterious adventure, wealth and joy. OLIVER TWIST: David Lean's prodigious adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic expands fervently on the theme of a lonely boy in a world of bullies. When the orphan hero, Oliver (John Howard Davies), escapes to London, the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley) delivers him to the notorious Fagan (Alec Guinness), who makes him part of the gang but soon allows for Oliver to take the fall for a bungled pickpocketing scam. To date, no movie has better captured Dickens's blend of sensitivity and violence.
