19th Century London is stunningly brought to life by Academy Award winning director Roman Polanski. When Oliver Twist (Barney Clark) escapes from a miserable apprenticeship to London, the Artful Dodger (Harry Eden) introduces him to an infamous gang of pickpockets led by the notorious Fagin (Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley). After a robbery goes wrong an innocent Oliver soon finds himself on the run from the evil Bill Sykes (Jamie Foreman). Mixing comedy, sumptuous sets and visionary imagination, this classic tale celebrates the triumph of a young boy's spirit and has something for all the family.

and insight into the timeless tale of the boy who wanted more. Inspired by Charles Dickens' original text, he begins the story - often overlooked by other adaptations - with the chain of events which lead to Oliver Twist's anonymous birth in the Parish Workshouse. Follow the twists and turns of Oliver's colourful young life through to the fairy tale ending of a journey often beset with obstacles. The result is a wonderful drama filled with dark comedy, astonishing vivacity and soaring imagination.

A brief and quick plot to the film - The story of Oliver Twist is a well known story, however for the benefit of the few who are not already enlightened I shall endeavour to do so this very moment. Oliver is an orphan from birth; he grew up in a workhouse. Oliver decides to go to MR Bumble and ask for more food and is scolded for cheek and greed and taken before the board of governors where they decide that he should be gotten rid of and thus he is duly put up for sale, a coffin maker snaps the young lad up for the price of 3 whole guineas (yep you heard me correctly).
Oliver soon runs away and sets his sights on the famous city of London (god knows why), once there he runs into a wry young lad nick named dodger who is an infamous and renowned thief. Dodger takes him to a man called Fagin who looks after/owns homeless boys and sends them out to pilfer items of worth from unsuspecting people so as to make a quick shilling. Oliver being the innocent angel he is mistakenly gets caught on his first day out with dodger and is arrested. A kind old gentleman testifies that he is not the culprit at Oliver's hearing and from the shock the poor boy faints before the judge. The man takes him home and nurses him back to health, Fagin and his associates decide that Oliver might peach (snitch) on them if he is allowed to stay so he is kidnapped and brought back to the dank and rotting lair back to Fagin and the gang.
A woman called Nancy who is the girlfriend of Bill Sykes (a notorious crook) informs the man who took Oliver in of Oliver's location who promptly informs the police to go and find him. Nancy gets found out by Dodger who has been spying on her the whole time ... in the end it's a very happy ending... except for Nancy... and perhaps Fagin.
Summary - This modern version of Oliver Twist is fantastic. The actors perform to a good standard and I loved the fact that the film brought in additional actors such as Bill Sykes' friend that robs houses with him. The actors have an uncanny resemblance to the traditional musical version of Oliver Twist and Ben Kingsley as Fagin was truly a sight to watch. In the story of Oliver twist there is an array of personalities adhered to each character; from watching this film one is left with the impression that greed is mans Achilles heel and each man serves his punishment... eventually. The only problem I have with the film is that it wasn't more original. the film was made in 2005 and should have tried to provide something unique and original such as the BBC televised version of Charles Dickens' novel made in 2007. The DVD costs a mere £5 from HMV and is packed with special features regarding:

This is a fantastic film and if you or your family are a fan of the classic story then this is a sound DVD to purchase for Christmas.
Oliver Twist is the story about a young orphan boy (Barney Clark) who was abandoned early on in his life. The first time i watched this ilm was when i was about 8 in school. I felt sorry for Oliver because he had to work for an undertaker and wasn't paid or fed properly. Oliver then runs away to London and we see him make new friends and get introduced to the Artful Dodger, a pickpocket who looks after children if they rob for him. We can see it's ...

Oliver Twist is a interesting film. It keeps you glued to your seets and its a film for all the family with bits of comedy and emotion. The film is about a young boy which is an orphan called oliver who is moved around to different orphanages regularly. As he grew up he was forced to work and live in a warehouse. I am sure that when most people think of Charles Dickens' "OliverTwist" on film, their thoughts automatically go to the 1968 musical ?Oliver!
While I agree that it was a great film, if you are looking for a film however, that is a more serious and truthful, by far the best film adaption of ?OliverTwist? is David Lean?s classic 1948 ...

Well this is Oliver (The Musical 1968 version), based on OliverTwist, written by Charles Dickens. It is set in Victorian London and OliverTwist is an orphan in one of London's workhouses. The story starts in the workhouse with all the children going down to have there supper (Gruel), after eating Oliver gets up and says those immortal words "Please Sir, can I have some more", he is dragged into the other room where the bosses are eating their food and sent out with Mr Bumble to be sold. (I will describe the songs later on in the review).

DVD Description
Acclaimed director Roman Polanski turns a dark eye toward the classic Charles Dickens novel OLIVER TWIST, about a charming orphan boy (Barney Clark) whose life seems to depend solely on the whims of fate. Abandoned early in life, Oliver first seems doomed to life in a workhouse, where he is farmed out to a local undertaker where he regularly is underfed and mistreated. Hoping to improve his lot in life, Oliver runs away to London, where he falls in with a gang of petty criminals led by the fence Fagin (Ben Kingsley) and the young pickpocket the Artful Dodger (Harry Eden). His new situation seems like relief, until he meets Mr. Brownlow (Edward Hardwicke), who sees Oliver's true character and potential and seems determined to sway destiny. Despite his innocent performance, eleven-year old Barney Clark was already a seasoned professional when Polanski recruited him to play Oliver, including studies at the Anna Scher Theatre and performances in the film THE LAWLESS HEART and British television dramas FOYLE'S WAR and THE BRIEF. Also of note is the moving score by award-winning composer Rachel Portman, which brings to life the gritty life of Victorian London. Polanski can now add OLIVER TWIST to his array of classic films, including THE PIANIST and CHINATOWN, which forever will shape cinematic vision.
