Ocean’s Eleven is slightly unusual in that events never really deviate from the plan – they just look like they do. It’s a slick enough slice of cinema – so why did I still find myself sitting there at the end feeling ever so slightly cheated?
Daniel ‘Danny’ Ocean is released from jail on the premise that he is a reformed character. This is, naturally, completely untrue, and his first task is to engage the services of his friend a former partner in crime Rusty ‘Russ’ Ryan. It would seem that Ocean’s stint behind bars has served only to enable him to plan his next (and greatest) crime – an ambitious assault on a string of highly lucrative Las Vegas casinos. Ocean’s plans have been calculated down to the very last detail, but such is the complexity of the operation that he and Russ need to accumulate a team of the finest criminals around them. They set about doing this and before long the associates – Ocean’s Eleven – embark on the preparation for their plans. However, it would appear that Ocean’s motives are not quite what they seem to be. The owner of the three casinos, Terry Benedict, has something else that Danny Ocean is after – and if faced with the choice between getting this or saving his associates, it is not entirely clear what choice Ocean will make.
There is no denying that this film absolutely oozes style. Any movie set in Las Vegas is likely to be glamorous, but the members of Ocean’s Eleven really capitalise on every opportunity and there is a great sense of mischief about the proceedings. A large part of the film’s opening half is spent introducing the members of the gang and full credit goes to Soderbergh for his skill at storytelling – a much-preferred technique to the very over used comic book style of Guy Ritchie. Ocean’s team comprises a wildly different collection of characters ranging from a Chinese acrobat to an elderly character actor. There is even a rather dubious Cockney thief whose accent is so forced one can’t help thinking that somebody is actually having a bit of a dig at Mr Ritchie. Being introduced to and getting to know these characters is actually a real pleasure – no dog fights and foul-mouthed lunatics here. The team is brought together through work and sometimes friendship – and this makes things work really well. Nonetheless, there is something very comic book-like in the way in which Danny Ocean pulls together his team, acting like a criminal Charles Xavier gradually pooling together his X-Men.
The planned heist is an interesting one, purely because of the challenge faced by the men. The film doesn’t try and blind you with science but still draws things together in a convoluted way. The robbery is complicated because of the thorough security arrangements in place in the three casinos. You can’t help, therefore, becoming rather intrigued as to exactly how the team is going to pull it off. Strangely enough, the portrayal of the characters is such that you never really expect one of the gang to betray any of the others, and in many ways this makes Ocean’s Eleven quite a relaxing film to watch. Sometimes, a film can almost be quite stressful if you are continually expecting somebody to do the dirty.
My earliest reservation came with the introduction of Tess, Danny’s ex-wife and now partner of Benedict, the casino owner. Julia Roberts is attractive enough in her own way, but her glamorous entrance at the head of a staircase seemed to fall flat. I’m quite sure that the audience was supposed to go, “Wow!” in much the same way that the characters do, but it didn’t work for me and I thought that the character of Tess was never really developed properly. Her ability to change her reaction towards Danny was a little bit too hasty for me and the presence of a woman in the story almost seemed gratuitous – why does everything have to be about a woman?
The good thing about Ocean’s Eleven, despite what might have happened off the set, is that nobody dominates the film at the expense of the others. George Clooney makes a good Danny Ocean, managing to blend the air of mischief with an air of romantic heroism in almost equal doses. Brad Pitt is convincing in one of his naughty but nice guy roles and the combination of him and Clooney on screen is very entertaining. The casino boss, Benedict, is cast perfectly in the shape of Andy Garcia, and with his dark, almost devilish looks, he is menacing without being over the top. Other star names include Matt Damon, who almost seems sidelined, Elliott Gould, Casey Affleck and Joshua Jackson (whose popularity will remain a mystery for me).
This modern-day remake manages to retain the gentlemanly spirit of the original movie, whilst still creating a film that feels fresh and new. There is only one problem with this, which is that modern film audiences might be expecting something with a little bit more bite. I have grown so accustomed to watching films about people who double-cross and turn on one another that the ending of Ocean’s Eleven almost seems disappointing. It is quite a satisfying ending, and the whole thing is a good bit of storytelling, but it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Ocean’s Eleven certainly isn’t a masterpiece – it’s too simple and probably just a bit too gentle to receive that status. Having tempered my expectations a bit more, I think I would have been more satisfied with this film. I don’t think this film deserves the rave reviews it has received to date, but I won’t hesitate to recommend it as a way to pass a pleasant enough hour or two.
...Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, Ocean's Eleven had to be good. I haven't read a bad review of it yet, and I certainly wasn't disappointed when I got round to watching it! I was half-expecting an attractive film, but a boring one with no substance. Nonetheless, I bought it on DVD and decided that if it really was that bad, I would take it back - it's been a month and it's still sitting inside the DVD player, having been watched numerous times!
It was originally ... ...it did moderately well) but Ocean's Twelve is to be released later this year. It's not surprising when you hear the updated Ocean's Eleven made $182m at the US box office!

Not many men would bring a girl George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Andy Garcia as a gift for a first date, so I guess I was lucky.
After our rendezvous at the pub my date and I went back to Chez Moi for coffee. And once inside he pulled it out and slipped it into my hand with great ceremony and a kiss – a copy of Oceans Eleven on DVD! Sweet, wasn't it?
We popped the disc in the player and cuddled up on the sofa. I was pretty comfy ... ...to see much of the film. But boy, was I wrong! The beginning is a little slow, I grant you, and I probably paid a little too much attention to the Boy Wonder rather than the TV, but then the true rhythm of the movie kicks in.
Oceans Eleven then becomes a flick that grabs your attention and reels you in. It isn’t particularly action-packed or fast-paced as you would expect from your run-of-the-mill heist movie, but rather a slow burn that manages ...

...firmly in the shade. Ocean's Eleven reunites Soderburgh with George Clooney whose first collaboration was the magnificent Out of Sight, the addition of Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon to name but a few of the dazzling cast ensures that this film continues the successful partnership.
The story is hardly a complex one but there are a myriad of little twists and turns that keep the audience guessing and Soderburgh ensures the film sizzles along ... ...(Clooney), is intent on pulling off the greatest heist of all time, his target, not one, but three Las Vegas casinos, the score an unbelivable $163 million. Like I said, hardly a scorchingly original plot, and the formulaic nature is exemplified in the opening thirty minutes as Danny rounds up a suitable motley crew to help him pull off his caper. It is here that we realise that this is no ordinary crime flick, the list of stars is exceptional, Pitt ...

For the record I would like to state that in general I don’t like remakes. For the few movie-lovers out there not knowing what a remake is I’ll define it: a movie based on another, very likely successful movie, taking over crucial plot points, at times even dialoge, but featuring a new cast, possibly the same director and the original’s stars in self-referential cameos. Sure, there have been some good, and sometimes even better-then-teir-original ... ...probably can’t do wrong remaking a film that wasn’t much in the first place, improving its flawed spots and taking a whole new spin on it. John McTiernan tried it in his second Norman-Jewison-remake “Rollerball” (2002) the first being the quite well-made “Thomas Crown Affair” (1999), but failed miserably. Steven Soderbergh, last year’s highly celebrated Oscar-winning director of “Traffic”, however is a different sport.

Ocean's Eleven was the not-such-a-surprise big screen and big budget hit of earlier this year. Directed by Stephen Soderbergh of Traffic and Erin Brockovich fame, and with an enviably star-studded cast list, it was always destined for great things. Although I actually missed its cinematic release, it was universally recommended. And so, when I browsing through play.com for some inspiration and came across the DVD release, I went for it. Danny Ocean ... ...that's actually rather good. Ocean's Eleven is one of the few.
Having not seen the original 1960 film, I can't provide a compare-and-contrast discussion. But as a modern-day heist story it's great, contemporary cultural references such as Lennox Lewis and David Holmes' fantastic, effortlessly funky lounge-core soundtrack firmly place the story in the present. Directed by Soderbergh, produced by Jerry Weintraub, and with a screenply by Ted Griffin, ...

The basic plot in this crime caper is that 11 friends who were in World War 2 get back together to plan the robberies of five Las Vegas casinos on New Year's Eve. They are asked to do it by a crime boss who wants to hire people who aren't known villains.
They plan to cut the power supply to the casinos and then steal millions of dollars from them. Can they pull off this major crime with the same precision they carried out their army tasks? The film's main stars are Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean, Dean Martin as Sam, Peter Lawford as Jimmy. Sammy Davis Jr as Josh and Angie Dickinson as Danny's fed up wife.
The film is largely a product of its time - sexist in places and even hints of racism in the film ...

felt it was a little more disjointed compared to the seamless writing of eleven. It also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones with a rather dodgy accent! Here, Ocean's original eleven have been tracked down by Furious Terry Benedict and are forced to flee America and carry out three heists across Europe to attempt to pay back his money. The film is set out using the 2 week countdown by which time they have to have Terry's money. This creates a sense of urgency, however the mixed time scale with flashbacks made it quite hard to follow at times.
Personally I prefered the single plot in Ocean's 11 to the bussier Ocean's 12. Still a great film and very cleverly written but not as good at it's predecessor.
I managed to pick up the 2 disk DVD for just £7 so a complete bargain and well worth it!
Looking forward to Ocean's 13! ...

Oceans 11 and 12 are both excellent remakes of classic flims. Both films are about classic heists with George Clooney and Brad Pitt as the 'Good' Crooks and Andy Garcia as the 'Bad' Crook. Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts are great and their characters develop across the films. The set piece in Oceans 12 where Julia Roberts plays her character pretending to be Julia Roberts is brilliant.
Whilst I thought they were great individually at the cinema I couldn't justify buying the individual films but the two disc set was great.
Orignially quite expensive you can now get it quite cheaply so I'd reccommend adding it to your DVD collection for when theres nothing on TV and you'd like an entertaining pair of films to watch ...
