earlier stage play. The cast is small (only five
characters who matter), but the acting is
impeccable, and the mix of wicked humour and
social observation make this one of Leigh's best
works. Keith Pratt, a man who fully earns his
surname due to his nit-picking obsessions with
order and detail, takes his partner Candice-Marie,

Calamitous camping with Keith & Candice-Marie

Advantages: Extremely well-acted, hilarious, highly entertaining
Disadvantages: Absolutely none whatsoever

...
Mike Leigh's play Nuts In May was first broadcast by the BBC on 13th January 1976 as part of their "Play For Today" series. The play is in typical Mike Leigh format, where he gives the actors the basic outline of his intended plot and lets them largely adlib the script.

Though Nuts In May was screened on UK TV before Abigail's Party, I didn't see Nuts In May for the first time until about 3 months after I'd seen Abigail's ...
.../> The basic outline of Nuts In May is that husband and wife, Keith and Candice Marie, decide to take a break from their day to day life in a London suburb, and go on a camping holiday in Dorset. After having complained about the noise of his radio, Keith and Candice Marie befriend a young PE teacher called Ray, who pitches his tent a few feet away from them, and it is largely their dubious befriending of him which forms the body of the play as ... more

Ive got a secret! "sweet heart"

Advantages: Brilliant acting !
Disadvantages: Not suited to those who like action every second!

Mike leigh is one of my favourite directors. He manages to make films that touch, move and find raw emotions in his chosen subjects. Always thought provoking with a slice of bittersweet humour and drama. There are occasions when we all see these kind of situations and can relate to them. He also has the ability to create characters that we all recognise in our day to day lives, most of them with idiosycrancies that give the edge to the performance. His skills are using actors many again and again ( Timothy Spall ) filming them unscripted, capturing on screen a real sense of actuality! With films behind him such as Abigails Party, Life is sweet, High hopes and of course Nuts in May its easy to see why how he keeps coming up with a winning formula! I bought the DVD at the cost of £9.99 from woolworths, a bargain, its played several ...
