I was given this as a novelty gift by a friend who understood my verging-on-the-obsessive love of the 90s, cheesy music, quizzes and all things Now...! On face value, it seemed like the perfect present for me, and I couldn't wait to go home, slip the disc in and waste away hours identifying tunes, naming lesser-known members of one-hit-wonder bands and generally showing off the otherwise useless bank of trivia that is My Brain.
First impressions were good, I was greeted by a rousing chorus of Busted's Year 3000 (on a rather short loop, yes, but I suppose most people would want to move on from Matt, Charlie and James ASAP) and a facade worthy of anything Now...! ; shining columns, over-the-top colouir schemes. My goodness, it even catered for sad freaks like myself with the inclusion of Single Player versions of all the games. I still can't quite figure out whether the fact that there are more people out there like me is a worrying or reassuring one.
Anyway, to the game. There are three different modes of play, I Spy, where you answer questions to gradually reveal the face of a band / artist, who you then need to guess, Top 40, where you gradually climb the charts by answering questions, and Top 20, which (barring a few subtleties) is the same as Top 40. The major difference being you start at, yes, you guessed it, #20 as opposed to, well, #40.
Pretty self explanatory, I hear you say. Bingo! The game is fantastically accessible to all (at least until you're asked which Spice Girl's favourite cereal is Frosties - yes, that was indeed a question) and there are decades as well as levels of difficulty to choose from, so fun can be had by all the family. However, the games big downfall is probably a direct result of all the cheesy razzamatazz packed on to this DVD - the speed - or painful lack thereof.
It would be fair to say that by the time you've managed to choose the difficulty, the decade, answer the question, say "yes, I want to play on" and reach question 2, it is more than likely that EMI have released another Now...! compilation. It would be slightly more bearable if this wait was accompanied by the 'dulcet' tones of All Saints/5ive/Vengaboys et al; unfortunately, however, this is not the case, and, instead of Primal Scream, you're faced with a Frozen Screen.
Which is a shame really, as this is the overriding impression of what otherwise would have been a fantastic way to spend time with friends, or, yes, on your own...

Music from EMI
Released: 2005
Age classification: All ages
Genre: Interactive DVD
An appealing title and from a well known collection of music CDs. There are questions selected from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. There are 3 different game types; Top 20 (the one we played), Top 40 and I-Spy. There are multi player and single player options with an on-screen tutorial. Original video and recordings are used in this interactive DVD. A ... ...all music tastes and ages. Ideal for those family gatherings or a friends get together. The video clips and music are all well recorded and clear. It certainly bought back some memories!
I paid £16.99 from HMV.
We found this a slow, repetitive and tiresome game. There are not enough video clips for a DVD game. Many of the questions appear on screen to read and by the time you have read the question you only just have enough time to choose your ...

Advantages: Good Party Game Disadvantages: Painfully Slow
I had been looking out for a good party game for the christmas period, unfortunately I chose this one.
The packaging looks very good and certainly sells the game to you at a not inexpensive £16.99.
When loading the game it is unclear of how to play the different options, and then after selecting can take up to 2 minutes to get to the questions.
The questions are ok, you choose from 5 categories 60's,70's,80's,90's and current, I would judge the ... ...game falls down is the time taken between each question up to 3 minutes, it also fails to use the additional medium that DVD has over a standard box quiz i:e video and pictures with only 20% of the questions using this.
When playing at christmas it took 2 teams 2 hours to complete the game, as you can imagine interest was waning towards the end.
Techical bits are in works on all regions on a standard DVD player. ...
