Despite it’s huge success , the film Notting Hill had never appealed to me . I don’t know if was because of the fact that I was only about ten or eleven when the film came out , and so because of the ‘cover’ of the DVD , as a child , I instantly thought ‘that looks boring’ , and so I had always had that opinion of the film , despite the saying ‘ Never Judge A Book (or in this case , a film) by it’s cover).
However , many years later , I am sat in a media studies lesson in college, when the teacher tells the class that we are going to be watching clips from movies and then analysing the setting , speech , lighting , etc. The first film to come on was Notting Hill. Most people had seen it and some were saying ‘oh this next bit is funny’ whilst we were watching the clip. Whereas I hadn’t seen it. I found the clip that we watch to be quite funny and so based on that clip , I then decided that I HAD to watch the film.
So the other night , whilst doing my usual ‘flicking-through-the-channels-in-case-there’s-something-better on’ with the sky remote
, I saw the film ‘Notting Hill’ , and luckily it was a couple of minutes before starting , so I had caught it just on time. I decided there and then , that this was how I was going to spend the rest of my evening ; watching Notting Hill of course!
Notting Hill is a British romantic comedy movie released in the United Kingdom on the 21st May 1999. The film was directed by Roger Michell and stars Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Running time of this movie is one hundred and twenty four minutes. This movie is a 15.
William owns a book shop which sells books all about travel. He is a single man , after splitting up from his wife. He is sharing his house with a welsh-man called Spike. One day , just like any other normal day , Will is at work when a very famous customer comes in , an event which will change his life. What will happen ? Watch Notting Hill to find out!
In my opinion, this is one of the best ever British romantic comedies ever. I thought a great cast was selected and I couldn‘t have chosen better actors to play the parts myself! If I’m honest though , at the time of watching this film , I would always think ‘oh not a Hugh Grant movie’. I just didn’t like the sound of his name (sorry Hugh) , and I always thought of him as the ‘boring man’, however after watching this film and a couple of others of his , I have become , if I do say so myself , quite a fan. I think he has such a unique acting talent ; his comedy and timing is just perfect.
I had never seen a Julia Roberts movie before this , and so was surprised how I had never come across any of her work before. I found her character to be entertaining , and found it hilarious , the way she reacted towards Will’s ‘foolish behaviour’. I don’t know how she kept a straight face at times , although , then again , she is the world’s best actress.
I really liked the character of Will ; he was so charming and sexy even if he didn’t have that classically -good-looking look about him. I just loved the way he was always making a fool of himself , and found it so funny the way Julia Robert’s character , Anna handled him , so unimpressed and as though he was the most stupidest thing ever! Had me in stitches every time! I liked the fact that the two main characters were total opposites , Will being a true English man , normal whereas Anna was a beautiful American and a huge star. It shows that opposites attract.
Another character I found hilariously funny was Spike ; the welsh man , Will lived with. The things he come out with were so random. He’d say things other people wouldn’t dream of saying and I found this so entertaining. Definitely a good bunch of characters.
I thought that the script was fantastic ; so witty and humorous. I had never heard such funny lines before and often wondered ‘who the hell came up with that’ whilst watching it. Such quotes included ;
Spike: Just going to the kitchen to get some food, then I'm going to tell you a story that will make your b**ls shrink to the size of raisins.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Spike: There's something wrong with this yogurt. William: Ah, that's not yogurt, that's mayonnaise... Spike: Ah, right-o then. [continues to eat it]
Combined with a great cast ; this film is hilarious!
I loved the whole romance surrounding this movie. It is definitely a film that gets you believing in love ; a film star falling for a ‘normal’ guy ? Makes me think . Maybe one day Leonardo Di Caprio !!!WILL!!! Turn up on my doorstep! One day maybe… This film is just so heart warming. If you love romantic comedies , then you’ll adore this.
One thing I found about this movie , was how real it appeared to be. Whilst watching it , I believed what I was seeing , (well Julia Roberts WAS playing herself , after all!) This film , to me seemed to be more like a documentary than an actual film. So the point that I’m making is a good one because it made the film seem more believable to the viewer.
I would definitely recommend this movie!
