Have you ever sat at work daydreaming that one day Brad Pitt (feel free to delete/add name as appropriate) would walk in , see you an instantly fall in love and that you would marry and live happily ever after? Well that's exactly what happened to Hugh Grant or should I say, William Thacker in this movie Notting Hill.
William is a book store owner in a cute little part of Notting Hill. Not many people visit his store so when Julie Roberts wanders in one day he thinks all his Christmases have come at once. Julie plays the part of Anna Scott, a multi award winning actress and Superstar (much like Julie Roberts herself). At first she does not see the cute side of William. At one of their first meetings he pours orange juice all over the front of her top. The she meets his room mate, Spike, played by the brilliant Welsh actor Rhys Ifans and it goes from bad to worse. The theme of the movie then boils down to the ultimate question: can two people fall in love with the whole world watching?
This is one of my favourite English movies on a par with Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually. In fact the screenplay was written by Richard Curtis who also wrote Four Weddings.
Hugh Grant plays his usual but effective character, the shy, somewhat posh and inexperienced in the ways of love English gent. He still has his floppy mop of hair in this movie which makes him cute in a very box like way. He has a really great cast of friends, almost like his family really, that help him in his quest for love and the scenes where they are all together are some of the best in the film.
This movie was the breakout for Rhys Ifans who, not noted as a sex symbol is now dating the very lovely Sienna Miller.
Julie Roberts is great, I guess for her it's almost like art imitating life or the other way round. Anyway I think you see a really genuine side to her in this film which is nice. Being half American it's also nice to see how the English/America sides differ when it comes to dating and romance.
The sound track of the film is good, quite soppy and romantic but this is a rom-com after all. Ronan Keating of Boyzone fame sings, "When you say nothing at all," which reached number one in the UK charts.
The DVD has a number of bonus features which include:
Commentary by the director and writer Deleted Scenes Music Highlights The Travel Book Theatrical Trailers Behind the Scenes
The film is rated PG-13 and runs for approximately two hours and four minutes.
Movie Trivia Apparently the blue door behind which William Thacker lived and is featured quite prominately is not blue, I believe it is black and causes a lot of search problems for people trying to find it who love the film

Advantages: Reliably entertaining slice of romantic fluff Disadvantages: If you don't like the two leads enough to watch them continously for 2 hours, you're in trouble.
