DVD Description
More memorable sketch show comedy from the 1980's NOT THE NINE O'CLOCK NEWS team of Mel Smith, Griff Rhys Jones, Pamela Stephenson and Rowan Atkinson. Full of spoofs and topical satire this second volume includes the classic scene where Rowan Atkinson is casually walking down the street only to be distracted by the camera crew, which causes him to walk straight into that lamp-post. Also includes the songs "I Like Trucking" and "Nice Video Shame About The Song."
Advantages: Timeless comedy. Sheer Genius Disadvantages: Frustrating scene selection. Lack of special features
...THE BEST OF 'NOT THE NINEO' CLOCKNEWS' VOLUME 1
'Not The NineO' ClockNews' is undoubtedly risque in many ways.
It was an innovative and daring idea initially in it's scheduling. The first series aired at the same time as the nine 'oclocknews bulletin and the extremely popular 'The Two Ronnies'. Needless to say, to gain any sort of recognition in the shadow of such strong competition would requite absolute genius on the part of this small sketch show, and thats exactly what 'Not The Nine 'OClockNews' delivers. It was cult viewing when it ran in the 1970s and early 1980s, particularly amongst teenagers and those with an appreciation for the bizarre, the controversial and the politically satirical.
The Show Itself:
NTNOCN is based loosely around a spoof of a news programme, mirroring the newsreader sketches in The Two Ronnies...

Advantages: Immpeccable dry satire of the news today Disadvantages: Too perfect - you may not understand
...There is no middle ground - if you are going to bite chunks out of the media - expect a media backlash as they desparately try to defend themselves against the pomposities of themselves.
The Day Today was so successful in sending up the BBC NineO'ClockNews that some people actually wrote in to 'Points of View' and complained about the state of society today and that "Horses should not be allowed anywhere near the underground."
6 episodes and that was it - from back-street dentists to MTV with Nirvana doing an advert for sanitary towels / from Gerry Adams inhaling helium to remove credibility from his statements at interview to a live report on the War actually caused by the Day Today program this is perfect satire and if this review hasn't already got your brainbuds warbling then nothing will.
You may wish this review was longer...

Advantages: Some funny scenes.. Disadvantages: Too long, not original, boring at times
...The first signs of a Mr Bean character originated on an old BBC show called 'Not the NineO'clockNews'. Eventually, Rowan Atkinson realized that he had a character which was very funny and built the seried Mr Bean.
Mixing slap stick humor, a form of mime (Mr Bean hardly ever talks) and an extremely large amount of bad luck, Mr Bean made most of us giggle as he was served to us in small bits.
Like many TV heroes, the inevitable happened. Mr Bean went to Hollywood!
Bean travels to LA where he is to guard Whitler's Mother as it moves between the National Art Gallery and a private gallery. We follow Mr Beans exploits as nothing seems to go right for him. In a similar way to the classic Charlie Chaplin, Mr Bean manages to somehow avoid being injured as he winds his way through the movie.
Mr Bean is a very funny character...
