When you hear that the working title for this film was, “Ten Things I Hate About Clueless Road Trips When I Can't Hardly Wait to Be Kissed”, you begin to get an idea about what it’s going to be about. NATM (because there’s no way I’m typing the whole title again and again) is a film which, well, extracts the urine to use the polite phrase. It is a mish-mash of references to some much better teenage films of late – I saw parts of 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Cruel Intentions, Bring It On, The Breakfast Club, Never Been Kissed, American Pie and many more reproduced here, shoved together into a basic storyline.
Set at John Hughes High School, each and every student shown fits into a stereotype from at least one film. There’s Jake, the popular Jock, and Austin, the cocky blond guy. Janey is the nerd who Jake is bet to transform into prom queen – the most unlikely girl in school for the role until you take off her glasses and un-pin her hair, at which point she becomes gorgeous. Heard this somewhere before? Trying to stop Jake in his task are evil Catherine, his sister desperate to bed him and Priscilla, the blond bitchy cheerleader. To carry the story on (because removing a pair of specks can’t fill up 90 minutes, no matter how hard you try), we have Areola (nice), the naked foreign exchange student, Malik, the token black guy, several weirdoes and desperate virgins and of course the odd perfect girl and blatantly old undercover reporter. Through in some typical red-necks, mix with the odd pathetic geek and set a prom for the finale, and you have the mother of all teen-movies.
I saw this film because I had a free ticket, a free afternoon, and a need to stop surfing, at least for a couple of hours ;-) It was just as bad as I thought it would be, but at the same time, you couldn’t help laughing. Most of the jokes were either kiddie humour (a particular scene with an exploding toilet and lots of poo sticks in my mind) or universal (and not all that PC – disabled people, fat people, black people all got made fun of) but to get the most from the film, you really have to have spent the last few years watching teenage flicks. I went with two friends who normally prefer horror / period / thriller films, and they just didn’t get it.
Apart from the odd cameo appearance – from Melissa Joan Hart and the original brat packer Molly Ringwald – the cast is made up of mainly unknowns. A quick flick over to imdb.com and I found that although most have been in things before, it was usually only in bit parts in films, or still-exclusive-to-America TV shows like the everso inspiredly named “That 80s Show”. The only face I recognized from the main cast was Lacey Chabert from Party of 5, playing Amanda, the wonderful girl three of the younger guys are desperate to bone.
Story aside, it is a good film. The soundtrack’s spot on, and features everyone from Marilyn Manson for the grungy teenage angst moments to Phantom Planet for the weepy reunion scenes. The scenery is also funky – no expense spared here, with a polished school, the collapsing at a moment’s notice tumbledown shacks and the posh fancy hotel. The characters are also well played being lovely and OTT when it’s required.
It’s directed by Joel Gallen and written by Mike Bender, Adam Jay Epstein, Andrew Jacobson (II) and Phil Beauman, Buddy Johnson - see all those people and they still couldn’t come up with an original storyline, although not surprisingly if you look at their resumes where Scary Movie and the MTV movie awards seem to be the main features.
Overall it’s not a serious film, it’s not all that good a film, but it is funny. I came out peeing my pants (metaphorically speaking, children) but then maybe I’d just had to much diet coke and pick and mix. I’m giving it 3 stars because I’m in an indecisive mood. I would say go and see it and make up your own mind, but you probably shouldn’t. There were 7 others in the screen with us (a screen which, incidentally, was about as big as a widescreen TV – you know who you are screen 4 at Oxford Rd Odeon, you), and 2 walked out half way through. To be fair though, they were about 75 years old, so I think they got lost. And respect to them for staying that long and putting up with the lesbian kisses, huge naked tits and rug-munching references. You won’t like it if you’re over 20, and it’s a 15 so you won’t get in if you’re under that – if you’re in that remaining age bracket then give it a go, perhaps, possibly, if there’s nothing else on, but don’t say I didn’t warn you….
Advantages: Funny, Relives Some Classic Teen Movie Moments. Disadvantages: Gross!
...Well a spoof comedy called not another teen movie. I love teen movies and can enjoy any! So I had to see what the spoof was going to be like en it! Well I did enjoy it but this is one gross movie! So finally here is a movie making fun out of my favourite type of movie genre (if you can call it a genre).
There are so many classic teen movies out there and this movie manages to poke fun at most of them! The Story~~
The story begins with Janey Briggs ... ...and wears glasses, oh and not forgetting paint covered overalls, this instantly places her into the unpopular category. Anyway the students all attend John Hughes high school (what an appropriate name for a teen movie high school!)
Anyway Jake Wyler (Zack Siler – She’s all that) has just been dumped by his head cheerleader girlfriend Priscilla (Taylor Vaughn – She’s all that/Torrence Shipman – Bring it on). She dumps him for the beautiful weirdo ...

...follow. This was not one of those times. Proving once and again that my best mate was indeed dropped on his head while young, the sole motivation for seeing this film was found in the poster for the film - vision of the Token Black Guy, arms folded and in lackadaisical pose, with huge Token Black Guy grin plastered across his visage. According to my friend, you could stand there for hours on end, admiring said pose and breaking out into gales of ... ...The basic premise of Not Another Teen Movie is quite simple: slag, parody and slander all the other teen movies which have come before it. There are so many obvious references to past teenybopper movies from bygone times that I can scarce remember them all. From what remains of a hole-studded memory, though, come glimpes and allusions of and to She's All That, Never Been Kissed, American Pie, Bring It On, Cruel Intentions and any movie involving ...

...it still has charm (maybe not the appropriate word). I was actually surprised that I enjoyed it and actually watched it three times because there were two commentaries on the dvd (one cast and one crew). Before I go on here is a quick character rundown
The characters are simple, all with their own special role in the high school:
''The pretty ugly girl'' Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) ~ She's the unique rebel a.k.a the geek with glasses a ponytail ... ...much worse...Janey Briggs. Not only does she wear glasses and a ponytail she has paint on her clothes mainly due to her artistic expression (turning out to be at the level of a five year old).
On his quest to do this surly impossible task Jake (the popular jock) is being pursued by his incest crazy family. His sister who is the cruellest girl in school wants him bad, while his dad has set him up with the perfect woman, his mum. Then there’s the ...

...conceived idea about whether or not I am going to enjoy the film. 'Not Another Teen Movie' was a film I was convinced I was going to hate. I loved the first few films in this genre such as 'Scream', and even the first 'Scary Movie', but then there were too many poor releases such as 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer', and the sequel to 'Scary Movie' to name just a few. The humour was just too much like the 'Airplane' films, and when it is that ... ...films chosen to parody were not as obvious as they have been in other releases.
The storyline of the film is a mismatch of plotlines from films such as 'She's All That', 'Bring It On', 'American Beauty', 'Cruel Intentions' and two of my all time favourite films, 'Pretty In Pink' and 'The Breakfast Club'. The humour is still in your face, but a lot of the jokes are more subtle, which for me made the childish humour much more bearable. The film is ...

...already own the DVD of Not Another Teen Movie, out in the USA before it was here in the cinema. I can definitely recommend this film. Not a deep and meaningful storyline so not really one to take someone on a romantic date but plenty of laughs all the way through.
Before I start on the storyline I have to mention the cast. You will not recognise anyone in this films, with the exception of Mr T who has the one scene. A cast of complete fresh faces ... ...Played by Chris Evans (no, not the ginger one). This is the bloke everyone loves, including himself.
The Cocky Blond Guy (Austin)
The bloke who is always right and makes sure that everyone knows it.

The ugly duckling that turns into the swan
The Nasty Cheerleader (Priscilla)
Head cheerleader who hates everyone prettier than her

Advantages: It's actually funny and clever. Disadvantages: There's not funny and dumb things too.
We've seen what Scary Movie can do to the horror genre, 4 bloody times, but when director Joel Gallen took on spoofing the teen genre in NotAnotherTeenMovie nobody seemed to want to know about it.
I found this film to have instant appeal, with actually being a fan of American Pie and of course, good looking cheerleaders. It's very rewatchable as well, although the last time I watched it the film did feel as 5 years dated as it actually is.
For a main story we see the Popular Jock (Jake) trying to transform the Pretty Ugly Girl (Janey) into Prom Queen for a bet, whilst his ex-girlfriend the Nasty Cheerleader is going to the Prom with the Beautiful Weirdo. Sounds very typical teenmovie, right?
Well the catch is that Jake's sister is transforming Janey for him, but in return she wants to sleep with him. "That is whack," as ...

For a Comedy this has to be one of the most un funny films i have ever watched, i think there were maybe one or two bits of this film that made me laugh, and they were on par with the parts of a comedy which you wouldnt laugh at in comparison to the rest of the film. This was ment to be another one of those funny teenmovies when all it actually amounted to be was a flop. i wouldnt reccomend this movie to anyone who is a true lover of comedy. i have seen all of the scary movie films and the others teen comedies like 'NotanotherTeenMovie' etc and i did find those funny but this one is a dvd that i would never add to me greatly growing collection. Its the sort of film that when you start watching it it is so bad you want to carry on watching just in the hope that something funny might actually happen, but im afraid it does not. Anyone ...

"...A happy, nasty and frequently hilarious assault on 20 years' worth of youth pictures..." (New York Times, p.E31, 14/12/2001)
DVD Description
In his feature film directorial debut, Joel Gallen spoofs the ever-popular teen genre. The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks, including SHE'S ALL THAT, AMERICAN PIE, TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, VARSITY BLUES, and SIXTEEN CANDLES, to name just a few. The most popular boy, Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh)--the poor, smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks--prom queen. Meanwhile, her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he's ever seen when he's not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course, a teen movie wouldn't be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain, a lovestruck best friend, and a foreign exchange student, all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s, along with remakes of songs from the same films--and even some word-for-word dialogue--and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for THE BREAKFAST CLUB, CRUEL INTENTIONS, and PRETTY IN PINK.
