In short - worldy wise advertising exec gets caught in Cold War mistaken identity scenario, then gets framed for murder committed in front of dozens of people in the United Nations HQ. Travels to various picturesque locations around the United States, gets involved with the Secret Service, the head of a shadowy organisation who believes him to be a secret agent and falls for the love interest who just happens to be working for both of the latter.
'Ordinary' wouldnt be the description I'd give the plot, plain unbelievable maybe: how does a man photographed with a murder weapon in his hand travel across America with his picture plastered all over the newspapers and in important public places with only a pair of large Jackie O sunglasses as a disguise?
Countless other points come to mind too but nonetheless NBNW is a peerless example of the comedy thriller that never ceases to entertain and amuse. Cary Grant is the reason this film works so well, the rest of the cast are mere players in comparison. He was in his mid fifties when this came out but for me was at the zenith of his powers, sophisticated, languid, very witty and always in control even when facing adversity and great odds. Roger Thornhill is the epitome of all his roles, in command but always able to raise an exasperated eyebrow at the antics of his mother. James Mason stands out as the sophisticated uber-villian, polite and genteel, but with an elegant but sinister turn of phrase.
Originally the makers of the first Bond movie wanted Grant to play 007 and from this film you can certainly understand why. This was made a few years before Doctor No but has the same sauve sophistication, masterful (yet self effacing) hero, eyecatching backdrops, entertaining and amusing plot. But from a gentler time when CG, guns and girls were not what it was all about.
The makers of 'XXX' could learn a lot from watching this.
