I did enjoy this drama series, especially this first series. It documents in a soap tv kind of way life in america for the rich and how they tolerated slavery before the civil war. I can not claim to know everything about slavery in the US but North and South does not cover it up nor does it condemn it outright. It just portrays how slavery was without modern retrospect. Like a primary source would and I would hope this is what the writer was aiming for. However, this issue is but a subplot overall. The series focuses on two main characters and their families living in a turbulant time in american history- Orry Main, a southern farm owners son and George Hazard - a northern factory owners son. The first series details how they both met, their experiences together at West Point Militery Academy and then afterwards during the Mexican war. It is much like an English soap in some respects as there are 'evil' characters and inherently good characters. Love, sex, violence and politics are all covered. The acting is good with some reputable actors added in. For example, Patrick Swayze as Orry Main and Kirstie Alley as Virgilia Hazard. The DVD leaves the characters at the brink of the American Civil War to be continued in series 2 of North and South. (Altogether there are 3 series - all based on the books by John Jakes). I found it enjoyable, something good to watch whilst doing something else on a lazy day.
