turbulent 1960s ('The Times They are a-Changin') and sprawling, stream-of-consciousness litanies that irrevocably changed the face of rock music ('Like a Rolling Stone'), the years between 1961-1966 were inarguably the most artistically fertile for legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan. Director Martin Scorsese who had previously worked with Dylan on the Band's farewell concert film THE LAST WALTZ (1978) crafts an unprecedented exploration of the musician's creative process during this crucial five-year period with the historical PBS documentary event NO DIRECTION HOME. Part of PBS's AMERICAN MASTERS series, the film is the first ever film biography of the enigmatic, near-reclusive Dylan, who grants Scorsese his first full-length interview in 20 years for a startlingly intimate and endlessly revealing portrait of a true American icon. Bookended by his early days in the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene and the 1966 motorcycle accident that nearly claimed his life, Dylan's exclusive interview is supplemented with a wealth of archival footage that includes personal home movies from his childhood in Minnesota; unreleased interviews with colleagues Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Maria Muldaur; and rare live performances of classics like 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' In addition, the Bob Dylan Archives opens its extensive film, tape, and stills collection for never-before-seen concert and television appearances (including the infamous 'electric' set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival), outtakes from D.A. Pennebaker's acclaimed 1967 documentary DON'T LOOK BACK, and more. The result is a richly visual counterpart to Dylan's best-selling memoir CHRONICLES: VOLUME 1 that stands as a cinematic testament to the life and work of one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century.

When I bought this DVD from Amazon at the modest price of 14.99, I thought that it would simply be a compilation of historical songs of Dylan.
However, having watched it, I found that what it presented was a journey of discovery that goes back to the late 50's, and shows the music that was part and parcel of this great artists' background, and the influences that made the artist what he is today.
Interestingly enough, the DVD was comparable to a series that I have been watching on the BBC about the roots of folk music in the UK, and was an interesting contrast, in that it covered the same timescale though from an American perspective.
Dylan comes over in the DVD as articulate and reasonably well educated although it appears that most of his education was from his experiences in the sixties, mingling with artists and poets alike in a kind of rebellion against society, and against what was happening in the world outside of that small group of artists and poets, fighting for individuality, whilst retaining something of the original enigma of what was Folk Music, and deep rooted rhythme and lyricism probably at the best and most formative time in the history of America.
Dylan recounts his experiences with Woodie Guthrie, and his original style was in the same gendre, and was recognised as such by all who saw him perform. In England, however, the reception that he got was mixed. The public liked his original works, although when he strayed from what the British public saw as his "norm", they were slow to catch onto the fact that the new music that Bob Dylan was creating was in fact the birth of the evolution of his own individuality and the finding of a style that was "Bob Dylan". Here, I find that the interviews and commentary are articulate and interesting and keep the viewer entertained as well as educating them from the American viewpoint.
Born in a small backwater town in Minnesota, his journey into the cafe society of Greenwich Village saw the turning point in his career, and the formation of an artist that established his way of presenting words and music in a powerful and individual way that opened up the doors to his successful career.
The footage on the two DVD's was interesting because director Martin Scorsese has taken the story from the very roots of the childhood of Dylan through the years that developed the style we now know now, and the clips that are shown of the music that influenced Dylan as a musician are extraordinary, and show music that many of the british public will never have seen before, being music that was rooted in the States.
Interestingly enough footage is taken from live television performances and interviews, and live concerts from Liverpool, London and the Newport Folk Festival. I was a little disappointed that the Isle of Wight was not featured, but this journey was more about the development of the artist, rather than a whole load of clips from concerts.
The DVD is produced by Apple in association with other companies and I believe that the complexity was dealt with neatly, making the viewer understand a little better how the style of Dylan developed. It's exempt from classification because its content does not conflict with any age group watching it, although here, I would think that the best age group or the more suitable audience would be those who were brought up with Dylan, or those going on a new discovery into the past in order to enhance their musical awareness.
For those who prefer listening to viewing, there is actually a CD released now of the Bootlegs, although to me, listening would not have given me half of the enjoyment that the DVD did, opening my eyes to a musical history that I was unaware of, during the years 1959-1966.
Being on two separate DVD's this is an ideal purchase for anyone who is interested in musical history, and in particular, from an American point of view.
The extras that come with the DVD are limited to an unused promotional spot "Positively 4th street", and "I can't leave her behind" which was a work in progress filmed in Glasgow in 1966.
It will be interesting to see if there is a follow up to this DVD, as I would like to see more recent history as well as that shown on this DVD and think it would make the collection complete.
As for whether I would recommend it. Well I certainly would. It is a suberb insight into the history of a man who has become a lengend in his own time.
Full Frame Aspect viewing in colour pleases me, and with a runtime of 240 minutes can be split into two viewings.

Advantages: Masterfully edited, full of astounding footage both familiar and otherwise...a classic. Disadvantages: None.
...rarely-seen footage and interview material, No Direction Home is, for the first half at least, as much about America in the pause-for-breath moment between the beat writers of the 1950s and the counter-culture student movements of the mid-to-late 1960s as it is about the life and work of Robert Zimmerman. It is - clichéd as it sounds - a sweeping, engrossing portrait of a time and of a place, scouring the terrain leads from the rattle-tattle zap-pow ... ...of Odetta's acoustic guitar, from the wandering shoes of Neil Cassidy to those of Woody Guthrie.
Dylan features heavily throughout this section of the film, of course, but he is very much a character-in-the-making. When he does take centre-stage in time for the second half (the film is, incidentally, almost four hours long), it is via some of the most compelling footage available, some of it assumed lost or destroyed.
A talking heads documentary ...

No direction home is an extraordinary DVD covering the world famous singer/songwriter Bob Dylan from a young age to today. It shows what life was like with Dylan, and how he coped with his supporters, and those who held him in a lower esteem. The storyline continues by showing Dylan getting older, and how he thought up some of his best known songs, such as Rolling Stone. It also covers his change from acoustic guitar to electric guitar with a backing band, and how some folk music fans took to this. No direction home covers Bob's personality, showing him annoying and baffling reporters ...

Advantages: Interview footage with Dylan and scenes from D.A. Pennebaker documentary Disadvantages: not many special features
I have been a fan of Dylan's music for awhile, but I've never been the sort of music fan who feels the need to know all about the artists who make the music I like. That said I was strolling around Sainsbury's about a month ago and happened by the DVD section - this one caught my eye and I decided to pick it up as it was only £7.99 for 2 discs. I settled in to watch it one rainy evening and was instantly engrossed - I'd never seen footage of Dylan ... ...convey just how young he was when he hit it big. The DVD is a series of clips of interviews with Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Allen Ginsberg, and others who knew Dylan when he was starting out in Greenwich Village, intermingled with footage from D.A. Pennebaker's older Dylan documentary and clips of musicians who had an influence on Dylan's music. Intertwined with all these Scorcesse begins with and continues to return to Dylan's tour of England ...

Advantages: its one of the best dvds i have bought Disadvantages: nothing
The first time I heard Bob Dylan was in the wonder boys soundtrack ' Things have changed'. I loved it. There was something in his music which struck a chord. I didnot follow up on this artist, when I saw the documentary on the television. I was quite pleased to know, there are people in this world for whom passion is a singular direction in life. I have been told by many people, that I do not do justice to my work, I took their advice. But after ... ...but I feel I have some of his spirit in myself. It tells about the influences, his contemporaries had on him, but how far ahead he was from them. One statement from the documentary stands out in my mind,' you are always in the process of being made, the longer you remain in that state, the better it is for you.' Thank you Bob for your music, and thank you Martin Scorsese for such a fantastic documentary. ...
