take of "Like a Rolling Stone" less than seven years later, the fifth release in the Bob Dylan Bootleg series (and the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's Dylan documentary of the same name) proffers just how far the folk idol turned rock star had come between his last year in a Minnesota high school and 1966's contentious UK tour. The double CD is sequenced chronologically and features 26 rare and unreleased recordings (most between 1961 and 1966), including 1959's muddied "When I Got Troubles,' reportedly the first song Dylan ever put to tape, and Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," performed live soon after Dylan's arrival in New York. While the usual suspects are present--"Don't Think Twice It's Alright," "Masters of War," "Mr. Tambourine Man"--this collection unravels the unexpected, including an outtake from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan ("Sally Gal"), captivating alternate takes of "She Belongs To Me," "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" and "Visions of Johanna" (with full band) and the ripping electric version of "Maggie's Farm" that throttled the 1965 Newport Folk Festival and carried Dylan over the genre-influencing threshold into generation-altering icon status. --Scott Holter
Advantages: Sharing musical history from an American Viewpoint. Disadvantages: None at all.
When I bought this DVD from Amazon at the modest price of 14.99, I thought that it would simply be a compilation of historical songs of Dylan.
However, having watched it, I found that what it presented was a journey of discovery that goes back to the late 50's, and shows the music that was part and parcel of this great artists' background, and the influences that made the artist what he is today.
Interestingly enough, the DVD was comparable to ... ...about the roots of folk music in the UK, and was an interesting contrast, in that it covered the same timescale though from an American perspective. Dylan comes over in the DVD as articulate and reasonably well educated although it appears that most of his education was from his experiences in the sixties, mingling with artists and poets alike in a kind of rebellion against society, and against what was happening in the world outside of that small ...

Advantages: Live Dylan performances Disadvantages: not many extras
No direction home is an extraordinary DVD covering the world famous singer/songwriter Bob Dylan from a young age to today. It shows what life was like with Dylan, and how he coped with his supporters, and those who held him in a lower esteem. This is a unique opportunity to discover everything there is to know about one of the greatest folk singers that has ever lived.
No direction home starts by presenting Dylan at a young age, speaking to his ... ...normally, and the producers of no direction home have clearly had their work cut out finding so many.
The storyline continues by showing Dylan getting older, and how he thought up some of his best known songs, such as Rolling Stone. It also covers his change from acoustic guitar to electric guitar with a backing band, and how some folk music fans took to this. No direction home covers Bob's personality, showing him annoying and baffling reporters ...

Advantages: Interview footage with Dylan and scenes from D.A. Pennebaker documentary Disadvantages: not many special features
I have been a fan of Dylan's music for awhile, but I've never been the sort of music fan who feels the need to know all about the artists who make the music I like. That said I was strolling around Sainsbury's about a month ago and happened by the DVD section - this one caught my eye and I decided to pick it up as it was only £7.99 for 2 discs. I settled in to watch it one rainy evening and was instantly engrossed - I'd never seen footage of Dylan ... ...convey just how young he was when he hit it big. The DVD is a series of clips of interviews with Dylan, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Allen Ginsberg, and others who knew Dylan when he was starting out in Greenwich Village, intermingled with footage from D.A. Pennebaker's older Dylan documentary and clips of musicians who had an influence on Dylan's music. Intertwined with all these Scorcesse begins with and continues to return to Dylan's tour of England ...

What an artist!! Review ofNo Direction Home: Bob Dylan DVDby
drpmulay
Advantages: its one of the best dvds i have bought Disadvantages: nothing
The first time I heard Bob Dylan was in the wonder boys soundtrack ' Things have changed'. I loved it. There was something in his music which struck a chord. I didnot follow up on this artist, when I saw the documentary on the television. I was quite pleased to know, there are people in this world for whom passion is a singular direction in life. I have been told by many people, that I do not do justice to my work, I took their advice. But after ... ...but I feel I have some of his spirit in myself. It tells about the influences, his contemporaries had on him, but how far ahead he was from them. One statement from the documentary stands out in my mind,' you are always in the process of being made, the longer you remain in that state, the better it is for you.' Thank you Bob for your music, and thank you Martin Scorsese for such a fantastic documentary. ...

Advantages: Excellent value for money Disadvantages: Will distract you from anything else you've got planned
No Direction home is the most informative and fascinating biography of Bob Dylan. It explores his life and work in depth from the early days to the present time. There is plenty of interesting and informative commentary from the man himself. We hear his views on all aspects of his work, for instance the change from accoustic to electric. He comments on film footage of the famous cry of "Judas" in Manchester Free Trade Hall, followed by his sardonic ... ...There is plenty of live footage which I've never seen before. For example scenes where Joan Baez sings in Bob's apartment while he works on his latest masterpiece and interviews with one time girlfriend Suzy Rotolo. If you were a fan of Dylan in the sixties you will be riveted by this DVD. I bought it for my husband for his birthday and I didn't get a word out of him for the rest of the day. ...

Genre: Documentaries & Biographies - Entertainment Documentary
Classification: Exempt
Production Year: 2005
Running Time: 4 hours
Video Category: Television
Plot: Spawning both politically charged folk ballads that came to embody the very spirit of the turbulent 1960s ('The Times They are a-Changin') and sprawling, stream-of-consciousness litanies that irrevocably changed the face of rock music ('Like a Rolling Stone'), the years between 1961-1966 were inarguably the most artistically fertile for legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan. Director Martin Scorsese who had previously worked with Dylan on the Band's farewell concert film THE LAST WALTZ (1978) crafts an unprecedented exploration of the musician's creative process during this crucial five-year period with the historical PBS documentary event NO DIRECTION HOME. Part of PBS's AMERICAN MASTERS series, the film is the first ever film biography of the enigmatic, near-reclusive Dylan, who grants Scorsese his first full-length interview in 20 years for a startlingly intimate and endlessly revealing portrait of a true American icon. Bookended by his early days in the legendary Greenwich Village folk scene and the 1966 motorcycle accident that nearly claimed his life, Dylan's exclusive interview is supplemented with a wealth of archival footage that includes personal home movies from his childhood in Minnesota; unreleased interviews with colleagues Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Maria Muldaur; and rare live performances of classics like 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' In addition, the Bob Dylan Archives opens its extensive film, tape, and stills collection for never-before-seen concert and television appearances (including the infamous 'electric' set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival), outtakes from D.A. Pennebaker's acclaimed 1967 documentary DON'T LOOK BACK, and more. The result is a richly visual counterpart to Dylan's best-selling memoir CHRONICLES: VOLUME 1 that stands as a cinematic testament to the life and work of one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century.
