This DVD was reccomended to me by a stall holder at a car boot sale last weekend, and yes he was the stallholder who was selling it! At just £1.00 I decided to give it a go as I am a big Tommy Lee Jones fan.
Cast
Made by Paramount Vantage and Miramax Films, written and directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, adapted from the novel by Cormac McCarthy and starring:
Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Ed Tom Bell Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss Woody Harrelson as Carson Wells Kelly Macdonald as Carla Jean Moss Garret Dillahunt as Deputy Wendell Tess Harper as Lorretta Bell Barry Corbin as Ellis Beth Grant as Carla Jean's mother
Storyline
Based in rural Texas, welder and hunter Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) goes out hunting and comes across the remains of several drug dealers who have apperently killed each other in a drug deal gone wrong in the middle of the dessert. He has alook around and finds everyone is dead apart from the driver of one of the trucks, who is on his last legs. In the back of this truck is a huge stash of heroin. He finds a blood trail and roughly follows it to find another member of one of the two gangs dead under a tree, he is carrying a case with two million dollars in it, rather than report the matter to the police Llewelyn decides to keep the money for himself.
Llewelyn takes the money back to his trailer park home, but he can't sleep and decides to go back to the scene of the shoot - out that night and take some water for the wounded man. He parks his truck at the top of a hill overlooking the site, and walks down to have another look at the carnage. On checking the truck again he finds the wounded man is dead from a gunshot to the head, the heroin has gone also, then he looks up at his own truck and sees some men moving around and another truck, they start shooting at him and chase after him but he manages to get away, unfortunately they now know who he is as he leaves his truck behind and they, quite rightly, suspect him of having their two million dollars. Another unfortunate problem for Llewelyn is that 'they' is in fact a psychopathic killer named Anton Chigurh, who is hot on his trail dispassionately murdering nearly every rival, bystander and even employer in his pursuit of Llewelyn Moss and his money.
Llewelyn gets back to his trailer and sends his wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald) off to her mothers, he then sets off on the run from Anton, with the two million dollars. Tommy Lee Jones appears as the Sheriff in charge of the investigation into the shoot - out, as the police have now discovered the drug massacre also, and he joins the trail. Woody Harrelson also turns up briefly as Carson Wells, a bounty hunter, hired by business man Stephen Root to control the 'situation' with Chigurh. This is the start of a violent, bloody chase to Mexico.
Is It Any Good?
Yes, it is. I really enjoyed this film, I thought the story was good and quite believable, and it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through the film. It is the sort of film that is a little slow to get going in a good way, it makes sure you know what is what and has very defined scenes that grip you until the obvious end and then start you off gripped again on the next scene, it has been very well adapted from the book and brought to the screen.
Probably the best thing about this film though, was the acting. All the main actors played their parts to perfection. Tommy Lee Jones was excellent as the Sheriff, a part he has played a few times now and Woody Harrelson was his usual brilliant, extremely watchable self for his brief part as a bounty hunter. The two best parts for me though have to be Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem, having not seen these two actors in anything before I really did not know what to expect of them, but they did not dissapoint and Javier Bardem won a highly deserved Academy Award for best supporting role, for his part as the psychopathic killer, which I though he played very convincingly. Josh Brolin played his part equally well and between them they made this film the great watching success that it was.
In short this film is brilliant, and if you have not watched it already then I highly reccomend seeing it. It might not appeal to evryone, however, as it is quite violent and there is a lot of bloody violence, shooting and death, it has only been classed as a 15 though which I find fairly surprising given the content. I don't want to put people off who do not like violent films though, as I think it is worth trying even if you are one of these people because the storyline is so good. my wife hates violent films and only sat down to watch the first 10 minutes of this one to try it and see how bad it was going to be, she did not think she would be able to get past 10 minutes as it looked too violent, however, she was as glued to the TV as I was. The film is full of twists and turns and some unexpected outcomes and keeps you interested all the way through, and once again I would reccomend it to anyone.

1980s Texas, a desolate landscape, bullet-ridden pickups and an opportunity of a lifetime! $2 million stranded in the wilderness from a drug deal gone wrong. ...succumbed to the draw of No Country for Old Men, simply because it sounds like exactly the sort of film I would enjoy. The fact that it is directed and written by the Coen brothers is neither here nor there for me - I have loved some of their films, particularly Fargo and The Big Lebowski, but hated others, such as Intolerable Cruelty and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Then again, knowing that the story is based on a book by Cormac McCarthy did give ... ...down. Fair enough, but please, no more! Woody Harrelson appears as a man hired to get his hands on the money, and Chigurh, and reminded me just how good an actor he is. He seems to have disappeared into the background over the last few years (the cynical part of me wonders if it is because he's losing his hair - sadly, Hollywood is that superficial), but hopefully his career will take off again as a result of this film. For anyone who wants a bit ...

...this point on I bothered no more. I missed Fargo, Intolerable Cruelty, The Big Lebowski and mercifully Oh Brother Where Art Thou which looked like my idea of a fresh hell; and to be perfectly honest with you I'm not sorry. But something made me want to see No Country For Old Men, from across the pond came the word that No Country For Old Men was THE FILM of the year, and everyone is predicting that Javier Bardem will walk away with the best actor ... ...look at Bardem, there is no denying that his character the evil Anton Chigurh is one of the most ruthless characters played on screen, however there is nothing there than another actor could not have achieved. I'm sure it's relatively easy to act as a killer who smiles or plays mind games as he kills his victims. What Bardem does have is a kind of sinister presence due to his build and size, but in my mind this is no Oscar winning actor. I'm not ...

So as the opening credits role i see that it stars Josh Brolin who i hadn't seen in anything since the Goonies and that it is also directed by the coen brothers who in my opinion are a bit hit and miss, thought Fargo was great and also The Big Lebowski but was very disappointed with 'O Brother, where art thou?' and intolerable cruelty, but was now keen to see there new offering.

"There Are No Clean Getaways"
Having reviewed the Coen Brother's latest offering 'Burn After Reading', I decided it was time to take a look at their previous film 'No Country for Old Men', which promised to be a more brutal and bloody movie and certainly not as playful as the majority of the American directors previous films. Set in Texas, No Country for Old Men tells the story of Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who finds two million dollars in a bag ... ...novel of the same name, No Country For Old Men is defined by some great performances - notably Javier Badrem, who was really the jewel in the crown of a sometimes confusing script. It was the sort of portrayal of a love-to-hate villainous character that could be compared to Heath Ledger's characterization of The Joker.
No Country for Old Men was a decent chase movie with excellent cinematography (again thanks to Roger Deakins) and some great set-pieces. ...

A scorching blast of tense genre filmmaking shot through with rich veins of melancholy, down-home philosophy and dark, dark humor, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN reps a superior match of source material and filmmaking talent (Variety, 22/11/2007)
DVD Description
With NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the Coen Brothers have found a perfect match in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. Their adaptation of McCarthy's praised novel is a staggering masterpiece. In this almost impossibly faithful adaptation, the film takes place in a small Texas border town in 1980. Sheriff Bell (a never-been-better Tommy Lee Jones) has ruled the land for years without the use of a gun, but a new brand of reckless lawlessness has taken over his town. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an innocent Everyman with a devoted wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), but when he stumbles across a drug deal gone deadly and finds two million dollars, he's determined to keep it for himself. There's only one problem. He's being pursued by one of the most amoral, evil psychopaths that the big screen has ever seen. Wearing an absurd haircut and brandishing a pressurized weapon that's used to murder cattle, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) creeps forward on his mission to track Moss down and return the money to its rightful owners to save his own skin. As the tension mounts, the body count begins to rise, confirming Sheriff Bell's inability to battle this new wave of modern brutality.
The most striking thing about the Coen Brothers' thriller is their masterly use of silence to create an almost unbearable level of tension. Cinematographer Roger Deakins is once again at the top of his game, beautifully capturing this stark and lonely world. The well-rounded cast is clearly excited to be a part of such a stellar production--particularly Bardem, whose Chigurh is a freakishly mysterious monster, and is certain to haunt viewers long after the final credit has rolled. In a career filled with striking achievements, this might very well be the Coen Brothers' finest. It is filmmaking at its best.
