Ninja Scroll Box Set (Animated) (Box Set)

Advantages: Tons of gore, good story, fantastic animation
Disadvantages: Not for the weak stomached

...Ninja Scroll holds a special place in my heart, being the first Japanese Anime I've ever seen. After watching it I saw at least another 5 Anime films, and none seemed to come close to Ninja Scroll, which can only mean good things for this film. In brief, it's a story about ninjas. Well what were you expecting, robots? There are also many ninja swords in the film. You get the idea: it's non-stop ninja from start to finish. Also mixed into the film is a touch of fantasy: big nasty things that fight ninjas. By now, unless you're a ninja fan, you've probably gone off the film entirely. And you'd probably right... but there's more to this film than people fighting in their PJs. The animation is fluid and colourful, the characters are unique and there are genuine shock moments throughout the film (mostly due to the gore). Ah, the gore... Read review

Advantages: Great anime action.
Disadvantages: short

...Plot: A wondering samurai (jubei) finds himself fighting demons and trying to find the remedy for a poison, that was inflicted by a crafty old monk. It started when he saved a young ninja girl from being raped by a demon that can turn into stone. After defeating the monster the demons of temon are after revenge and he becomes intangled in the old monks plot. He must defeat the demons of temon in order to survive. As the plot thickens you learn more of jubeis past as a retainer. Review: This film is based on japanese mythology and I would recommend anyone who is interested in mythology to watch this film too. The animation is very well done, the music goes very well with the film. Both the voice acting in japanese and english is very well done. This was the first anime I watched and it got me hooked on animes ever since.... Read review

...Ninja Scroll is one of those timeless Animes, its not one of the great Animes but it is a very entertaining and definitely one you can watch repeatedly rather than watch once and put away forever. Lets start with the basics of the box set (well two discs worth but I suppose it is actually a box set). It contains two versions of the movie, both are digitally remastered, one is the feature in its original format and the other is in widescreen. Both have got Japanese and English dubbing in Dolby 6.1, 5.1 and 2.0, they also come with French and Spanish in 2.0. The featured subtitle languages are English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish. The movie was originally released in 1993 in Japan with its remastering following in 2004.
