I am quite a fan of children’s adventure films as they are usually very good and fun to watch but I have to say that I was very let down by this one. I found the whole storyline and idea was good but it was so unrealistic. Abigail Breslin played the role of Nim and I thought that she did do a fairly good job for a girl of her age but at times she seemed so wooden. I think the best acting she did was with the animals she looked after and loved. I liked the way they interacted and saw that their was a genuine affection for all of them. I found the acting which she did with her father and Alex was hard to watch as there seemed to be no chemistry at all.
The best character in the film for me was Alex Rover who was played by Jodie Foster. This is the first time I have ever really seen her in a light hearted role and I thought she played it very well. I loved the humour which she bought to the film and how she was verging on being crazy. She did work well with Gerard Butler who played the role of her character Alex Rover and they did actually bring a lot to the film. Gerard Butler also played the role of Nim’s Father Jack but he was not in it very much but I did like the small parts which he did do.
The animals which were used in the film were great and I really did like Silkie the seal, for me I think a lot of hard work must have been put into the training of it and I fitted very well into the story, I also found the closeness of the animals to the character of Nim was great.
The special effects in this film were a big let down for me, I was clearly able to tell every time a green screen had been used and it really was not good. All of the backdrops looked fake and the only time I really found it looked real was when the scene was set on the beach. Even when the actors were filming on the island it still all looked fake and as if things had been placed there specifically and it was not how a desert island should have looked. I think the film would have been so much better if more time, money and effort had gone into the special effects. I really cannot remember any of the soundtrack for the film so cannot make comment on it.
The DVD which I have does have some bonus features which include:-
Adventure Commentary with Jodie foster and Abigail Breslin Featurettes - Abigail’s Journey and Working on Water Deleted Scenes
As I was not impressed with this film and not a fan of bonus features I have not watched these so I am not able to make comment on them.
The running time of the film is 1 hour and 32 minutes which I found to be quite long enough and at times I was completely bored with the storyline. The certificate is a universal and I do agree with this. I managed to get this DVD for just 33 in Tesco and I am so glad I did not pay any more for it.
Overall I am going to recommend this film to the younger market, I think children around the age of 8 would really find this film fun and enjoyable. I am not going to recommend it to adults who like children’s adventure films as you will be very disappointed.

Advantages: A diverting film for little kids with some imagination. Disadvantages: A lack of focus and plot holes galore.
...the holes in the plot. Nim's tree-house home looks like a set on a soundstage and the volcano on the island is so badly matted in you can tell it isn't really there. Even when Nim is standing on top of it, the boulders have a distinctly polystyrene look about them. There's even a scene where the heroine catapults a load of lizards ... ...results in three distinct stories; Nim's battle to protect the island from the inhabitants of a cruise ship, Alexandra's fight to overcome her fears and Jack's struggle to get home to Nim. But the subplots are never reconciled, making the film episodic and the pacing stutter as we jump from one story strand to another. There are too many contrivances required to resolve each plot thread, most of which involve Nim's animal friends helping either her ...

Advantages: New spin on an old concept style Disadvantages: Full of plot holes
Nim's Island is a brand new big budget family adventure with its heart set way in the past. With weird almost talking creatures, volcano's, sharks, giant waves, pirates, home alone style traps, and adventurers Nim's Island is almost like a homage to the movies of the 50's and 60's when the ultimate movie fantasy seemed to revolve around living on a desert island.

Advantages: Good central performances, feel-good factor. Disadvantages: Bit slow in places.
One thing you know you?re going to get with Jodi Picoult is a thought-provoking moral dilemma. In this case, the plot revolves around sisters, the younger of which, Anna, played by Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine ? wow!, Nim?sIsland ? yuk!), has been conceived by ivf to provide a medical bank of spare parts for her older sister, Kate, played by Sofia Vassilieva (outstanding performance), who suffers from cancer. This has meant that Anna?s life has been totally dictated by Kate?s needs, and she has never been able to do things she wanted. When, eventually, Kate suffers kidney failure, her mother (Cameron Diaz, doing much better in the role than I would have expected) sets everything up for Anna to donate her kidney. However, Anna refuses and seeks out a top lawyer (Alec Baldwin, nice competent turn), who agrees to work pro ...
MY VIEWS ON THE FILM
I absolubtly loved this film. I own this film on dvd and have watched it several times sine i bought the dvd. It has a great storyline to it and has great actors in the film aswell. Abigail Breslin who stared in little miss sunshine, NimsIsland and Peter pan 2 makes the film more interesting. This film has a great soundtrack to it and uses the music well to go with the film at the right time. It uses the appropiate music and nothing to sinical. It is a heart warming and funny film. It is certified as a 12. This film was released on dvd june 24th 2008 but i didn't buy this film until December time 2008. I bought this film from Tesco at £8 and this film will last a long time. An eye-filling and heart-warming story (Chicago Sun-Times, 04/04/2008)
DVD Description
Based on the popular children's novel of the same name by Wendy Orr, NIM'S ISLAND follows the adventures of Nim Rusoe (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE's Abigail Breslin), a spirited young girl who lives on a remote island with her scientist dad, Jack (300's Gerard Butler), and a host of animal companions, including an iguana, a sea lion, and a sea turtle. Nim's idyllic life gets shaken up, however, when her father goes missing while on an ocean outing. Seeking help to find Jack, Nim contacts her favourite literary hero, explorer Alex Rover (also played by Butler), who, in reality, is uptight--and distinctly unadventurous--author Alexa Rover (Jodie Foster). Against her better judgment, Alexa journeys to Nim's faraway home, setting a series of thrilling and funny moments in motion. Directed and written (in part) by the husband/wife team of Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, NIM'S ISLAND revels in its fanciful premise. While Breslin and Butler are charming, the real revelation is witnessing the oft-serious Foster ham it up in a role requires plenty of slapstick, fish-out-of-water moments. Children and adults alike are likely to enjoy the giddy mood found in NIM'S ISLAND.
