Tales of the Arabian Nights in Musical Form

Advantages: Gorgeous Melodies, Exciting, Storytelling Piece and all around Beautiful Music
Disadvantages: None

********************************** The Composer (briefly) of Sheherazade ********************************** Originally, Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov was not going to pursue music, instead leaning towards a naval career. While he did indeed go on to work in the Navy, first going to the Navel Cadet College in St. Petersburg and then sailing as a midshipman on a 2 and a half year long cruise starting in 1862, music was a major force in his life. He had shown some musical ability even as a very small child. Just before he set out on the cruise in 1862 he met a man named Balakirev who was a great influence on him (and many other famous musicians of that time), this influence increased upon his return. He found that on shore there was more time for music and he started writing some of his early compositions. Rimsky-Korsakov ...

Review of Rimsky-Korsakov: Sheherazade

On the streets of Philadelphia

Advantages: Excellent performances, story and sound track
Disadvantages: None

making to have challenged so many people to confront their own prejudices and ignorance. Dealing with the highly provocative subject of homosexuality and AIDS, Philadelphia does an excellent job of disbanding many of the myths surrounding both of the subjects. Not only does Philadelphia tell a powerful story of injustice, it is also a beautifully shot film, which has many scenes which will tug at your heart strings. It also allowed Tom Hanks to demonstrate that he was more than capable of performing serious roles as he had previously been better known for his comedy roles. There were some critics who suggested that Hanks was not convincing as a homosexual, what did they expect a bloke wearing lipstick, lycra and high heals. Part of the beauty of the film was that it attempted to destroy society's stereotypes of how homosexuals looked and acted ...

Review of Philadelphia (DVD)

Philadelphia

Advantages: A beautiful story
Disadvantages: Just a shame it happens for real

This is one of the most beautiful films I have seen. I went to the cinema with my mum and dad to see it when it first came out. We didnt really know what to expect but were amazed and touched by what we saw. The story very simply is about Tom Hank's character who is gay and is sadly diagnosed with HIV and the effects of this at his work. The cast play their parts quite wonderfully from Tom Hanks playing the part of a man full of life who begins to get sick and eventually passes away to Denvel Washington who is the homophobic lawyer who soon changes his beliefs when he views life from a homophobic perspective. The ending is one of the saddest I've seen with a simple showing of the video of the young Tom Hanks with Philadelphia by Paul Simon playing over the top. If it doesnt bring you to tears I dont know what will ...
