Its central story tells of an ancient war between the forces of good and evil. On one side we have the Night Watch, who ... ...Anton, is part of the Night Watch. The film starts with his discovery that he is an Other, complete with a special gift and a taste for blood (it seems all these Others drink blood - I'm presuming that means they're vampires). It then moves on 12 years to present day Moscow, and he is paired up with a woman called Olga, who occasionally turns into an owl, in order to fight this woman from the Day Watch, or something.

Its central story tells of an ancient war between the forces of good and evil. On one side we have the Night Watch, who protect the light in the world, and on the other is the Day Watch, who fight for darkness (surely it should be the other way round, I thought). Both armies are made up of special beings called Others, who can move into a kind of mystical parallel world, called The Gloom.
Oh, and according to an ancient prophecy, one day, an important Other will be born who has the opportunity to decide which side he takes, and whichever choice he makes will tip the world in that side's favour.
Our protagonist, Anton, is part of the Night Watch.
I'm going to stop the plot summary there, because even I'm getting confused. Night Watch doesn't make much sense. I know it's a fantasy film, it can take a few liberties in the realism department, but still… it's not that it's overly confusing; you can tell what's going on at all times, it's just that's it's all a bit wacky.
But hey, it's an action/sci-fi film, so what it lacks in story it more than makes up for in style. Night Watch is one of the best-looking films I've seen for ages. It doesn't boast spectacular CGI set-pieces, and apparently it was done on a very modest budget (only about $5 million), but it contains a whole load of camera trickery, which in many ways is more interesting than CGI.
Particularly in the first fifteen minutes of the film - the scene with the witch lady and the one where the Others are telling him about who they are - these contain lots of excellent editing and weird, hallucinogenic images blending into each other. It's quite a strange experience.
Also, I must make a point about the subtitles. Normally, subtitles just sit at the bottom in white writing, telling you what is being said. In Night Watch, they are actually part of the film - for a start they appear in different colours, mostly a blood red for particular emphasis. They also sometimes die away away in the style of a gas diffusing; gradually fade in and out as people say the words, and even appear all over the screen like in a comic strip. I suppose this was specially done for the audience abroad, which shows they've put a lot of effort into it.
However, there are times when the visual style does become… well, too stylish. There are a couple of Lord of the Rings-style battle sequences, and as is the growing trend these days, they are cut and edited so quickly that it is hard to tell what's going on. Instead of adding to the excitement, when you can't see what it is each shot before they take it away again, it actually loses your attention.
I thought the tone of the film was just right - it's quite dense and meaty, but it's not too philosophical in the style of Matrix Reloaded, and it's stopped from becoming a drag by the frequent, high-octane action scenes. To be fair, there's hardly any humour or light relief, but it struck a good balance between serious and silly.
It's also worth pointing out that Night Watch is just the first part of a trilogy. The second film, Day Watch, has been released already (I think) and the third film, called Dusk Watch (now that's just lame - what's next? Springwatch?) should be out sometime in the next two years. I read that because they're becoming more Hollywood-style and being financed by Fox Studios, the third film is going to be filmed in English and set in America! I hope this is just speculation!
Anyway, because it's the first part in a trilogy, although the main plot of the film is finished off, there's one major plot strand which is left to be continued. I thought this was done well - making it enjoyable both as part of a larger story and as a standalone film.
Overall, I would recommend Night Watch, although it's obviously going to appeal to a fairly small audience. Its gory violence and undeniable cool-ness makes it great for young persons, but the fact it's in Russian with subtitles will put some people off (but don't let them - as I said earlier, they're cool in their own right!)
If you liked any of the three films I mentioned at the start, you should like Night Watch! Ignore the weird plot and the silliness, and it's an action movie that's fresh, exciting and surprisingly thoughtful. ____________________________________________________________ _______

NIGHT WATCH is a much anticipated, dark, and dizzyingly stylised fantasy film from Russia. It tells of how there was once a great war between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. The aesthetic of cool is ripped-off wholesale from "The Matrix", making the most of long coats and sunglasses, but somewhat undermined by the Russian penchant for woolly pullies. Advantages: Excellent speech at the end. Disadvantages: Plot seems quite empty.
A friend recommended this film to me as we are both huge Stephen King fans. I purchased the DVD off the internet last night and watched it this morning. The plot consists of a student called Jonathan Jackson setting out on a journey to visit his dying mother in hospital. While watching the film you're never quite sure what is real and what is reality as the character keeps recreating his visions throughout the film. The plot seems fairly empty as not a lot happens but it still manages to keep you gripped throughout. By far my favorite part of the film would be the speech at the end as touches on many Philosophical points and is bound to bring a tear to your eye.
I have watched nearly all film adaptations of Stephen Kings books and this is by far in my top 5. ...

I am Sam is an absolutely amazing film!!! A real tearjeaker and an ideal dvd for those nights in with the girlies.
I watched this film, starring Sean Penn and Michelle pfeiffer, the other week with a friend, and although very depressing and very sad in places, it is also full of amusing moments and happy times!!!
Penn plays a mentally hanicapped father fighting for the right of custody of his seven year old daughter, played by Dakota Fanning, who is absolutely adorable. She plays the role with such depth and her devotion to the part is clear to see with such intensity to realism. Pfeiffer plays the top lawyer who takes pity on the struggling father and helps in his fight to get his daughter back from her foster parents.
A must see!!! ...

Advantages: Good acting and gore, original premise Disadvantages: Underdeveloped story and characters
Just watched this last night on DVD and, no, I'm not going to say I want my life back, neither that it is a masterpiece. The acting is quite good and it's maybe the best thing about the movie, although the charachters were a bit underwritten.
The plants were kind of an unusual horror villain, and it is for me a good variation on the human vs. nature theme. Some of the actions of the characters didn't ring true or believable, but, for gore enthusiasts, there are some fine scenes that can make even hardened horror fan cringe so it's worth checking it out.
All in all, don't expect a life changing experience, just a bit of fun.
Gore fans will enjoy it more than most. ...

DVD Description
NIGHT WATCH is an old-fashioned good vs. evil parable that relies on some thoroughly modern special effects to ensnare its audience. Set in present-day Moscow, the movie begins with a quick skip back through the centuries to inform us how a delicate truce was struck between the forces of Light and Dark. These forces still exist in Moscow, with both sides keeping a close eye on each other as they attempt to disguise themselves from the earth's mere mortals. NIGHT WATCH's central character is Anton Gorodetsky (Konstantin Khabensky), who is defined as an 'Other' by the legions of Light and Dark. Anton and his cohorts live as vampires, and await the arrival of a virgin who will announce the resumption of hostilities between the forces of Light and Dark; as the film progresses, it becomes apparent that an epic battle is just around the corner. One of the biggest films of all time in its native Russia, director Timur Bekmambetov’s NIGHT WATCH positions itself somewhere in between THE MATRIX and BLADE in the pantheon of CGI-fueled sci-fi flicks. Although the plot is mind-boggling and occasionally verges on the incomprehensible, Bekmambetov is presumably using this first part of the trilogy to lure viewers into his wild cinematic world. Impressively, Bekmambetov's film was shot on a tiny budget, but it belies its meager origins. Even the English subtitles are integrated into several scenes, with words zipping across the screen and melting into the action as a heavy-metal soundtrack thumps away. Knowing he is set to film two sequels, Bekmambetov leaves his audience hanging as NIGHT WATCH nears its climax, with his second installment (DAY WATCH) promising further FX-laden feuding and--in an intriguing twist--an English-language climax to the trilogy with DUSK WATCH.
