Night of the Living Dead is the daddy of all zombie movies. Yes there may have been films that featured zombies before this but none came close to creating the same world that George A. Romero managed to. A film that manages to truly define the genre and has been imitated ever since.

Now for many years you've probably seen countless releases of NOTLD on every format. And apart from the Elite LD and DVD release, many of them have been sub-par being sourced from old video masters and sometimes even missing footage (for example the DVD release by Contender). So thankfully Optimum has decided that this classic film is worthy of a proper blu-ray edition.

For a low budget, black and white film from the Sixties, this transfer is fantastic. It's very similar to the old Elite DVD but with more detail and better contrast. There is a lot more grain evident but that's to be expected. In fact I'm grateful for the fact they didn't try to digitally remove any film grain because this has delivered a pin sharp picture. There is also a lack of damage or scratches as well, a nice clean print. Sound is also fine; no crackling, humming or analogue noise to be found. Granted there isn't a lot of sound direction, or a full score really, but what is there sounds great with a choice of DTS HD Master Audio or Dolby Digital in 2.0.

The only real extra is George A. Romero Documentary - One for the Fire which is a full length documentary which reunites the actors of Johnny and Barbara and has plenty of anecdotes and tales from them and the director himself. It's an interesting watch, a bit dry at times, but a nice addition to the disc. Shame about the lack of anything else, especially a commentary track.

You can normally find the disc quite cheap, especially compared to other blu-ray releases, so I'd definitely recommend it. A fine representation of a true classic
