NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
FILM ONLY REVIEW
Night of the Museum is a 2006 film that was adapted from the 1993 children's book by Milan Trenc of the same name. When I saw the line up Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson and even old timers Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney, I just knew that this was a film I wanted to watch.
Night at the Museum opens with sad sack Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) about to need to relocate. Larry is a divorced father trying to settle down and find his place in society. He has been drifting for years, much to the concern of his now ex-wife, Erica, and disappointed son, Nick.
Larry has managed to get a job at the Museum of Natural History, where he will become the new night guard. Cecil, Gus and Reginald (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs) are the three aging and eccentric guards who are being downsized in favour of young Larry. What Larry doesn't know is that these
three men have been holding down a considerably more complicated stronghold than anyone could have imagined after the sun goes down on the museum.
Larry is about to find out that being a night guard is less about peace and quiet and more about war and peace. Have you ever been to a museum and, from the corner of your eye, you have thought that you saw an exhibit twitch? Larry is about to see a little more than a twitch!
Larry soon discovers that as soon the sun goes down, all the exhibits in the museum magically come to life. He is caught between a battle between miniature cowboys and Roman Centurians, a rampaging Attila the Hun and a dinasaur on the loose (to say nothing of the lions, monkeys and Neanderthals), Larry turns to Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) for help. Will Larry be able to contain this chaos, win the respect of his son and impress his pretty colleague (Carla Gugino)

I thought that 'Night at the Museum' was a fabulously fun film. It is a film not to be taken seriously. Granted the storyline is a bit corny, and much of the Ben Stiller humour is Ben Stiller humour, but it's still a very entertaining film, and the special effects are fantastic.
The storyline is simple; a man gets an unexpected challenge, which no one would ever believe, a new job that he keeps so as not to disappoint his son.
Larry loves his son, has a decent relationship with his ex-wife, is freaked out by his new job and wonders if he has what it takes to step up to the mark when the time comes. Stiller plays this role with charm and wit. His exchanges with the various and diverse characters in the museum are hilarious, as he desperately tries to get through each night.
And what a host of various and diverse characters we meet! Owen Wilson (in an uncredited role) and Steve Coogan are just wonderful as the Roman Octavius and a gunslinging cowboy; the two actors make their scenes snap with humour from the strength of their personalities rather than the jokes; I know that I will never look at a miniature exhibits in quite the same way again. Robin Williams steps in as well, as does Ricky Gervais as Larry's boss; he is incredible as he puts his unique twist on the uptight idiot running the museum.
The setting of this film is wonderful; it actually feels as if you are in a museum. It is filled with the inherent anonymity of any museum, with its lifelike scenes and glances into the past. On top of this though, there is a touch of magic from the moment Larry enters the building.
I thought the three 'oldies' were wonderful, Van Dyke (who at age 81 is wonderfully active- stay through the credits to see), Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs did an incredible job, Rooney is hilarious as he itches for a fight with Larry
The main thing that makes Night at the Museum such enormously great fun is obviously the visual effects. The communication of Larry with the characters is extremely well done. It must be incredibly hard to pull off a sight joke when you can't actually see the creature/person that you are supposedly reacting with, yet Stiller does so time and again with great comic timing.
The one main good point in my opinion about this film is that it is the perfect film for every member of your family. It is a film that everyone can watch together. It's not too adult, not too babyish, not too scary, not too lame, not too loud, not to boyish, not too girly, plenty of action, but nothing violent, no baby characters, but not all adult characters - the ultimate family film.
Summary: Overall I thought this was a brilliant film for the kids and family.
