I saw Night at the Museum when it was first released on DVD and along with the rest of my family really, really enjoyed it. It was something new and different and a real pleasure to watch. So when my brother got the DVD for Christmas we were all quite happy to sit down and watch it again and I must say that the film was just as enjoyable the second time around.
Night at the Museum was released in 2006 and directed by Shawn Levy. It stars Ben Stiller in the lead role as Larry Daley. Larry lives in New York and spends his time bouncing on and off the unemployment list. His son Nick is rather disappointed off him and Larry fears that he may loose him. His fear leads him to take a job as a night guard at the Museum of Natural History, taking over from three old security guards. Settling down for is first night on the job Larry puts up his feet and heads to the land of nod. What he could never imagine however is that when he woke up the dinosaur skeleton would be missing. Although missing problem isn't the right word… alive should just about do it.
Larry quickly realises that everything in the museum comes to life at night and that his job is not merely to watch over the exhibits within the museum but also to keep them in order and stop them killing each other or more importantly stop them killing him, night after night. When the old security guards return though, things get even worse as Larry must do everything within his power to not only protect his son, who is at work with him that night, but also to return the mysterious tablet that makes the museum come alive.
This film really is a fun loving romp through history that lets the imaginations of the viewers really run wild. The plotline itself may sound a little cheesy and possibly a little samey but that really doesn't matter because within this storyline are so many other small ones that make the film such a joy to watch from the moment it begins.
Stiller is very well cast as Larry and brings a great deal of energy to the film, as a whole. His pessimistic attitude at the beginning is slowly replaced by a good dollop of optimism that allows him to shine a light, or more frequently a flashlight, on any situation. Dick Van Dyke as the old security guard Cecil also seems to have been given just the right part and puts in a good performance throughout the films duration.
I must say however that it is the museum displays and exhibitions that really steal the show. The dinosaur Skelton moves with a sense of realism, although who really knows what the things moved like. The roman soldiers and Wild West cowboys are also given a burst of life that brings the film alive. Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt is however my favourite 'exhibition', as you just know that when this statue comes to life that no matter how difficult the situation is everything will be all right.
I think the most important thing about the film though is that it isn't just a simple story about a living museum but that within this seemingly simple idea there are some real gems and the lessons that are portrayed through the learning process that Larry undertakes shine through successfully without taking over the story.
"Teddy Roosevelt: I'm made of wax, Larry. What are you made of?"
In many ways this film really is the perfect family film. It has energy and bounce and better still is just wonderful for the whole family to settle down, cuddle up and watch together.
